Parish Mission Statement Immaculate Conception Catholic Church celebrates the Eucharist and proclaims the gospel in worship through our love of God and for each other and with our ministry to the marginalized. We journey together in our faith, united by our trust in Christ s love and mercy and the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Staff Connection... May 7, 2017 Dear Friends, Immaculate Conception Church I often enjoy reading about our Holy Father, Pope Francis! He is not only a Jesuit (I was educated by Jesuits @ Fordhan and Boston College!) but he is a very holy man that lives a very simplistic life. His holiness and simplicity are such gems I have tried in the years of his Papacy to model my lifestyle after his I pray that God will continue to direct me in that path! In my reading about Pope Francis, I came upon an article about his homily from his first Chrism Mass in the Diocese of Rome. In that homily, he challenged his clergy, the bishops, priests, and deacons of the world to be shepherds with the smell of the sheep. What on earth did he mean by that comment? Well, smelling like sheep requires getting close to them. And in Jesus day, shepherds always got close: they slept at the entrance to the pen to protect the sheep and keep them from wandering off. And we know that the sheep always recognized their shepherd s voice and followed them. And here lies the similarity Jesus got close to the people even the Pharisees that set themselves apart by taking on human flesh. And in doing so, he healed by giving himself to us as He died on the cross. Jesus took the high road not returning insults, not threatening, but simply submitting to those who judged Him so unjustly. Would that we try to imitate this in our own lives! Submission is a word that often carries with it a negative definition. However, submission can also help us find strength in suffering and in doing so we come to recognize the power that permeates our being when we are willing to die to ourselves. When we allow ourselves to be filled with the Holy Spirit only then can we begin to forgive, to speak truth in love, and to live like Jesus who continues to be our Good Shepherd, even now in this time and space. And friends, the clergy are not the only ones called to smell like sheep for all of us are sheep and shepherds called to care for one another in the name of the Lord, When we allow ourselves to get close to one another, the Shepherd s love continues right here in our midst and thanks be to God for that! This week make it your mission to get close to someone you haven t been close to for a while and feel God s love in that for both of you. Easter blessings, Deacon Hurley MASS SCHEDULE Monday & Thursday 12:10PM Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 7AM Vigil Mass Saturday 4:30PM Sunday 8:30 & 10:30AM George Green Parish Center 113 North Geneva Street Ithaca, NY 14850 *** 607/273-6121 SACRAMENTS BAPTISM: A preparation session is required before the baptism of your child. Congratulations Sister Jane This month Sister Jane Kenrick, 1953 graduate of Immaculate Conception School, celebrates her 60th Anniversary as a Sister of Mercy. Anyone wishing to congratulate her, may send a card to her at: 1437 Blossom Rd., Rochester, NY 14610. Nomination Form for Parish Pastoral Council Spiritual leadership is key to vitality of the parish and its ministries. When spiritual leading is lacking in a parish even the best of plans will not come to fruition. This noble leadership role is done best by those who are motivated by the love of Christ and its mission to the world. With this in mind, kindly nominate persons, or yourself who will serve with joy the needs of our parish. Consider gender, age and other existing diversities of the Parish. I nominate to serve a regular three-year term on our Pastoral Council. I nominate to serve a one-year member as a youth member of our Pastoral Council. Please return your nomination by placing it in the collection or delivering it to the Parish Center by Monday, May 15th. PARISH STAFF Fr.
