October 11, 2015 Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page 3-565 A Message from the Padre Our Gospel this weekend gives us the famous proverb: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God. These words are essential for understanding where Jesus stands with regard to wealth. It emphasizes the impossibility of entering into heaven for one who is so attached to his possessions. Some have argued that this proverb is not to be taken literally. But I believe that Jesus meant exactly every word He said. I also believe that Jesus is not condemning wealth, but he is condemning those people who are attached to material goods. For someone whose priority in life is just wealth their material possessions can easily take over the place of God. My dear friends, many have been led astray by the illusion that happiness and fulfillment largely come from wealth. Some people think that wealth is a consequence of God s blessing. If one is rich, they must surely be blessed by God. But we must never assess our blessings on the basis of worldly material goods. The greatest blessing we have in our life is that we have God on our side who can make everything possible. As the Gospel tells, It is impossible for men but for God all things are possible. The lesson that we can learn from Mark s Gospel this weekend is that: Our choices in life are not only between good and evil, but also between what is good and what is best for us. A house, a family, wealth and a job: these are all good; they are absolutely wonderful; but there is more than all of this.and that is God s promise of Eternal Life. Remember the young man in our Gospel today, he had to renounce his worldly possessions in order for him to have eternal life. Yes, in the very core of our being, all of us no matter how well off or rich we are, long for eternal life. As we move to another weekend, may we open our eyes with what is important and essential and not be blinded with material wealth. Hopefully one day we can pass through the eye of the needle and attain that promise of God s heavenly treasures and eternal life. Fr. October 11, 2015 The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4-565 The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 10: 17-30 The Jesus we have encountered throughout the year in Mark s Gospel is very real, down-to-earth. Today his conversation with the young man who goes away sad at the prospect of giving away his many possessions leads him to a reflection on how difficult it is to enter God s kingdom when one s heart is taken up with other kinds of possessions. As we listen today to God s word, what in our lives keeps us from entering God s kingdom? How might God help us?
