May, 2013 Mother s Day Sunday, May 12. Wesley Wings Newsletter Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church 4495 Sandy Plains Road ** Marietta, GA 30066 770-993-4919 ** FAX 678-990-3499 www.wesleychapelumc.com Pentecost Sunday May 19 Pentecost comes from the Greek word, simply meaning fiftieth. Pentecost Sunday will represent fifty days since Easter Sunday. It is a time for excitement and fresh commitments. There will be a Pentecost Celebration in the gym during the Sunday school hour. Remember to wear something RED in celebration. I love the hymn, How Firm a Foundation. It reminds us that the church and our faith are to be built on a solid foundation, the Word of God. And because that foundation is so strong, anything built upon it will not falter. Builders understand the principle need for a solid foundation yet, they also know a solid structure does not end with the foundation. For ages, the cornerstone has been a prominent element in construction. It was the first stone laid in a building and set the course for the rest of the stones. I believe our faith and the church should have prayer as its cornerstone. If we set all that we do in the spirit of prayer, we set the course for all the elements of our living. In his book, Pray the Price, Rev. Terry Teykl states the following about prayer. Through prayer, God is able to bless His people and their mission. Without it, spiritual awakening will never come. Jesus said, Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks the door will be opened. He adds, Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a stone instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? (Luke 11:9-13) Prayer is simply asking God to help us. In fact, James says, You do not have because you do not ask (James 4:2). No matter how many resources we own, or how much ability we feel we have, we must continually go before God and ask for His guidance and help. We need His blessing and heart in all that we do so that we avoid the pitfall of man-centered agendas. If we will ask Him to awaken our church, He will do it to make a name for His Son. I would encourage you to join me in 50 Days of Prayer to Invite the Holy Spirit. We will pray through 10 chapters of the book of Acts, a chapter a day. At the end of the 10 days we will repeat the guide. It is repeated five times making 50 days. All this is done at home. The guide is printed on a card and available upon request. We will begin on Sunday, May 12, 2013; Mother s Day. Then on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 6:30 in the evening, we will join together to share and lift special requests to the Lord in prayer. God will do great things if we ask! Will we join together as a church and ask for the Holy Spirit to work in our community and our lives? In Christ, Jimmy
