THE PASSION of PALM SUNDAY 2015 THE COMING OF THE KING, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER JHX 385 SUNDAY MARCH 29, 2015 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: The Cross Part 1 The Palm Sunday Ministry of Jesus Christ His Kingship, His Lordship and His Godhood On Display. SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: The Cross, Palm Sunday, Prophecy, God s Love Introduction to the Text; Romans 1:15-17 The Theme and Textual Summation of the Passage Romans 1:15-17 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also. :16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, The just shall live by faith. I am not sure if you have had the opportunity to see the Crown Jewels of England But it is rather impressive and a bit overwhelming. They are a special thing to behold. It is the best that this world has to offer. In fact - the value of the Crown Jewels is - - - you guessed it, they ve been literally declared as Priceless. Not because of the uniqueness of the Jewels. Not because of the crowns and the scepters that are one of a kind but because of what they mean and what they represent. There in London, on display, would be the crown that the Sovereign of the Realm A Crown of New Zealand. A Crown of Egypt, A Crown of India, A Crown of Canada, This is the Value of What Men Place on Things 1

Webster s 1828 Dictionary of English Defines Majesty as The aspect, manner, quality or state of a person or thing which inspires awe or reverence in the beholder with peculiar propriety to God and His works. The LORD reigns; He is clothed in majesty. Psalm 93. The voice of the LORD is full of majesty. Psalm 29. 1.) There is the majesty of The Cross Romans 1:16-17a For I am not ashamed of the gospel (cross) of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed 1a.) His arrival was (is) majestic This Week in History. Jesus ministry has reached Rock Star Status. Its as though the world is talking about Him. He has just raised His friend Lazarus from the dead and now the Jewish religious leadership are out to destroy Him. Majestic Because - It was all prearranged. ( who is in control of the events and the moment? ) Matthew 21:1-11 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, The Lord has need of them, and immediately he will send them. :4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet (Zechariah), saying: 5 Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. :6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. 8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees (Psalm) and spread them on the road. 9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! Hosanna in the highest! :10 And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? :11 So the multitudes said, This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee. In one grand and sweeping moment, 2 prophecies of the Bible are not only fulfilled before eyewitnesses but those prophecies belong to just One. The Magnitude of the Moment was lost on no one: For over 1,000 years the Jews from around the world understood perfectly well - that the Messiah of Israel was to be to them would one day come! Psalm 118:24-27a This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. 25 Save now, (Hosanna) I pray, O LORD; O LORD, I pray, send now prosperity. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We have blessed you from the house of the LORD. 27 God is the LORD, And He has given us light; 2

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. How would CNN, FOX, ABC, BBC or Aljazeera Report This Moment? If you re Jewish this morning, Listen carefully to this, If you re not Jewish this morning, Listen carefully to this, Jesus was a Jew and He knew the O.T. scriptures. The Jews were Jews, and they knew the O.T. scriptures. The Pharisees were Jews and they knew the O.T. scriptures. so answer this (a) why would Jesus be doing this in light of the Bible? And (b) why would the Jewish people be joining in on this apparent blasphemy and (c) why are the national leaders trying to cover it all up? Right in the Midst of this Palm Sunday John 12:19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, You see (blaming) that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him! God Values the Moment Because The Cross is Ahead. The cross stands as the most important marker to all of mankind. ( not just a marker it s what it stands for is what makes it priceless ) Jack, Why Should I Care? Because what God does is absolutely deliberate and of eternal value. He will require you /me to know this. Palm Sunday is an Undeniable, irrefutable fact of history - It literally proves the existence of both God and that Jesus Christ Here s a Big Claim is Lord. The Bible says that God was the One who engineered the Cross. The Bible says that God was Looking Forward with Anticipation. The Bible says that Jesus Christ had an Appointment with the Cross. The Bible says that God was moving Heaven and Earth toward the Cross. 1b.) His purpose was (is) majestic The Majesty of The Cross 3

The Old Testament teaches from Genesis to Malachi, the Messiah would be both the sacrifice and the king. That he would be both Servant and Savior. There is no Biblical or historical contradiction With what the Bible has to say about who the Messiah is. The Servant King. The Suffering Savior. From Genesis to Malachi there are some 300 specific prophecies detailing the coming of the Anointed One, The Messiah, like: (1) His virgin birth, (2) Him having to be born in Bethlehem, (3) Him having to be from the tribe of Judah, (4) He had to be of the genealogical-hematological line of King David, (5) He had to be sinless, (6) and He would have to Atone for the sins of His people, (7) He would have to die by being pierced or nailed. (8) He would have to die (9) He would have to be resurrected and (10) He would have to be a Jew who would reveal Himself first to the Jews and to the Nation of Israel (there was no Palestine in those days. not until 135 ad.) The Servant King. The Suffering Savior. Psalm 22 & Isaiah 53 Answers the Skeptics. Palm Sunday is also known as the Triumphal Entry but did you know that it is also considered His Presentation or His First Coming Malachi 3:1b For the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, 1c.) His demand was (is) majestic The Majesty of The Cross Jesus well engineered arrival demanded a response from the people. Whenever Jesus Christ is introduced into a conversation, into an issue, or into a culture God demands a response. Isaiah 55:11 So shall My word (Jesus) be that goes forth from My mouth; It (He) shall not return to Me void, But it (He) shall accomplish what I please, And it (He) shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it (Him). Matthew 23:37-39 (F1) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 38 (F1) See! Your house is left to you desolate; 39 (S2) for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! ( Psalm 118:26 ) 4

Luke 19:37-44 Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, 38 saying: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! :39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, Teacher, rebuke Your disciples. :40 But He answered and said to them, I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out. :41 Now as He drew near (egg-nid-zo to appear before to present yourself before another), He saw the city and wept (to heave the chest, to bemoan, a lamentation) over it, (this is as close as He will get for some 2,000 years) 42 saying, If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44 and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, BECAUSE you did not know (to neglect every opportunity before you) the time of your visitation. During This Week in History, Jesus makes 3 key visitations to the Temple Mount. The First visit was on the Sabbath-Saturday, Jesus Presents Himself and is recognized as The Prophet The Second visit was this Palm Sunday, Jesus Presents Himself and is recognized as The King. The Third visit was on Monday, Jesus Presents Himself and is recognized as The Priest. Matthew 24:1-4a Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. 2 And Jesus said to them, Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down. :3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, Tell us, (1) when will these things be? And (2) what will be the sign of Your coming, and (3) of the end of the age? :4a And Jesus answered and said to them Prophetic Topic Messiah s First Coming Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. Why should they rejoice, why should they shout? - - because one of the greatest prophecies in all of the Bible would be happening right before their very eyes. It may be, without hype, the most important prophecy in the entire Bible and here is why Daniel 9:22-27 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. 23 At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision: 24 Seventy weeks (490) are determined For your people and for your holy city, To (F1) finish the transgression, To (F1) make an end of sins, To (F1) make reconciliation for iniquity, To (S2) bring in everlasting righteousness, To (S2) seal up vision and prophecy, And to (S2) anoint the Most Holy. 25 5

Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks (49) and sixty-two weeks (434 years) (49 years +434 years = 483 years) The street shall be built again, and the wall, Even in troublesome times. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks (on the 483 rd year) Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come (490 years 483 years = the 7 years of tribulation) Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary (F1) = First Coming. (S2) = Second Coming. From March 14 th 445 b.c. the day King Artaxerxes gave the command to Nehemiah to go back to Jerusalem to restore the streets and the walls of Jerusalem - - to the day (F1) that Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem on the very first Palm Sunday, April 6 th 32 a.d. would be 177,880 days = or 483 years. Leaving a 7 year period of time to be fulfilled at the End of Days when (S2) once again the LORD sets His hand upon Israel, and the Jews and Jerusalem in preparation for His Second Coming. Palm Sunday is like a Pause Button (1) It both fulfills the 69 th Week of Daniel Prophecy Messiah Comes and (2) it also Fulfills the Prophecies that Israel s Messiah had to be offered up and be killed for the sins of the nation and for the world.
