A stole, special gifts, and a personalized cake will be included in the festivities at our 10:00 a.m. worship service. Our first year student, Ashleigh Neu, will bring a message on What Confirmation Means to Me from the class. Come and support John as he takes this important step into readiness for greater service in the life of our community. SPECIAL GUESTS Chrysalis will bring liturgical dance to our Confirmation Sunday worship service. The ministry of this ensemble focuses on sharing God s message with audiences throughout the year at church and community events. And, the Berrytones will sing! They have sung many times at FLC over the years and have included FLC members among them.! The two groups have a common purpose: to share the message of Christ s gospel through the arts. Our preliminary planning is that it will last three days and will be geared toward special needs children, though all children will be welcome. Watch for the announcement that our web site is up for registra tions and for volunteers. Our theme will be Camp Out: Getting S more of Jesus. Please mark a white pew envelope VBS to help with those expenses not covered by registration fees. We will also be needing a lot of volunteers serving in a variety of ministries. Make an eternal difference in the life of a child this summer. Contact VBS director Lia Gyore at 909 962-7060 or at liagyore@hotmail.com to volunteer or for more information.

Handmade quilts were presented to Ryan Craig, Kole Barrett, and Jacob Huelskamp, three graduating high school seniors, at worship in May. Members and friends of the congregation had traced a hand and signed their names, some with personal messages, on the back of the quilts in the weeks prior to the presentation. This ceremony is the seventh in a series of Christian life events in which parents, children, and baptismal sponsors come to the altar together for gifts and a blessing. A N O T E F R O M T H E P A S T OR In Rodney Stark s book, The Rise of Christianity, he describes several factors in the growth of the Early Christian Church. The message of the cross and the power of the Holy Spirit were the most significant. But the means were also important: The Romans fled their cities in times of disease. If they had unwanted children, it was acceptable to leave them exposed in the wilderness. Christians opened their homes for the sick and unwanted and then built the first hospitals and orphanages. Christians held women in high regard, equal to men in being created in God s image. The Romans respected and admired that. What is it that sets us apart today? How do we offer a better way? I would suggest that today, it is the same. The message and the power are the same. It is the means that make them visible and give us a hearing.
