10:45 Orders of Worship November 8, 2015 (See a separate bulletin for 6:30 & 8:30) Widows are visible everywhere in today s readings. Jesus denounces those scribes who pray impressive prayers but devour widows houses. He commends the poor widow who in his view gave far more than the major donors. Jesus doesn t see her simply as an object of compassion or charity. She, like the widow of Zarephath who shares her last bit of food with Elijah, does something of great importance. WELCOME TO TRINITY! We are glad you are here at one of our FOUR WORSHIP SERVICES this weekend, each centered around the same scriptures but with four different musical styles. THIS BULLETIN contains information for the 6:30 p.m. Saturday night folk service and the 8:30 a.m. traditional service. A SEPARATE BULLETIN lists the two 10:45 a.m. Sunday services, one a festive setting here in the sanctuary and the other a praise worship in Jack s Place, our new fellowship hall. We invite you to turn to pages 9 & 10 in this bulletin for HELPFUL INFORMATION for visitors and members alike, such as restrooms, child care and service participants. WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENT sheets are available at the doors or from a host or usher and are available online at www.trinityashland.org. SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES for all ages are Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. See the hallway information board or a Sunday School host for class listings and locations. SUNDAY MORNING 10:45 PRAISE COMMUNION November 8, 2015-24th Sunday after Pentecost In the Worship Center in Jack s Place MESSAGE - Pastor Jeff Scott A PENNY THAT WAS WORTH A MILLION PRAYER CARDS are in the chair pockets. COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION: Receive the bread from the first communion deacon. Then dip the bread in the first goblet and partake (Intinction) or eat the bread and then drink from the second goblet (Common cup). You are encouraged to respond Amen as the elements are received. If you desire GRAPE JUICE OR GLUTEN-FREE WAFERS, please commune by way of the center aisle and indicate your desire to the communion deacon. IF YOU DESIRE PRIVATE, INDIVIDUAL PRAYER for yourself or on behalf of a loved one, inform a host. You will be paired with a prayer leader following the service for prayer and the laying on of hands. SUNDAY MORNING 10:45 WORSHIP November 8, 2015 24th Sunday after Pentecost In the Sanctuary This BULLETIN contains the worship order and the red Evangelical Lutheran Worship contains liturgical songs in the front and hymns, listed here in bold numbers, in the back. LARGE PRINT BULLETINS of this service are available from the ushers. + + + GATHERING + + + The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. GATHERING MUSIC Chant de Paix (Song of Peace) - Jean Langlais Mark Koehler, organ WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS pg. 94 *Please stand, as able. *GATHERING SONG Before You, Lord, We Bow ELW 893 Please turn and face the processional cross in the center aisle as it passes. 3

*GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *A LITANY FOR VETERANS We pause to remember those who have gone to war or defended their country in our name. We give thanks for courage, for love of country, for those who work to bring peace to our world. Remind us, O God, that the goal of any war need be justice and peace. On this day, we pause in worship to give thanks to God for veterans, those in our congregation who honorably served their country. And seek to bind up the wounds of those who served. Enable us to know how to comfort, how to bind up their wounds. And remind us, dear God, that the widow, the orphan, the widower, and the veteran - all know the cost of war. Challenge us to love the warrior but hate the cost of war. And we pray for a time when peace will reign and swords become plowshares once more, that war be known only in history books. We give thanks, Gracious God, that you remain with us as we celebrate the service of all who dared to go forth in our name. Remind us that such service is not a movie, an adventure, nor something to be glorified. Remind us that war is a failure by us to overcome hatred with love, injustice with righteousness, violence with peace. We give thanks for those who protect us from such failures. May we truly be Your people and be makers of peace. Amen. > As the veterans return to their seats, our worship continues on page 147 in the ELW < *KYRIE Lord, Have Mercy pg. 147 We sing a prayer for God s mercy to fill the church and the world. *CANTICLE OF PRAISE This Is the Feast of Victory pg. 149 As the church year draws to a close we use "Worthy Is Christ," from the book of Revelation, as our song of praise. The hymn looks forward to the day when we shall gather at the throne of the Lamb to praise Christ s holy name. 4

*PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. O God, you show forth your almighty power chiefly by reaching out to us in mercy. Grant us the fullness of your grace, strengthen our trust in your promises, and bring all the world to share in the treasures that come through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated + + + WORD + + + God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching and song. FIRST READING 1 Kings 17:8-16 Pew Bible, OT pg. 359 8 The word of the LORD came to [Elijah,] saying, 9 Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you. 10 So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink. 11 As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand. 12 But she said, As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die. 13 Elijah said to her, Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the LORD the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth. 15 She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM Praise the Almighty, My Soul Adore Him - German, arr. Theodore Beck ELW 877 This hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 146 Stanza 1 - Women & Children Stanza 2 - Men 5 St. 3 - Choir St. 4 - All SECOND READING Hebrews 9:24-28 Pew Bible, NT pg. 240 24 Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; 26 for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, Alleluia pg. 151 *GOSPEL Mark 12:38-44 Pew Bible, NT pg. 50 The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. 38 As [Jesus] taught, he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! 40 They devour widows houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. 41 He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43 Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44 For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated. SERMON POVERTY VS. GENEROSITY Pastor Michael Koch HYMN OF THE DAY I Am Trusting You, Lord Jesus LBW 460 The author Frances Havergal also wrote Take My Life, That I May Be. Musician Henry Baker also wrote the words for The King of Love My Shepherd Is. See next page > > > 6

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen 7

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION After each portion of the prayers: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. OFFERING Be the Centre - arr. Brent Roberts Mark Koehler, piano *CANTICLE OF THANKSGIVING We Give Thee but Thine Own [Stanzas 1 &2] ELW 686 Please stand and sing the first two stanzas of this hymn as the offering is presented. *THANKSGIVING FOR THE WORD pg. 220 Luther held that the Word and Sacraments were central in our worship. On Sundays when we do not celebrate the Sacrament of Communion, we thank God for the gift of the Word which we have received. The prayers conclude either: For your Word of life, O God, we give you thanks and praise. *LORD S PRAYER *BLESSING or:...be honor and glory forever. Amen. + + + SENDING + + + God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world. *SENDING SONG As Saints of Old ELW 695 *DISMISSAL Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. *PASSING OF THE PEACE 8
