COMMUNION We invite all baptized Christians who acknowledge their sinfulness, trust in Christ as their Savior, and who recognize the real presence of Christ s Body and Blood in the bread and wine to join us at the Communion table. The practice of our congregation is to place the bread into the extended hand of the communicant. The wine is offered in both individual cups and the chalice. If you wish to receive it from an individual cup, please take one from the tray as it is offered by the Elder. The cups in the center of the tray are filled with non-alcoholic wine, in consideration of persons who should not drink wine. Also, children who have not received Communion instruction are invited to come to the Communion rail, fold their hands and receive a blessing.

The Lutheran Church of Vestavia Hills The First Sunday in Advent December 2, 2018 PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN The Advent of Our King LSB #331 5 Before the dawning day Let sin s dark deeds be gone, The sinful self be put away, The new self now put on. 6 All glory to the Son, Who comes to set us free, With Father, Spirit, ever one Through all eternity. 1

OPENING VERSICLES The Spirit and the Church cry out: Come, Lord Jesus. All those who await His appearance pray: Come, Lord Jesus. The whole creation pleads: Come, Lord Jesus. 2

INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen. 3

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH On the First Sunday of Advent, the first blue candle is lit. This candle is called the Prophecy Candle in remembrance of the prophets, primarily Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. This candle represents hope or expectation in anticipation of the coming Messiah. RESPONSE O Come, O Come, Emmanuel LSB #357 (v. 1) 4

OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 33:14-16 (The righteous branch of David will establish righteousness in Judah) 14 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: The LORD is our righteousness. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CHORAL ANTHEM (10:30) The Kingdom is Coming Soon Let the angels sing. EPISTLE READING 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 (Paul gives thanks to God for the faith of the Thessalonians) 9 What thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith? 11 Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, 12 and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, 13 so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL PREPARATION VERSE Hark the Glad Sound LSB #349 (v. 1) 6

HOLY GOSPEL Luke 19:28-40 The Holy Gospel for this First Sunday in Advent is from St. Luke, the nineteenth chapter. Glory be to You, O Lord. (Jesus enters triumphantly into Jerusalem) 28 When he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? you shall say this: The Lord has need of it. 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, Why are you untying the colt? 34 And they said, The Lord has need of it. 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near already on the way down the Mount of Olives the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, Teacher, rebuke your disciples. 40 He answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLES CREED (inside back cover of the LSB hymnal) CHILDREN S SERMON 7
