December 2, 2018 ST. ROSE OF LIMA PARISH Page 3 THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God s justice is something other than this, of course. God s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah s time. Israel s kings held the promise of God s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. JO Happy New Year, liturgically speaking, as the season of Advent begins today! The next four weeks before Christmas are reserved for our prayerful anticipation and preparation for the Coming of Christ at Bethlehem, into our daily lives, and at the end of time. While we sing the words of today s Psalm response: To you, O Lord, I lift my soul how will we ensure that our hearts and homes are spiritually ready to accept the ultimate Gift of Christ? We make prayer shawls, lap blankets, and baby blankets that are distributed to the Veterans Hospital, Respect Life or sick parishioners needing comfort. These items are blessed by our priest. Be sure to bring in toys for all ages...don t forget the older kids! There will be boxes outside all classrooms and in the church until December 18. Thank you for your generosity! St. Rose Council of Catholic Women annual Christmas gift tree is up in the Bell Tower. Your generosity provides gifts for the Jesu Senior Center and Villa Maria Nursing Home. The tree will be up through Sunday, December 16th. Your care for these elderly is greatly appreciated. The Filipino-American Community of St. Rose of Lima Parish, together with the Filipino Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Miami, celebrate the finale night of the 2018 Simbang Gabi (Advent Novena of Masses) on December 23, 2018 at 7:00 PM here at St. Rose of Lima Church. Main celebrant for this mass is His Excellency, Archbishop Thomas Wenski. Concelebrating with him are Fr. George Packuvettithara, our Pastor and Fr. Manuel Puga, our Parochial Vicar.
