Mary Magdalene E-News Connect With Us Join Our Mailing List Forward to a Friend Visit Our Church Website St. Mary Magdalene E-News August 25, 2017 A Note From Father Donald Staib Please take note of the letter from Deacon John in this E-News. We wish Deacon John and his wife Jola all God's blessings in the move they will be making. They have been part of our parish from our beginning and have been generous supporters of our new parish church and all our activities. We will miss them, but we know they will find a welcoming community at St Bernadette Parish. Our new Bishop, Luis Raphael Zarama, will arrive for his installation ceremony this week. On Monday, August 28, 2017, Vespers will be celebrated at 7pm at our new Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. No tickets are necessary for this liturgy, as seating will be made available to all the faithful and visitors who wish to attend. Following Vespers, Bishop Zarama will greet in the Narthex of the Cathedral those in attendance. Light refreshments will be made available directly outside the Narthex of the Cathedral. On the front wall of our church there are or soon will be two signs with electronic hymn numbers. We will continue to print them in the bulletin also, at least for a while. Also - I will not announce anymore the Offertory Helpers. The children seem to find a way to check that out each week. On Thursday we had the first school Mass in the new church. It was a much different experience from the gym. In the gym the younger students sat on the floor, with the older grades in the bleachers. When talking to the students after the Gospel I was standing in the middle of them. I will have to get used to the more formal atmosphere in the new worship space. Thursday was the feast of St Bartholomew. He was invited by the Apostle Philip to 'come and see' Jesus. That is a good invitation for students to come and see new classmates, new teachers, new textbooks, new topics to learn. We elders are also invited to 'come and see.' A question about our new church Will there be holy water fonts at the entrance? Taking holy water and blessing ourselves coming into church is a reminder of our baptism. Since our real Baptism Font is central to our worship space [a unique feature of St Mary Magdalene] -- when of 7 9/7/2017, 12:02 PM

2 of 7 9/7/2017, 12:02 PM entering the church walk first to the Font for the Baptism Water. Then proceed to your chosen pew. Putting the Baptism Font in the center of our worship space was intended to make this significant reminder of the waters of baptism very visible and help us remember this is where our journey as a Christian began. Father Donald Staib donfs22@aol.com St. Mary Magdalene E-News Now That The New Church Is Completed! It is time to move into a new phase of parish life. The generosity of many people made it possible for us to enjoy a new church for worship. It will take about 15 years to complete our debt payments and we will have larger operating costs to challenge us in the days to come. Now that we do not need to make weekly construction reports we will revise our comments in this space. Soon we will prepare some information about our parish finances. You will not be surprised to know that we continue to rely on the generosity of parish members. We encourage generosity in our weekly offertory and in the special once a month envelope to help pay for the church construction. We will provide more information in the weeks to come. DONATE NOW To OUR NEW CHURCH (Click on the above link to Donate) Farewell Letter from Deacon John Hubisz Dear Folks at St. Mary Magdalene Parish, My wife Jola and I have thoroughly enjoyed our service here at St. Mary Magdalene. Now the time has come to make a change. About a year ago, we moved from Apex to Fuquay-Varina. At first, this did not seem to be a radical change, but the time and distances do add up. It is 25 minutes one way and 24 miles round trip, plus tolls, from our home to STMM. It is no longer a "quick trip" in response to a phone call. We had been thinking about this for some time, but did not want to make any changes while we were building a church. Now the beautiful plans have become real, and we feel we can leave with pride and smiles for you all as you continue to make this new church a vibrant, holy, and caring place. You are truly an amazing group! I understand that although I am not the oldest deacon in our Diocese, I am the longest serving deacon (42 years and counting). Moving closer to home will be easier for us, as St. Bernadette is only three miles away from our home in Fuquay-Varina. I have spoken with Fr. Fernando Torres and look forward to working with him and the parishioners of St. Bernadette. Many thanks to Celeste Usischon for her work with RCIA. It has been a special joy for me to help. I hope to continue helping when needed. Deacon Joe LaPierre and I will continue to meet regularly, along with any other deacons who might

3 of 7 9/7/2017, 12:02 PM wish to join us. I first met Father Staib at Father John Wall's many years ago when I learned that Father Staib was getting a new parish. Father Wall suggested that I help out at St. Mary Magdalene whenever I could. I assisted at one Mass a week starting at Apex Middle School for a while and was assigned to St. Mary Magdalene by Bishop Gossman in 2006. I have been thankful to Father Wall for the suggestion and especially to Father Staib for taking me on, ever since. Best wishes, Deacon John Hubisz Pictures of the Week Our First School Mass in the New Church! Jonah Statue engravings are finished - stop by and take a look! Youth Ministry Beach Retreat 2017 last weekend was a great success!

4 of 7 9/7/2017, 12:02 PM New Church Dedication Video If you wish to see the 2 hour video of our church dedication, here it is: Dedication Day Video Reflection Filmmaker Ken Burns and his production partner Lynn Novick unveil their latest documentary, The Vietnam War, a new 10-part, 18-hour series. It joins their other collaborations, which include Baseball, The Civil War, and Prohibition. All wars are fought twice, writer Viet Thanh Nguyen has said-first on the field of battle and then in our memory. Ken Burns noted: The seeds of many of the troubles that beset us today-alienation, resentment and cynicism; mistrust of our government and each other; breakdown of civil discourse and civic institutions-were sewn during the Vietnam War. Until we find a way to come to terms with this unsettled and enormously consequential event, its ghosts will continue to haunt us. At this fractious moment we are obligated more than ever to study the complicated history of the war, to rediscover what we have forgotten, reexamine what we remember and misremember and to learn what we never knew. Safe Environment Training Safe Environment Training-Adults wishing to volunteer with youth at StMM are required to fill out a volunteer application and attend Safe Environment training. Our next sessions will be Mon, Aug 28th at 6:30pm & Thurs, Aug. 31st at 6:30pm. The session will last approx. 2 hours and is for adults only as the presentation is not appropriate for children.
