For most of Jesus' ministry, he remains in Galilee and areas with a predominantly Jewish population. Today, however, we see Jesus traveling through a heavily pagan area. This makes the utterance of faith in today's Gospel all the more astounding. "He has done all things well." In this story, a deaf man is brought to Jesus. This man is not without community! Despite communication difficulties due to a speech impediment, his people bring him before Jesus. Jesus lays hands upon the man and commands his broken body to change. "'Be opened!' Immediately the man's ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly." The community is stunned. They can't stop telling the story. The more Jesus asks them to settle down, the more they proclaim! The Jewish people expected a Messiah but a Messiah with very particular qualifications. The Greeks and pagans anticipated no such savior. There were no expectations to meet. They had a special capacity to be completely, utterly surprised. As Catholics, it can be easy to become accustomed to the songs and the prayers, to the routine of religious education drop-offs and Sunday Mass attendance. By now, we may have very particular expectations. When was the last time you allowed yourself to be surprised by God? Sometimes we are all like the deaf man in today's Gospel. God wants to speak to us, but we can't hear clearly. In your prayer this week, go before God honestly. Give yourself permission to drop your expectations and assumptions. Ask Him to renew your faith to show you how, in your life, "He has done all things well." Prayer for Pope Francis Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to Your shepherd, Pope Francis, a spirit of courage and right judgement, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter and vicar of Christ, build Your church into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

SEPTEMBER 9, 2018 TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 A Message From Father Bob With great sadness, I share that both Joanne Castello and Dana Knox will be leaving Holy Sepulcher Parish to pursue other employment opportunities. Dana has faithfully served as Parish Secretary for over seven years and Joanne has served the parish as an Administrative Assistant to the Pastor and also in the Faith Formation Office for the past ten years. Joanne was responsible for scheduling all Funerals and Baptisms plus other duties that came up daily. Joanne also served as the Parish Safe Environment Coordinator. When you would call the Parish Office, you would hear the pleasant voice of Dana answering the phone. Dana was also responsible for doing the weekly Parish bulletin and scheduling Mass Intentions and parish meetings. These are only SOME of the duties that Dana and Joanne were responsible for. Dana s last day will be on Friday, September 7, 2018 and Joanne s last day will be on Thursday, September 20, 2018. On behalf of the Parish, I offer my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Joanne and Dana for their service and dedication to Holy Sepulcher Parish. May God A note from Dana Knox Dear Parishioners, Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your parish secretary for the past 7-1/2 years; I have enjoyed the work I did at Holy Sepulcher. This is an amazing parish and you have all made me feel like I was part of a family. I have made many friends and I cherish all those friendships. My reason for leaving is because a new opportunity that I could not pass up presented itself. But this doesn t have to be goodbye! You might hear me playing flute at a Mass, or see me at the Bazaar or helping at the Fair Trade Sale. I will forever keep you in my prayers. Dana Knox The St. Vincent de Paul Society is an international society founded by Frederic Ozanam, a French priest who spent his life ministering to the poor & under privileged in Paris, France. The organization was named after the patron saint, St. Vincent de Paul. This society, although it operates apart from the parish, works in conjunction with the diocese to assist the poor & needy in southern Butler County. Donations put in the Poor Box in the back of the Sanctuary support this cause. If you would like to be a part of this outreach organization, contact the parish office. Bishop s Education Fund Collection This Week Catholic schools are one of the best ways through which the Church brings young people into a relationship with Jesus and prepares them for life. Our schools provide: Spiritual formation that encourages virtue Gospel values that promote respect, compassion and service Academic excellence leading to success in higher education The Bishop s Education Fund provides tuition assistance for Catholic families who qualify; yet this support covers less than half the demonstrated need. The Bishop s Education Fund collection will be on this weekend September 8/9. Holy Sepulcher School is a special place with a unique caring culture. As a small school: Holy Sepulcher offers students a challenging, compassionate and tight-knit community Holy Sepulcher embraces rigorous academic standards in the context of a rich Catholic tradition Holy Sepulcher serves children of all faiths Faith and values are integrated into the classroom environment, sports and extracurricular activities and in service to the community Holy Sepulcher Students receive personal attention from teachers who regard each one of them as special and unique. Many Holy Sepulcher Graduates have gone on to higher education and are now successful corporate business owners, teachers, lawyers and a variety of other professional careers. The goal of Holy Sepulcher School is that each child becomes a life-long learner who strives to reach his or her fullest potential. RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, which is a process through which non-baptized adults enter the Catholic Church. It can also include those who have been baptized in other Christian denominations who seek to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Often baptized Catholics who have not received other sacraments or who know little about the faith or have not practiced their faith for some time participate in the RCIA as a means to complete their initiation into the Church. If you or someone you know would like to be a part of this process, call the Faith Formation Office to register.

Even as we read the accounts of the miracles Jesus worked, like the healing of the deaf and mute man in today s Gospel, we are amazed at the powerful love of God at work to heal and strengthen us. In particular, Jesus cry of Ephphatha! (be opened!), is not simply so that the deaf man s ears would be open and that his tongue would be freed. It is also a call for his heart to be opened in faith and trust in God. The Lord cries out Ephphatha! for us, too, that we might be opened to his powerful love at work for and in and through us. This is not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of our parishes, our communities, the Church and the world. As we prepare for the implementation of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, the Lord invites us to be opened to the work of the Spirit so that we can be strengthened for the work of building the Church. If we can be amazed by what God works for those in the Scriptures, we can certainly be amazed by what God can work through us. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
