Dear friends of Jesus and disciples of His Sacred Heart, When Our Lord appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the years 167375, confiding to her the secrets of His Sacred Heart, He asked her to keep the first Friday of each month and the night preceding it as a special time of penance, prayer, and reparation for sins committed against Him and His Divine Love. In this spirit of reparation for sin, I would like to invite you to participate in this year s Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, beginning at noon on Friday, October 5, 2018, here at Sacred Heart of Jesus. This will be our sixth consecutive year offering a public novena of nine first Fridays in accord with Our Lord s explicit request. Our holy and beloved, the Mystical Body of Christ and His beloved Bride, is in great need of purification at this time, in need of penance, reparation, and prayer offered by His special friends. It is indeed a sacrifice to set one hour aside for nine consecutive first Fridays and to make the effort to be present for a novena such as this, but the effort we make to offer our time and our heartfelt prayer to the Lord in this manner is an act of reparation that consoles His Sacred Heart. Our public intention at this year s novena, in addition to the private intentions which you will bring, is to offer these nine months of prayer from October 2018-June 2019 in reparation for the sins of the clergy and for the healing of wounded souls. The following is a special chaplet of reparation which will be offered just before Mass begins on the first Friday of each month, at 11:45 AM: Chaplet of Reparation For Sins of the Clergy and For the Healing of Wounded Souls On the Our Father beads: L: Eternal Father, I offer You the Precious Blood of Your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb without blemish or spot, R: in reparation for my sins and for the sins of all Your priests. On the Hail Mary beads: L: By Your Precious Blood, O Jesus, R: Purify and sanctify Your priests. In place of the Glory be to the Father: L: O Father, from whom all fatherhood in heaven and on earth is named, R: have mercy on all Your priests, and wash them in the Blood of the Lamb, and heal those souls wounded by sins against Your love. To pick up a pin for love can convert a soul. Thérèse Martin entered the convent at the age of 15 and died in 1897 at the age of 24. Life in a Carmelite convent is indeed uneventful and consists mainly of prayer and hard domestic work. But Thérèse understood that it was in the day-to-day events of life that sanctity could be found. Thérèse said she came to Carmel to save souls and pray for priests, and this she did following her little way of doing small things with great love. She was canonized in 1925, and on October 19, 1997, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the, the third woman to be so recognized. Tuesday, October 2: The Holy Guardian Angels: A feast in honor of the guardian angels was first observed in the 16th century, and then in 1615, Pope Paul V added it to the Roman calendar. The concept of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each human being is a development of Catholic doctrine and piety based on Scripture but not directly drawn from it. Jesus words in Matthew 18:10 best support the belief: See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. Devotion to the angels began to develop with the birth of the monastic tradition. Saint Benedict gave it impetus and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the great 12th-century reformer, was such an eloquent spokesman for the guardian angels that angelic devotion assumed its current form in his day. Wednesday, October 3: Weekday Thursday, October 4: St. Francis of Assisi: Francis was noted for his charismatic personality, deep compassion for all, and his love for God s creation. After a deep conversion experience he renounced his family s wealth to follow Lady Poverty. He is the founder of the Franciscan order, at the time a revolutionary new form of religious life. He is the author of Canticle of the Sun, and he received the stigmata in 1224. Francis was canonized only two years after his death. He is the patron saint, among many other groups, of ecologists and of the nation of Italy. Friday, October 5: Bl. Francis Xavier Seelos; St. Maria Faustina Kowalska: St. Faustina, was born in Poland, on August 25, 1905. She became a sister of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in 1925. Her years at the convent were filled with extraordinary gifts: revelations, visions, hidden stigmata, participation in the Passion of the Lord, the gift of bilocation, the reading of human souls, the gift of prophecy, and the rare gift of mystical engagement and marriage. Beginning on February 22, 1931, and until her death in 1938, Saint Faustina received revelations and visits from Christ. In 1934, she began recording these in a diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul. She is known as the Disciple of Divine Mercy and was canonized on April 30, 2000 Divine Mercy Sunday Saturday, October 6: St. Bruno, Priest: St Bruno lived in the 11th century. He was a celebrated teacher and a close advisor to his former pupil, Pope Urban II. He founded La Grande Chartreuse [or Charterhouse], the motherhouse of the Carthusian monks.
