From Pastor Dawn s Desk... Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. ~ Colossians 4:5-6 NRSV I ve been giving the matter of effective communication a great deal of thought lately. Perhaps this is because there seems to be an increased amount of information that I want to communicate with others. It may also be that I ve been receiving more information from others. Some of this information involves asking and answering questions. Usually, though, I am finding myself seeking more effective or creative ways to communicate. One of the things I ve come to realize is that with all of the different means we now have for communicating, most of us are being bombarded with more information than our brains can handle. Just because you are able to receive the same message on the same day by email, telephone, text message and Facebook doesn t mean you should. Most of the so-called experts will say that we need to communicate something 5-7 different ways in order for people to remember the message. While this might be true in certain cases, I m beginning to wonder if it is as true now as it once was. It seems to me that when a piece of information comes at us in too many different ways or too often, we begin to either ignore or forget what is being said. With all of the noise or chatter that we encounter with the internet, social media, television, radio and in print, we tend to lose track of what is being said and the message becomes lost. This seems to be especially true when we decide the message is too long. Take, for instance the following sentence: The Few, the Proud, the. Most of us know how to finish this sentence without giving it much thought. We know that this sentence ends with, The Marines because it is probably a part of our long-term memory. This is mainly because the whole message contains only six words. It s easy to remember and it doesn t take long to for us to say. In a world where many of us are on information overload it might be a good time for us to evaluate and maybe even simplify the ways we communicate. Consider all of the messages you receive from your church. If you or your family is involved in any kind of ministry, whether it s ushering or confirmation, you can probably find out about this in the church newsletter or bulletin. You might also find it on the church website or Facebook page. In addition, someone might send you an email to remind you or you ll get a phone call. So far, this is six ways of communicating a message such as, Please remember to turn in your registration form and money for the retreat. Remarkably, even though it s been communicated at least six different ways, many people still have not received or remembered the message. Which leads me to wonder what exactly went wrong? While I m no communications expert, I do wonder if, in an effort to communicate effectively, we ve actually over communicated to the point where people have stopped paying attention. I honestly don t have a perfect answer to this communication dilemma. Other than simplifying the message, I m not sure if there is a perfect way to tell people what I want them to know and remember. This, I then realize, might actually be the problem some messages are just about what I want others to know and remember. They might not be messages others actually care to know or remember. This is where you can help. As your church seeks better and more effective ways for getting essential information out to you, please do what you can to also take ownership of this information. You may not think the message you receive is very important at the moment, but please do what you can to still retain this information for the future. Please also remember that the information you receive from church is part of our greater mission as a congregation to seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people. While it might seem like a small thing that you are scheduled to run power point on a Saturday evening in November or the church wants your help serving a Wednesday night meals, these things do matter for the sake of the Gospel and for sharing Christ s saving love with the world. 4 See you in church! ~Pastor Dawn 5

Mission Support Jesus said, Go and make disciples of all nations ~Matthew 28:16 Our Mission Support offerings go where we cannot travel. Our ELCA has 305 mission personnel serving in 45 countries! 120 new congregations are under development in the United States. Your gifts to Christ Lutheran designated Mission Support will help this work! Designated envelopes are available in the church narthex or use your own. It s time to renew, or even begin, your subscription to Living Lutheran magazine for 2017. Many of you have chosen to receive this in your home. If you purchase your subscription through Christ Lutheran you are able to receive this for only $8.95 per year. Please send a check to the office with Living Lutheran in the memo. Give To The Max! Thursday, November 17 th is Give to the Max Day in Minnesota. This is an annual event encouraging support of non-profits (yes, including Christ Lutheran!) Gifts given that day through www.givemn.org not only benefit the organization, but also are eligible for Golden Ticket incentives. Every hour one donation will be randomly chosen to receive an additional $1,000 to the donor s charity. Donations may be scheduled starting November 1 st, and one donation given November 1 to November 16 will be drawn for a Super-Sized Golden Ticket of $10,000. A second $10,000 prize will be selected from those donations made on November 17 th. Of course you don t need a special day to Give to the max! God blesses you every day, and your donations to the work of the church reflect your grateful response to God s gifts. As the year draws towards its close, your faithful donations are needed to pay for our ministry expenses, but also to share in the ministry of the larger Church throughout the world. In addition to placing your offering in the offering plate at church, you can give electronically at any time at www.givemn.org, then searching for Christ Lutheran Church, Slayton, MN. Remember that our congregation is also able to receive donations of farm commodities, stocks, or IRA distributions. 10 11

A Happy Camper!! The Endowment Fund provided $200 per student camperships for those attending week long camp at Shetek Lutheran Ministries. Dear Endowment Committee, Thank you for your generous contribution towards my registration for camp at Shetek Lutheran Ministries. I had a great week at camp and I sincerely appreciate your generosity! Thanks again!! ~Carli M Consider a gift to CLC Endowment fund for other happy campers. Dear Members of Christ Lutheran Church, Thank you for your support of my college education through the ELCA Scholarship Fund. I m looking forward to another good year! ~Rebekah N Plan Ahead Christmas Schedule Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday this year. Even though we don t normally have a service on Christmas Day, we have decided that we will have our normal schedule on Sunday, December 25 th Christmas Day. It will be a different service than what we will be doing Christmas Eve, so you are invited to come both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, or whichever of our services works best with your family s schedule. Bring your Christmas company with you, and worship together as a family! Here is our schedule: Christmas Eve (Saturday, December 24) 4:00 PM Carol Service with Holy Communion at Faith, Avoca 5:15 PM Candlelight Carol Service with Holy Communion at Christ 9:00 PM Candlelight Carol Service with Holy Communion at Christ Christmas Morning (Sunday, December 25) 8:45 AM Lessons and Carols service at Faith, Avoca 10:15 AM Lessons and Carols service at Christ, Slayton Pew For Sale When the sound board was moved to the main level of the sanctuary, a pew had to be removed to make room for it. It has been sitting temporarily in the Chapel Lounge, but the Council has decided to make it available to anyone who would have use for it. It is a light-oak pew, about 13 foot, 5 inches long. Obviously it is too long for anyone s home as it is, but a good craftsman could cut it down to make at least one entry bench for one s home. If you have use for it, please call the church office to make an offer for it. 15

Thank You! Addresses Needed We want to keep in touch with our young adults. If you have someone in your family who is in college or serving on the military, please share their current address with the church office. We want to send them cards and other fun mail while they are away. On behalf of the students, parents, teachers and mission workers in Bangladesh, we would like to thank the Christ Lutheran Church faith community for again organizing and hosting a 'Lunch for Bangladesh Literacy' on October 9, 2016. It is difficult to put into words the importance of the encouraging words, prayer and financial support that has been provided as we work together to improve access to education in Bangladesh. We extend the thank you to the Christ Lutheran Mission Outreach Committee, the volunteers who prepared and served the meal and the people who attended and made donations. We also acknowledge the participation by Faith Lutheran Church members (especially Faith's WELCA), others in the community and special thanks for the support provided by the Thrivent Financial Action Team program. The effort raised over $1,350 to help sponsor children in Chakla Village (northwest Bangladesh) to attend school. These children have no other avenue of support to help them achieve their educational goals. The funding will help support basic literacy classes in the Village as well as cover the expenses of sending 9 Chakla Village children to the Livingstone School Bangladesh (now serving over 200 children). Thank you, Steve and Nancy Laible, Co-directors Bangladesh School Project 24 November is that time of year when we give thanks for everything for which we are grateful. Everyone at Christ Lutheran should be especially thankful to all those special people in our congregation who donate their time and talents to serving our church. This includes: *Weekly Worship Assistants Acolytes, Lectors, Greeters, Communion Assistants, Ushers, Altar Guild, Bread Bakers, those who run the sound system and the power point, those who record the worship service, burn it to a DVD and deliver it to the City Hall, *Those who serve on Church Council and the variety of committees, *The Organists, Pianists, members and directors of the Church Choir, help with Sunday School and Saturday Worship music, and those who provide us with special music, *Those who work on our bulletin boards, and do seasonal decorating throughout the church, *Those who deliver Meals-On-Wheels, do snow removal, and upkeep our landscaping, *Those who teach Sunday School, VBS, the Adult Class, Confirmation and lead Bible Studies, *Those who serve and work for funerals, Wednesday evening meals and other church events, *Those who make prayer shawls, faith chests, and help quilt, *And all those we may have unintentionally forgotten. Each person doing their small part, helps to make Christ Lutheran Church what it is today. Thank You! 25
