NOTE FROM The Pastor Dear Parishioners, Thanksgiving has come and gone. Think about all that you and I have been given in the spiritual life. We were placed into the true religion, either at birth or later. The good Lord has touched us such that we want to go to Mass each Sunday and receive the Bread of Life. He inspires us to live sacrificial lives in our families and careers. He empowers us to pray each day, which is a real charity. Some of us even go to daily Mass! Some of us are very devoted to the Rosary! As a result, we lead fulfilling Gospel lives in Christ and we have a robust, but reasonable confidence in our eternal destiny. All of this comes to us through the love of Jesus Christ. Others may see all that we do to practice our holy religion, others who do not share our faith or our love for Jesus, and they might wonder: Is it really necessary? Father Augustine Wetta speaks about the time early in his vocation as a monk in St. Louis. Randall, his roommate from college, left for California to become a movie star. He managed to secure a role on a major television soap opera. He was in movies and associated with the rich and famous. After Fr. Augustine professed his Solemn Vows, he went to visit Randall in New York. Randall had a party in honor of his monk mate. Fr. Augustine writes, All of his beautiful friends were there: models, producers, musicians and they were all beautiful. The loft was beautiful. Randall and his wife were beautiful. The hors d oeuvres were beautiful. Even the little toothpicks were beautiful. I was really taken with all this beauty, and having a serious vocation crisis all to myself, when this chic jewelry designer from Soho named Claudette leaned toward me over the coffee table and said, Why did you have to become a monk? Isn t it enough just to be a good person? Fr. Augustine continues, She couldn t have picked a worse time to ask. But, as sometimes happens, the Holy Spirit stepped in on my behalf. I slapped my beautiful hors d oeuvre down on the coffee table and said, No! No, it is not enough just to be a good person. That s the least you can do. That s the minimum. Think about it. What s the alternative? You re expected to be a good person. But God wants you and me to be saints to live lives of heroic virtue to give and give and give until it hurts! Then I stabbed myself with a toothpick and had to run to the bathroom. My point is that humility should never be confused with mediocrity. Perfect holiness is the purpose for which we were created, so we can t allow ourselves to be comfortable with the status quo. The minimum is not enough. (J. Augustine Wetta, Humility Rules: Saint Benedict's Twelve-Step Guide to Genuine Self-Esteem, 2017) There is much truth in what this monk is saying. You and I are so honored to be disciples of the risen Christ. There are so many other people He could have chosen instead of us, and these unchosen people would perhaps have done far better in the spiritual life than we have. Indeed, we have been given so much. Perhaps that should frighten us a bit. Everyone to whom much is given, of him much will be required. (Lk 12: 48). God Bless You! Fr. Eric

Sacred Heart 2017-2018: If you and your spouse are considering a Private/Catholic school for your children, Sacred Heart is the perfect choice. Sacred Heart School is a West Brighton fixture with a rich history of academic and athletic success. The school currently has an enrollment of 262 students all of whom are inspired and educated in the image of God. One hundred percent of our 8th grade graduates are accepted into their high school of choice. Many of our students are awarded high school scholarships, are accepted into advanced/specialized programs and our school has among the highest ELA and Math scores on Staten Island. We place emphasis on technology in the classrooms as our kindergarten eighth grade students have Chromebooks in the classroom. Homework assignments, upcoming events and school news are posted on our school website. Also our basketball, soccer, swimming and golf teams are not only competitive, they win! Sacred Heart also has a Junior National Honor Society as well as drama, art and chess clubs. In addition, we offer a free Pre-K and financial assistance is available to students from K-8th grade. If you are interested please contact the school at (718) 442-0347, private tours are available by appointment. Monsignor Farrell Christmas Fair: Monsignor Farrell High School located at 2900 Amboy Road will be having their annual Christmas Fair on Sunday, December 2nd from 10 AM-5 PM. There will be over 80 vendors, baked goods, raffles, an hourly door prize and a special visit from Santa. Admission is $3 per person and $5 for per family which includes one raffle and one door prize entry. ALTAR SERVER SCHEDULE Saturday, December 1, 2018: 5:00 M. Crowdell, T. Murphy, M. In fact, we are now (as of this writing) at $1,070,885 which represents 116% of our overall goal. We thank each and every parishioner who has given/pledged to our campaign and we encourage those who haven t to give what their means will allow. Remember if our campaign reaches 120% then every dollar donated stays with the parish. Saint Vincent de Paul Society: The Saint Vincent de Paul wishes to thank all of the parishioners who gave food for the Thanksgiving Baskets that they distributed to the poor and needy. A special thank you to the members of The Youth Group and Boy Scouts who held a food drive in order to assist us. Be assured your donations and efforts were appreciated. Thank You: We would also like to thank Rosemarie Bake Shoppe who so generously supplied the bread to be blessed and distributed to our parishioners at last week s Thanksgiving Mass. Their store is located at 155 Port Richmond Avenue right here on Staten Island. Seton Foundation for Learning: This weekend representatives from The Seton Foundation for Learning, a program for developmentally disabled children and young adults ages 3-21 years of age, will be selling raffle tickets for a chance to win $5,000 cash. The tickets are $10 each or three for $25. Please support this very worthy program. Sacred Heart Choir: The Adult Choir sings weekly at the 11 AM Mass on Sunday. Rehearsals take place at 10:30 AM in the choir loft. If any new members who can carry a tune wish to join they do so by simply showing up. Being a member of the choir is a great way to enhance your spiritual experience at Mass. Remember he who sings prays twice!
