FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT, MARCH 9, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK In some ways, the season of Lent is a bit untidy. Even a search for its verbal root can yield different explanations. Its most common derivation is from the Middle-English word lenten ( springtime ), although some authorities say it comes from a word meaning to lengthen, a reference to the fact that days are getting longer at this time of year. Since this amounts to the same thing when you think about it, both interpretations seem to be legitimate. According to scholars of the liturgy, the season originated in the third century, chiefly as a time of preparation for Easter. As was often the case with early Christian observances, regional differences appeared, which is not surprising in view of the lack of anything like today s instantaneous communications capabilities. And so, the Eastern traditions developed a more stringent regimen of fasting and penance than the Western ones practice. Even the method of counting the forty days of Lent, which became associated with the time of Jesus s prayer sojourn in the desert before his public ministry, differed. Because the Latin West never counted Sundays as days for fasting, Ash Wednesday and the remaining days of its week were added to the Lenten roster to achieve the desired total of forty. Lent has had different points of emphasis during various eras, all of them admissible aspects of its variety and importance. And so we have penitential disciplines (such as fasting, and the refraining from meat on Fridays) to toughen our resolve to live the demands of the Christian life; and the Exodus theme of God s liberating deeds, which we inherit from the Old Testament tradition; the renewed appreciation of the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Penance, all ultimately deriving from the Lord s saving death and resurrection; and our communal sharing in the journey toward Christian life of the Church s catechumens, who are completing their preparations for the sacraments that will unite them to Christ a journey that we who are already initiated strive to refresh in ourselves. For us who have long been in the Church, Peter Mazar has some interesting and challenging words: SPECIAL INVITATION TO ALL MOMS A new ministry is forming at Saint Joseph Parish! M.O.M. (Ministry of Motherhood) Come join us for the first monthly meeting: A Mother s Evening of Prayer Making Lent Something Beautiful for God All mothers are cordially invited to join us on Wednesday, March 12 from 7:30 to 9:00 pm in the Rectory Meeting Room (entrance in the back). This (adult-only*) evening will include: Coffee, tea and light refreshments Prayerful time to reflect on a mother s unique challenges, ordinary routines and the extraordinary love of Christ Faith Sharing on the upcoming Lenten Gospel Any questions, please contact Maureen Hunt at 908-770-2969 or Jean Tenaglia at 201-261-0595. (* This is a special time just for Moms. Future activities for children may be planned.) What baptism began in us can readily be undone and probably has been. Coming back to baptism is hard work, like pruning vines, like plowing the earth, like the discipline of training for a contest. Of course, neither the hard work nor the training do the job. All of us, the faithful and the elect and the penitents, will learn this once again, when Lent is over and we have failed but God has not. Msgr. David Hubba 3

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Matthew 4:1-11. Today is the First Sunday of Lent. We remember the time the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert for forty days. During this time, Jesus fasted and prayed for the strength to carry out God s mission. Jesus was powerful and could have used his power to get whatever he wanted food, land to rule, or even angels to help him. However, Jesus stayed close to God and used all his power to do what God wanted him to do. God wants us to be like Jesus. We need to be strong and to say no to temptation. During Lent we are asked to give up something that we like. We might watch TV or play video games for only one hour a day and then spend some time praying, helping others, or reading about God. Jesus could have used his power to rule all lands, but instead he did what God wanted him to do. If we pray every day, we will have the strength to stay close to God always. NOTE TO PARENTS-WE NEED YOUR HELP The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 8:30 A.M. Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church/mary s Chapel for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. They return before the presentation of gifts to continue the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We are looking for volunteers to be part of this committee. Contact us at kids@sjcnj.org if you would like to help. 6
