The Epiphany of the Lord January 7, 2018 In today s Gospel reading from Matthew, we hear about the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh being brought to the infant Jesus. Matthew s Gospel narrative is a depiction of the fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah that we heard in today s First Reading and within its original ancient context, this 3 rd section of Isaiah attempted to encourage the newly returned Israelite exiles that they would be radiant their light has come and nations shall walk by your light. Today s Feast, also remembered as Little Christmas serves to conclude the 12 Days of Christmas celebrating the Birth of Jesus Christ and tomorrow we celebrate the first day of Ordinary Time with the Baptism of the Lord. It would seem most appropriate to begin the Ordinary Time with a resolution of HOW to offer the gifts and talents received (not the presents we received at this time of the year), but the gifts and talents bestowed on us by our good and gracious God at our birth! HOW will we be radiant (Isaiah s words) and walk in the light this New Year? We HAVE so much you and me. We NEED very little you and me. Yet, we WANT a lot you and me. Perhaps the WANT can be altered slightly this New Year with the WANT to give of ourselves in a new way, in a different way that will reflect the light of Christ within us? And as a parallel to the magi, what gold, frankincense and myrrh will you offer to the King? With the conclusion of the Christmas Season on Monday, the maintenance staff and Art & Environment elves will be busy taking it all down; the trees and poinsettias, wreaths and fabrics, angels and statues and the Stable will be stored again for our delight next year. THANK YOU to them for ALL the behind-the-scenes planning, preparing, setting-up, cleaning, decorating, watering and now the taking down. Hey, if anyone is interested in helping with Art & Environment? Give me a call. We can always use many more hands and hearts! THANKS TO ALL FOR EVERYTHING! And a SHOUT OUT to our Music Director, Angela Kovacs and her AMAZING time and talents in getting the musicians, choirs, instrumentalists, Worship Aids and everything READY for the Christmas Season. It was wonderful and PLEASE join them this afternoon at 3pm for the Hymn Festival to CONCLUDE the Season! And thanks for your generosity in the Sunday Collection! Peace in the New Year! Fr. John

We will set up a time and day for the Extraordinary Minister to visit that best fits your schedule. In your charity, please remember the repose of the soul of Otto Divis, Emily Gannon and Eleanor Giovanatto. Bible Study & Faith Sharing Bible study will resume its study of Kings with the story of Elijah. There will be familiar stories but also new thoughts for reflection. Bring your Bible and join us to see if the Lord might have a message for you. Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will resume on Tuesday at 12:30pm in the chapel. We will just do simple quiet prayer this week and let it be a time of thanks for the beauty of the holidays we just celebrated. This may be the perfect time to give yourself the opportunity to try this method of prayer.

"Who Am I To Judge" is an 8-part program that responds to relativism with nothing less than the Catholic moral worldview. Learn how true morality is rooted in love; how making a judgment is not judging a person s soul; and how relativism really is the spiritual poverty of our times. Through presentations and discussion we'll develop confidence in God s moral law, greater clarity in how to explain it effectively, and greater compassion for those with whom we disagree. Sessions will be held Wednesday evenings, 7:30pm to 8:30pm starting January 17th in the Garrity Center meeting room. Contact jmastandrea@stmaryberea.org for more info. Saturday, January 13 3:00pm - Church Confessions "That Man Is You" Resumes Sunday, January 14 12:30pm - FJG Mtg Rm Coffee, Tea & Thee Welcome - Newly Baptized Welcome this weekend the newly baptized - Joseph Robert Perea All men of St. Mary parish are invited to join our weekly sessions of "That Man Is You." Together we explore what Catholic male morality means in this modern world. Even if you haven't attended any of the first 13 sessions last fall you can still be part of this leadership development program. Sessions will be held Thursday evenings from 7:15 to 8:45 starting January 18 in the Garrity Center meeting room. Contact jmastandrea@stmaryberea.org for more info. Jesus in everyone Mother Teresa Our work... Calls for us to see Jesus in everyone. He has told us that He is the hungry one. He is the naked one. He is the thirsty one. He is the one without a home. He is the one who is suffering. These are our treasures.... They are Jesus. Each one is Jesus in His distressing disguise. Hungry for love, He looks at you; thirsty for kindness, He begs from you; naked for loyalty, He hopes in you; sick and in prison for friendship, He wants from you; homeless for shelter in your heart, He asks of you.. Will you be the one to Him? Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987) Collection for 12/31/17: $10,079.50 Thank you! The Solemnity of Mary was not a holy day of obligation, but many people came on Monday morning to give thanks to Mary's choice to say YES to God! This weekend we have the Epiphany of the Lord, when the three wise men (or kings, depending on how you translate the word 'magi'!) followed the star to find baby Jesus lying in the manger. We, too, have our own stars in our lives to guide us back to the faith, but we have to keep our eyes, minds, and hearts open to realize what it is! It's like that joke about the man who climbed to the rooftop during a flood, denying help from boats and helicopters because as he said, 'God will save me.' Well, in the story, he drowns, and in heaven he asks God why he was left for dead. God replies, 'I sent you two boats and a helicopter!' The star in your life might be something subtle, or it might be something that smacks you right in the face! (Of course, only figuratively, we hope!) God is out there, and he is ready for you to come home to him. Last week I had a misprint in my article. This year's Hymn festival is on Sunday, the 7th! You will of course hear this in my announcement today. I hope that all are able to attend, and that you have a fantastic time! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office number is 440.243.3877 ext 27.
