THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 18, 2018 Most Reverend Edward K. Braxton Bishop of Belleville We, the people of St. Clare Catholic Parish, In the Diocese of Belleville, are called by God in baptism to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Centered in the Eucharist, and strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we strive to live the Gospel and further the reign of God. From Our Pastor, Fr. Jim... Happy Thanksgiving! Many of us think of Thanksgiving as a feast of family time, when coming together simply for food and friendship is such a holy time. But I also want to acknowledge those in our parish who have little or no family around them this week and to let you know that your parish is your family and we are here for you. At least for me, this parish of St. Clare is truly my family for whom I am forever grateful. Like family members, you have been there for me in prayer and support, to challenge and love. I have tried my best to be a supportive, caring family member for you as well and that gives me great joy and fulfillment. Throughout the year I try and express my gratitude for you and what you do and give to our parish that inspires me. Ultimately, our thanksgiving flows toward and out of the Eucharist, which is the best prayer of thanksgiving we have. Each Mass is meant to be a place where we each bring hearts of gratitude to express to God our thankfulness for the blessings in our life. If we can practice and teach our children to be grateful on a daily basis, it increases our desire to come to Mass to sing gratitude! Try and keep a little note pad by your bedside and write down every night 3-4 things for which you are grateful. (Great exercise to do with children!) Then by the weekend, we have a long list of thanks to bring with us to Mass. Please join us for Mass on Thanksgiving Day morning at 9:00 a.m. With sincere gratitude, Fr. Jim Deiters Recent Death: Bill Musser We extend our prayerful and loving sympathy to his wife, Pat, and their children, Kathy (Mike) Quirk, Bill (Binky), Kevin, Mark (Angie) and their grandchildren. May he rest in the peace and love of Christ. A Prayer for Your Thanksgiving Table God, source and giver of all things, we give You thanks on this Thanksgiving Day for the beauty of the whole of creation. We give You thanks for the blessings of family and friends; those gathered around this table and those who are present only in our hearts. We give You thanks for this food, prepared by loving hands, and for the graces You provide to nourish our bodies, minds and hearts so that we might better serve You. Help us to be faithful stewards of all that has been given to us. May we reflect that which we have received to all we meet, especially the less fortunate in our midst. HOPE FOR THE JOURNEY Wednesday November 28 2 p.m. St. Clare Church Library Our parish is blessed to have two different processional crosses for use at Mass. The carved, wooden cross used most often came from our original church and dates back to the late 1800 s. The other is the large, ornate silver Ethiopian Coptic cross we carry in procession during the liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas and Easter. This unique and beautiful piece of religious art will be depicted on our limited-edition parish Christmas ornament this year. You can make this image a part of your own Christmas celebration by taking home one of our beautiful porcelain ornaments depicting the Coptic Cross on the front and this passage from Philippians on the back: Jesus emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, coming in human likeness. The ornament is the 11th in a series of collectors ornaments featuring the art and architecture of our church. Ornaments will be sold for $10 each after weekend Masses starting December 1. A limited number of ornaments from previous years will be available. Proceeds benefit the parish s building fund. For questions or more information, contact Ellen Gravlin at 531-9151. A detailed story on this cross will be featured in our next edition of The Eye Opener! Watch your mail for our newsletter! A big thank you to our generous parishioners who made a donation to Fontebella Maternity Home during the Baby Bottle campaign! We raised over $6,200 for pregnant women in need!!! Thank you!!! The Respect Life Committee Hope for the Journey is a ministry reaching out to anyone that has experienced the loss of a loved one, recent or not. We meet for conversation, suggested reading, encouragement, prayer and to walk this journey with you. For more information, please contact the parish office or Ken and Barb Kenney at kj_kenney@sbcglobal.netor 726-7587. Everyone is invited to pray for and send notes of encouragement to the seminarians from our parish during the Thanksgiving and Advent seasons. Joel Seipp and Nick Fleming, both of whom grew up in St. Clare Parish and graduated from St. Clare School, are discerning the priesthood in the Diocese of Belleville and are in their fifth year of studies. Will be visiting our parish! November 24 & 25 The Daughters of St. Paul are Religious Sisters whose mission is to communicate the Gospel with the media, in the spirit of St. Paul. Their publications of Catholic books, music and DVDs, for both children & adults, will be available for purchase after the weekend Masses. Special request? Call Sr. Laura at 314-965-3512. Advent Booklets, with reflections, written by our own parishioners, will once again be available. Please pick one up Thanksgiving weekend. Fair Trade Sale Fair trade brings attention to people around the world who work under exploitative conditions and highlights the true cost of goods in global supply chains. Organizations, businesses, farmers, workers and artisans have worked diligently for more than 50 years to make trade more fair. Fair trade supports farmers and craftspeople in developing countries who are socially and economically marginalized. These producers often face steep hurdles in finding markets and customers for their goods. Our sale features beautiful handmade baskets of various sizes, designs and colors; clothing items, decorations, jewelry and food. In addition to providing a living wage to workers, profits from the sale of some of these items also go to benefit some service outreach ministries. Thank you for participating! November 17 & 18 After Mass In the Fellowship Hall Please choose a name tag from our giving tree this weekend. Each name belongs to a family or family member being helped by our SVDP or Fontebella Maternity Home. Please bring nonperishable foods to Thanksgiving Day Mass or that weekend to help provide for those who are in need and go hungry. All the food will be given to the O Fallon Township Food Pantry. Shop for the gift, wrap it (no bows please), place the identifying tag on the OUTSIDE of the package securely, and return the gift to church by December 8. This is a great way for family members to give together! Canned Meats Canned Chicken Broth Canned Fruit Boxed Noodles Cake Mixes Sugar Flour Cooking Oil Please, no glass containers!
