THE DOVE The Dove: Sharing the Good News at CALC November 2018 From the Pastor The Feast of St Andrew is the last festival of the church year, traditionally celebrated on November 30 th. Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter and appears often in the gospels as part of Jesus inner circle. Andrew was actually the first of the twelve disciples, a fisherman who left his net to follow Jesus. He then brought others, including his brother Simon Peter, to Jesus. Because of this, the Byzantine church claims Andrew as their patron, and refers to him in the words of John Chrysostom as the Peter before Peter. Later, with Philip, Andrew brings a number of Greeks to speak with Jesus, and Andrew is the one who finds the boy with five loaves and two fish. It is said that Andrew died by crucifixion on an X-shaped cross in the city of Patras. Tradition holds that he requested this different kind of cross as he did not seem himself as worthy to be crucified n the same way as Jesus. However, images of Andrew on this cross does become standard until the Middle Ages, so it can be difficult to separate the myth of tradition from historical accounting. THIS MONTH. Good Brews On hiatus this month Book Group Nov. 12, 7:00 pm Council Meeting Nov. 13, Child Care Meeting Nov. 20, Movie Night Nov. 26, 7:00 pm Andrew is the patron saint of Barbados, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Ukraine, and other countries and cities. In Scotland, St Andrew s Day is a national bank holiday, and the day is celebrated with traditional Scottish food, music, and dance. Since it falls in wintertime, it is often connected with winter festivals and pagan rituals. In other countries, St Andrew s Eve is connected with superstitions related to vampires and future-telling. Wednesdays As St Andrew s Eve and Day approaches for us, how might we remember this influential member of Jesus disciples and former of the early church? Whether we mark the day with Scottish food or eastern European music, let us be inspired by Andrew s story and remember that God can call any one from any path to be followers of Jesus Christ. Almighty God, you gave your apostle Andrew the grace to obey the call of your Son to bring his brother to Jesus. Give us also, who are called by your holy word, grace to follow Jesus without delay and to bring into his presence those whoa re near to us, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (ELW, 54)

A Few s on As we consider the themes of Luke mentioned above and our call to healing and wholeness in our community, some worship about worship in the coming months: This September, Council discussed the issue of accessibility to our Sanctuary. This has been an ongoing conversation for some time since our Sanctuary is not currently handicapped accessible. Talk about a Ramp to the Sanctuary is ongoing and still very much on our radar. For now, however, as a way of embracing our wider community and ensure that worship here at Christ Ascension remains welcoming to all, Council has planned that on the Second Sunday of the month we will worship in Kimes Hall. The worship will be the same worship, we will share in and Sacrament and Song, but we will do so in a building that has a ramp, less stairs, and lower thresholds for greater mobility. There will be a dedicated period of 3 months (October, November, December) at the end of which we will re-evaluate our need and this means of welcome to those who need greater accessibility to our worship. There will be opportunities for feedback at the end of this period. However, in the meanwhile, if you have questions, comments, suggestions, or ideas please do not hesitate to contact Pastor Jay by e-mail (pastor@christascension.org). Choir Season begins again! If you are able to... 1. Carry a tune (no need to read music ) 2. Blend with the group and 3. Attend rehearsals & services most of the time, please speak with Katherine or Charlotte and join us for rehearsals on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am. If you would like to commit for only a month or two, or just want to come & check us out, that s good too! (Sopranos and altos are especially needed.) Sing a new song to the Lord!
