Mission Possible Stewardship Campaign 2017-2020 Ascension Lutheran Church, School & Foundation

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, We are a church with an amazing history. We have risen to challenge after challenge, all for the sake of the mission of creating opportunities for all people to become devoted followers of Christ. After nearly 70 years of doing this, we have come to realize, this is who we are. We are the ones who, with God s help, rise to the challenge day after day, year after year and season after season. And when we do, we discover just how faithful our God truly is. In this season, as we embark on our Mission Possible Our Vision, Our Future, God s Glory campaign, we are moving forward on our vision for ministry by funding strategic facilities improvements, building a permanent Early Childhood Center, and continuing to reduce our mortgage debt. This is kingdom-building work. Our campaign challenges us to be a part of something extraordinary and provides an opportunity for genuinely generous giving for something greater than any one of us. The call for each of us is to give sacrificially over and above our regular offering for the next three years. We all have a significant part to play in the Lord s work in and through Ascension. And future generations will thank us for meeting today s challenge. This isn t about money, it s about mission. It is about the overwhelming joy of knowing that we are part of something lasting that can transform the world and us! The timing is perfect. We, the members of the Ascension family, are ready for the challenge of this new day and God, like always, will be faithful. So honored to be in mission with you, Rev. Tim Delkeskamp, Senior Pastor Rev. Steve Herder, Associate Pastor

Dear Family and Friends of Ascension Church, School, and Foundation, On behalf of the Mission Possible campaign team, we ask you to join us in imagining the numerous possibilities that exist here at Ascension. Picture the many ways our faith grows and how our generous gifts of service and witness help grow the faith of others. Whether in worship or in the classroom, opportunities are created daily for all to become devoted followers of Christ. It is the potential for furthering this mission that has led our One Ascension community into a campaign that will make our campus more inviting, help our community grow, and enable us to serve our Lord well into the future. The primary purposes of the Mission Possible Our Vision, Our Future, God s Glory campaign are to grow our faith in God and, in turn, the faith of others through the continued and enhanced mission and ministry we share. The monetary purpose of our campaign is to help revitalize our sanctuary, build a permanent Early Childhood Center, and enhance and expand our worship facility. Applying campaign gifts to this effort enables us to continue to reduce the debt incurred when we purchased the land that we now hope to build upon by utilizing funds from our annual budget. Giving generously will ensure that we achieve our vision, but our generous giving is about so much more. As we grow together in faith, this campaign presents an opportunity for us, and our community, to re-commit ourselves to placing God first in our lives. I encourage you to see this joyous giving opportunity with fresh eyes, and prayerfully consider a financial commitment that celebrates the abundant blessings God provides to you each day. Join me in investing deeply in the future of our church and school. Together, we can achieve our mission and many other amazing things in God s name. In Christ, Todd Klipp, Campaign Chair

For nearly 70 years, Ascension has been a place where all can interact with the message of God s love through scripture and spiritual development, grow as Christ s disciples, and celebrate in fellowship and service. Ascension is a cross-generational community of believers where all of God s children, from birth to the end of life s journey, are valued and called to be partners in ministry. Our vision compels us to be a place where children, youth, and adults are equipped to do ministry and to be God s caring presence, both here in this community, and in the world community of which we are a part. That vision is guiding us to develop a campus where all generations are present and interacting daily, in a way that allows faith in Christ to be passed on from generation to generation. The people of Ascension are a family of God s people, chosen by the grace and mercy of God for our faith walk. We have a mandate set forth for us in the Great Commission - to fully equip ourselves to be A Caring People and to proclaim God s love, justice and forgiveness through effective witness and service. Our Mission Possible Mission Possible campaign invites us to imagine how we can best provide for ministry and service now and in the years to come. Our church family is healthy and eager for ministry; however, we need to grow and renovate our facilities in order to honor our commitment to serve one another and our community.

In the spring of 1948, a group of Conejo Valley Lutherans gathered together and asked themselves, Will we build a church? Under the leadership of Pastor Original building of the Ascension Lutheran Church Walter Gravrock (father of our recent interim Sr. Pastor, Paul Gravrock) and with Thousand Oaks - Feb. 4 th, 1949 35 in attendance, the first worship service of Ascension Lutheran Church was held on July 4 th, 1948 in a Quonset hut on Chiquita Lane. The answer was clearly Yes! And they began to dream. The group then met for a few months in a storefront on Thousand Oaks Blvd. Times were tough, funds were low, thoughts of disbanding were considered, but the small band of stalwarts decided that if there was a will (God s will), there was a way. Later on that year, a staunch supporter of the church negotiated and provided the majority of the funding for a piece of property and an Army barracks on which to build a new church. According to notes found from charter member, John K. Beyer, the church continued to struggle, even after a new pastor, Rev. Ommund Nielsen, was brought on board to lead Sunday services. John felt that some congregants stopped attending because of the financial support needed to maintain the property and the fact that the facility itself was unattractive and sparse; not like the other, established churches nearby. However - there was one encouraging, bright spot in this struggling congregation: the Sunday school. It was the driving, guiding force that carried the church through dark days and kept the church going. John s wife, Myrtle Beyer, led the Sunday school and grew its attendance to 65 children in 6 months! Then the children brought their parents to church. And, according to John, when we looked at the children that God was sending to us for instruction in His word, we knew we had to go forward - FOR THEM. And so it is in 2017. There are children and families looking for a safe place to learn and grow and a harbor of kindness, ethics, faith, spiritual guidance and grace. We are now faced with the same question Ascension forefathers and foremothers pondered nearly 70 years ago: WILL WE BUILD A CHURCH? And our response is a resounding YES!

In order to continue our calling as God s people to truly live our mission of being called to create opportunities for all people to become devoted followers of Christ - Ascension seeks to increase and refresh our church and school facilities, and position ourselves for the next chapter in the life of our One Ascension, accelerating our vision for ministry in the following ways: Ministry to Our Community s Children & Youth Through Our Church School Programs Build a new, permanent Early Childhood Center to serve more families Comply with the city of Thousand Oaks timeline to replace existing modular buildings Highlight our focus on the stewardship of God s creation by developing outdoor spaces (teaching garden, fire pit, amphitheater, nature center and outdoor classrooms) for students and church members to learn and experience nature Position our school ministry positively for future development and service to our community Worship Refresh and refurbish our sanctuary with new seating, flooring, altar furniture, upgraded lighting and sound system, and an extended altar platform Expand our vestry and sacristy area Create a music room for our musicians as they prepare for worship Relocate the prayer chapel Install closable shades in Founders Hall Welcome Enlarge our east Narthex to serve as a main entrance Create new restrooms Improve our parking lot and create better accessibility to our facilities Remodel our west narthex Renovate existing restrooms Ministry Expansion and Financial Strength Eliminate our current indebtedness as a church Free up dollars currently going to pay our mortgage and put these dollars into ministry Completing these projects moves us forward in our Master Plan, and will allow Ascension to continue to improve the ways in which we serve one another and our community.

Q: What are the cost projections for our campaign building projects? A: Our cost projections for the various components are as follows: Preliminary Design/Permitting - $215,000 Sanctuary Remodel - $548,000 Grading, Parking, Utilities, Site Work - $1,140,000 Early Childhood Center - $2,389,000 Narthex Expansion, Music, Sacristy and Vestry - $3,058,200 Total: ~$7.3M Q: What about the other components of our Master Plan such as Science and Technology Education spaces and a Gymnasium? A: Our Master Plan encompasses a significant list of projects which we will accomplish over time. The project priorities listed above are a good challenge for us now, and achieving these will make possible the opportunity for us to ultimately complete our Master Plan. One great outcome of raising our new Early Childhood Center is that we plan to retrofit the existing modular buildings for Science education while we continue our efforts to build out the Master Plan. Q: What does the construction timeline look like? A: We are planning for the following timelines: Permitting/Environmental Studies - Fall 2017/Winter 2018 Sanctuary renovation - start May 2018 Begin grading/site work for Early Childhood Center - May 2019 Begin construction of ECC - August 2019 Open ECC - September 2020 Begin Sanctuary expansion - January 2021 Complete Sanctuary expansion - December 2021 Q: Can my gift be designated to a particular project? A: We are not encouraging designated gifts, because we want to focus on the overall ministry objectives of Ascension rather than a single project. However, if a donor feels called to make an inspirational gift toward a particular element of the Master Plan, they are encouraged to speak with the Campaign Chair (Todd Klipp) or one of the pastors.

Worship is the most important thing that any Christian congregation does, and it s what sets us apart. Gathering, teaching, and serving our members, our community, and our world are what many secular organizations do - but worshiping God is our unique and primary purpose. Sacristy/Vestry/ Communion Chapel East Narthex Restrooms Lobby Since 1989, there have been 1,518 baptisms; 799 youth have been confirmed Each year there are 250 regularly-scheduled worship services We hold numerous weddings, funerals, Great Music at Ascension concerts, outside group concerts, ALS programs, meetings, and rehearsals in the sanctuary A host of musicians is involved in leading worship each week for 3 different styles of worship - 5 vocal choirs for people of different ages as well as a hand bell choir, praise band, and country bluegrass band Members serve as ushers, acolytes, readers, communion assistants, and sound and projection technicians The tasks lovingly performed by those mentioned here would be greatly enhanced by the refurbishing of our sanctuary and by the expansion of practice/preparation spaces. You can use this chart to easily calculate the total of a certain gift over a 3-year period. We see how a small amount over a period of time results in a large contribution. PRAY Pray for God to guide you as you consider how to share your financial resources in our Mission Possible campaign over the next three years. Remember that these gifts will help revitalize and expand our facilities for improved ministry. LISTEN Tune your heart to discover how God wants you to give of your time, talents, and financial resources. COMMIT As God guides you, make your commitment to the Mission Possible campaign. The key is how much each of us sacrifices for the mission of Ascension. Everyone s precious gifts are needed! Working together, we will step forward toward further ministry expansion, help ourselves and others come alive to the faith, and discover joy in our serving. CELEBRATE Thank the Lord for the miracles performed in your life, and give thanks for calling you to carry out God s work in this place. On every Lord s Day you should put aside something from what you have earned during the week, and use it for this offering. The amount depends on how much the Lord has helped you earn. LIFE INSURANCE You may consider donating existing life insurance by making Ascension both the owner and the beneficiary of the policy. If the policy is whole (ordinary) life insurance, you will receive an immediate tax deduction for the cash value on your federal income tax, and, if you continue to pay future premiums, can take future deductions. LIFESTYLE GIVING Another way to generate gifts for our campaign is to consider lifestyle adjustments. Postponing the purchase of an automobile or remodeling of a home are two ways to find money in order to make a generous gift. Many of us are experienced at stewardship to the mission and ministry of Ascension. Some families tithe (give 10%), and some exceed the tithe in their giving. Most of us provide from our current resources checking and savings to supply our support of our mission. Often, however, gifts for capital campaigns are contributed in ways other than cash and checkbook. Let's think outside the conventional box and be creative in our giving. GIFTS OF APPRECIATED INVESTMENTS Donations of appreciated long-term stocks, mutual funds, or other investments are an excellent way to make a significant gift. When you donate appreciated investments, you do not pay capital gains tax, and you receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value on the date of the donation. GIFTING FROM AN IRA If you are over the age of 70 ½ you can make a tax-free charitable contribution from your IRA. The contribution must be made directly from your IRA to Ascension Lutheran Church and it may be applied to your Required Minimum Distribution.

RENTAL INCOME FROM REAL PROPERTY Some members may own either a vacation home/condo or a time share property. Consider renting out your property and gifting all or a portion of the rental income. REAL PROPERTY AS A CHARITABLE GIFT There are two main methods for real estate to be given as a charitable gift. The first is an outright gift of the property. This is the simplest, most direct method resulting in the most immediate tax benefit. The second method involves bequests either through one s will, establishment of trusts or annuities. For the latter there are various tax benefits depending upon the specifics of the bequest and upon the individual s life circumstances and desires. HELP WITH YOUR GIFT PLANNING Ascension has people who can assist you if you are considering making gifts using the techniques listed above. For assistance or more information, please contact the church office. Note: Ascension Lutheran cannot give legal advice. You are encouraged to consult your professional advisor before implementing any of the above plans.

Now to God, who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to God be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 1600 E. Hillcrest Dr., Thousand Oaks, CA 91362 Ph: 805.495.0406 ALCTO.org
