Christ Lutheran News October, 2017 THE SERENITY PRAYER Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen. We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

From Pastor Dawn s Desk... 4 For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, ~ Romans 3:22b-24 October 31, 2017 marks a significant milestone in the life of the whole Christian church. It was on this day, 500 years ago, that Martin Luther, a Roman Catholic monk, nailed to a church door a list of 95 points for discussion, also known as theses, regarding some of the practices of the church. Luther had a few questions and concerns for the church, particularly regarding the selling indulgences. His convictions were grounded in God s Word as it conveys God s grace and promises to a world where indeed all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The more Luther studied scripture, particularly Paul s letter to The Romans, the more he was convinced that the church he knew and loved was in need of reform. This reformation began 500 years ago this month. In Lutheran churches around the world, celebrations are being planned as well as other events commemorating this anniversary. In some places, joint worship services are being planned with our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters with a focus on reconciliation. Others are planning special hymn sings or musical events. In our congregations, we will gather as we do every year for worship on October 29 and hear God s Word proclaimed through song, prayer and preaching. We will adorn the sanctuary with the color red and will no doubt sing, A Mighty Fortress is Our God at some point during the service. It s quite possible that in the next month, you will hear the same question I ve been hearing for a while, What is your church doing this year for the Reformation? My response to this question is often that we will continue to do what we do as God s church and we will do it well. We will mark this special day during worship, but in some ways, much of what we do on Reformation Sunday 2017 won t seem all that different than what we do on other weekends. In the months and years to come, the best and most lasting way we can continue to commemorate the Reformation is in fact to do what it is we are called to do and be as God s church in the world and do it well. We gather regularly for worship to hear God s Word and receive the sacraments. We look for ways that we might live out our baptismal promises as Christ s light shines through us. We hope for a world where indeed, as Paul writes, there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We share God s redeeming love with the entire world, knowing that God will continue to hold and sustain us now and forever. Amen. I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God s hands, that I still possess. ~Martin Luther 5

Women s Bible Study October Session 2: I believe in Jesus Christ In Scripture, Jesus is called the Messiah, the Son of God, a teacher, a healer, the pioneer of our faith, the rock of our salvation, Son of Man and other titles. In the Apostles Creed, Jesus life and ministry is briefly summed up. Jesus is described as God s only Son and our Lord one who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born by the Virgin, who suffered under Pilate, who was crucified, died and was buried. The creed is a definition of the work of the Father, Son and Spirit, yet there is also fullness to being followers in the Way of Christ that is not described in the creed. How does the creed encompass faithful living in imitation of Christ? In other words, what does it mean to believe even more about Jesus and following Jesus than we say in the words of the creed? 19

Parish Nurse Ministry Prayer Concerns 20 The Road to Resilience Are you a resilient person, someone who has the ability to bounce back after something negative or difficult in your life? I m reading a book called WE by Anderson and Nadel and the chapter I m on is entitled Courage. I think that goes along with resilience. The book suggests that one thing we can do to become stronger and more resilient is to write an affirmation statement about ourselves something short, positive, in the present tense, and includes statements of fact about ourselves. Here are some examples. I exist. I am loved. I am resilient and strong. I am okay just the way I am. I am enough. Write your affirmation where you can see it easily and often. Repeat it when you start to feel stressed, or when things are not going well. Use it as a shield to protect yourself throughout the day. And remember in light and in darkness, we can trust in God s caring presence. Out of the Darkness Suicide Walk The 3rd Annual Currie Out of Darkness Suicide Walk is scheduled at the Currie End O Line Park on Saturday, Oct. 7 with registration starting at 9 and a short program at 10 AM with the walk following. There will also be a picnic lunch and silent auction. You can go online and check out more information. (Currie MN Out of Darkness Suicide Walk). It s for anyone whose life has been touched by suicide (that s all of us in one way or another) and to bring hope. Donations accepted to help suicide prevention programs. Thank you to the people of Christ Lutheran for the wonderful farewell reception that you hosted for us on Sunday, September 17th! The food was great--thank you to the women who planned the meal and served it! It was a special opportunity to say goodbye to many of you who have been so kind to Marcia and I during our eleven-plus years in Slayton. Thank you to Pastor Dawn for "MC'ing" the event, including tracking down some photos and interviews for a Power Point. She also worked with Dawn Mouw, Amy Nepp, Whendy Gass, and Mary Everson to prepare a scrapbook of memories from our time in Slayton. A special thank-you to the congregation for the generous $250 gift card, and to Luke Schneider for his kind words as Congregational President. We appreciated receiving the "Christ Lutheran" bowl from the Christ Lutheran Church Women, and Irene's greetings on their behalf. We were also blessed to receive "his and hers" prayer shawls from the Yarn & Yak group, a beautiful quilt from the Sewing Circle, and many cards and greetings. Finally, thank you to the Sunday School children (and staff) for the garden flags you surprised me with at Children's Sermon time! Your names and thumb prints will help me to think of you every time I go to my garden. I have appreciated your friendship and support as we have served Christ (our Lord, and our congregation) together. I will be serving as Interim Pastor at First Lutheran in Saint Peter, MN helping them in their time of transition as they consider their ministry goals and what staffing might best help them reach those goals. I know that you will be well-served by Pastor Dawn Quame, and whatever Interim Pastor may come to take my place. Please support them with your prayers and with your active support of the mission of Christ Lutheran. In Christ's love, Pastor Ted Kunze Communion Services Rescheduled Holy Communion and Devotions will be offered on Tuesday, October 17 at Sunrise Apartments at 9:00 am and Lindenwood Assisted Living at 10:15 am.
