Jerry Tegels Grand Knight Jason Follett Deputy Grand Knight NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2009 Brother Knights, Letter from the Grand Knight Jerry Tegels As I write this, it is a beautiful fall day as I look out my office window and think about getting out golfing one more time. But reality has set in and I know that more snow, cold temps and winter are just around the corner. We continue to be very busy supporting our church and community. The first two omelet breakfasts and the kid s Halloween party were both very successful. The Memorial Mass and Dinner on November 2nd was also well-attended and hopefully enjoyed by all, especially our guests. Thanks to all who helped with these events and a special thanks to all who helped the Social Members feel a bit pampered at the dinner. I know they appreciated it. The final numbers are not it, but it looks like we will be making a donation of about $1,800 to the OLIH Golden Opportunity Capital Campaign as a result of the 2 breakfasts. It takes many people to help with the breakfasts, but I would like to specially recognize Rob Blaser for being the primary organizer for the breakfasts and Gary Olson for helping so much. We wrapped up the PID (Tootsie Roll) drive with collection at OLIH over Halloween weekend. The total collected for the drive this year is over $11,000! This is another record-breaking year and you are all to be commended for this great accomplishment. We also concluded the Raffle For Life and raised over $8,000 for this great cause. Thanks to all who helped with these activities. Due to increased assessments from the Supreme and State KofC organizations, our costs have increased. At our recent officer s meeting, we debated whether to increase dues to cover these costs and have decided not to due to the current economic and employment conditions that affect many of our Brother Knights. Instead, we are suggesting a $5 donation be added to your dues payments. This donation is strictly voluntary and the Continued next page. Page 1
Continued from page 1 collected money will be used to help cover dues costs that cannot be paid by all of our Knights. Thanks for your understanding on this. As we approach the Christmas season, remember to always Keep Christ in Christmas. With today s society and the activities that distract us, it is easy to overlook this and put less importance on Christ during this season than there should be. As always, thanks for all that you for the Knights! Vivat Jesus, Jerry Tegels Brother Knights, Letter from the Chaplain FATHER STEVE ORR We are into the holiday months which are important times in our lives. They speak to us strongly of faith and family. With November s remembrances of those who have gone before us in faith, we celebrate and cherish the memory of our deceased family members and friends who have touched our lives. We are grateful to those who were such good examples of faith and helped us to embrace our faith in God along the way. May they rest in peace! Thanksgiving continues that theme of gratitude. Gathering family around a table of good food can be a very renewing experience for each of us. Sometimes we haven t seen each other for awhile and it is time to reconnect. Let us be grateful for family, friends, our country and our many blessings, large and small. message of the Scriptures during these weeks will ask us to wait, listen, open our hearts, welcome the Lord. We will have to work hard to carve out some quiet space to be ready to celebrate anew the birth of our Savior. One of our Advent hymns sums it up best, For you, O Lord, my soul in stillness waits, truly my hope is in you. Let us be still in the midst of the busyness and open our hearts to welcome Christ, born for us in Bethlehem. Then our Christmas joy will be refreshing of our faith and renewing of our hope so that we can share the love of Christ with one another and be true to the real meaning of Christmas...Emmanuel, God is with us! Blessings to you all, Father Steve Advent is a time of preparing which, of course, includes all the usual December busyness. But the Page 2
