FROM THE MINISTER... The Food Fair last weekend was such a wonderful event! The atmosphere was fantastic so much friendly conversation and appreciation of the range of foods that had been prepared and was being served; as well as the cheerful volunteers at a variety of stalls with all of the goods so cleverly made; and the superb music provided the band which had some people in the car-park enjoying the music directly, and many more enjoying it as they moved around the church. There is a huge amount of work behind running this kind of function, but it is delightful to see how it comes together in such a wonderful, memorable event! This is a rich season for events and concerts, some of which we ve enjoyed in the last month, with more to come as we get closer to Christmas. Not everyone can get to all of these events. Indeed, there are quite a few people, including very faithful members of the church, who find themselves unable to make it to church on Sunday mornings for reasons and health and mobility. Brenda and Marlene are working on a new prayer list for High Street Times which invites us to keep them in prayer with us all. Please contact Brenda, Marlene or the office if you would like to be included. Our Bible readings at the moment have been coming from the Hebrew prophets, during times of international political threats, uncertainties, possibilities and risks. While parallels to our current time might not be exact, the prophets speak very much to our time, to warn us of what is eternal (and what is not); to remind us that we are held in the love of God (and that our salvation is not ultimately in politics); and to invite us live into God s way: to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8). It is exactly the same as growing into maturity in Christ, as we read in the New Testament. To do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God fits rather well with our vision statement of Strengthening Community through the Holy Spirit; Embracing All People with Christ s compassion; Connecting Younger Generations in God s love. Micah s call thus works well not only at the level of our own individual discipleship journeys, but also in terms of how we live as church in our community, both in the everyday and in our great celebrations. Be sure to invite friends and neighbours to share in our Christmas celebrations, rejoicing in God s love for us in the gift of Jesus birth. God s blessings and peace be with you, David 4

Embrace life in all its complexities, appreciate all manner of emotions, look to yesterday in observance of where you stand today. Allow today to be the compass to guide your life toward a constructive tomorrow. Be grateful of the opportunities good, bad or indifferent that have led, and are leading you toward that that you desire most. Be kind, kind to yourself and kind to others Share what you have learnt and be open to accepting new perspectives from others with similar or perhaps foreign, but always mindful and constructive intents. Learn, teach, observe and reflect; find the time, for if indeed you don t, be sure that the time will find you. Be present, be prepared; be ready. Appreciate that within patience you will never be left waiting. Understand you are as important as the important people that intertwine within your journey. Grow in the knowledge that your own importance has too been interwoven into the lives and journeys of others also May your imprint be as everlasting and perpetual in breath, belief and wonder. In life there are misfortunes, triumphs, and moments of doubt; inclusive of indescribable times of joy and elation. There are times of loss, grief and unfair realities. From all, lessons are to be learnt, valued and passed down to those we love dearly. Validation and appreciation is garnered in offering these gifts to a stranger in the street in need of comfort, to friends, to family, and also to those in opposition of ourselves and values. Finding value in the journey of self and of others is a testament of mindful all-inclusive intent. To bear witness to all expressions, motivations and irritations binds the human condition. This is the circle of life; diversity found among the brothers and sisters of the world are the reasons to sustain a mindful, faith-filled, compassionate and inclusive life for all drawn to its remarkable enchantments. Belief in human kindness is the key, just breathe and you will unlock its endless possibilities. Always remember to breathe and believe. Understand this legacy and as sure as the sun rises and sets know that an end surely becomes yet another glorious and bountiful beginning. This is my truth. By Russell Hawkins. 7
Dear Friends You may have travelled to India with us, you may have wanted to travel to India with us, you may have read about what we do when we go to India, or you may have helped fundraise with us in a variety of ways. Either way, you are all in some way aware of the situation for women and children in The Punjab area of India, and in particular more familiar with our projects area around Amritsar. Dr Alma Ram and her team are still on the frontline everyday educating, supporting, advocating for and honouring the lives of these women and children. As some of you may already know, one of the ways the women have been proactive in raising their own funds has been by knitting and sewing goods which we have then brought back to sell. We pay for equipment and raw materials 50Rps and each knitter is paid 100Rps per item ($2) once delivered back to Dr Alma Ram, an Indian midwife and community worker, who runs the JBKS. The remainder of the profit ($2.50) goes into additional program costs. Currently we have a stock of knitted socks and sewn cloth drawstrings bags of varying sizes (pictured) We also have a supply of knitted cotton dishcloths made by supporters here in Victoria. Plus gift cards and books. All of the proceeds acquired from the sale of these goods is returned to the project to fund ongoing needs. This week Dr Alma has engaged the assistance of Ghazala Khan a consultant from Delhi to train a few handpicked ladies in product development and attention to quality. Ghazala already has a similar project in the southern Punjab with products being sold in the USA. This training was made possible by the fundraising efforts of Adele Mapperson and her friends, one of our past travellers to Amritsar. Many thanks Adele. We are hoping that some of you may join us in our humble attempts to continue supporting JBK and Dr Alma to continue their much needed work, by buying and/or selling some of their products, or making a donation: We are proposing that only twice a year: 1. Pre-Mother s Day 2. Pre-Christmas...that we as Friends of JBK make a concerted effort to sell their goods around the world. ALSO Please promote the website at www.womanandchildhealth.org to your contacts via e-mail, Facebook (any other social media or marketing method). The website outlines the work of the project and also has a Shop page and a secure Donate page if people want to buy gifts or support the project directly. A thank you card will be issued for donations. The Cracked Pot This story was read at a recent Elders meeting as part of our devotions. It contains some beautiful wisdom from India A waterbearer in India had two large pots, one hung on each end of a pole, which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it. While the other pot was perfect, and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the mistress's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to her master's house. The perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream: "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you." Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?" "I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your mistress's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said. The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in her compassion she said, "As we return to the mistress's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because 11 it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure. The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my mistress's table. Without you being just the way you are, she would not have this beauty to grace her house." We want to thank each and every one who supported the food fair, whether it was to volunteer, donate time and goods, or to buy food, cake and goodies on the day. It was a great opportunity to showcase our church to the wider community, and to generate funds for our community outreach projects. People from across both congregations worked side by side and got to know each other better. There was an electric buzz on the night and many people commented and gave positive feedback.
