Parish Picture Directories Available for Sale If you did not have your picture in the directory, and thus did not get a complimentary copy, you may purchase on at the front office for $10 (while supplies last). Dana and Paule e Wardwell are two of the most widely known and loved people in our parish! How did that happen? It happened because they are two of the most ac ve people in our parish, serving all of us. Whether it be as greeters, Extraordinary Ministers, Sacristans, volunteers for Parish Life events, or helpers with Funeral Luncheons (to men on some of their ac vi es), Dana and Paule e have been there and done that! Our recent Parish Picture Directory happened because Dana, with Paule e's help, stepped up to tackle the task. It involved many, many hours of scheduling, checking in people for photo sessions, taking photos of parish groups, and doing layout of the directory for prin ng. We owe them a huge debt of gra tude for making it happen. Dana and Paule e, we offer you a great big thanks for all you have done, and all we know you will do in the years to come! Has someone made a difference for you at our church? Someone you would like recognized? Please call or email Suzanne with the details. Help us recognize the stars among us! St. Barnabas prays for... Please sign up by le ng Simeon Willis know no later than ruary 15 th. Youth: The Future or Part of the Present? I o en hear that the youth are the future of our Church. While this is true in a limited sense, I think what young people need to hear more frequently is that they are part of the Church in the present: they are valued and needed now and not just at some future date. Catholic youth today have many ideas and are contagiously enthusias c about them. If we come to know them personally, they can shake us out of our normalcy and inspire us to act. Older adults have the wisdom and experience needed to help guide and encourage the youth in their enthusiasm, without which it is so easy for them to be discouraged and even give up. Please pray for the youth, and start forming rela onships with them. It may not be ask hard as you think once you start. They are in the same social hall a er Mass as you are... Thomas Awiapo ruary 13, 1:00 PM 2:30 PM Basilica of St. Lawrence 97 Haywood St., Asheville, NC 28801 A light lunch is provided. You are invited to a end Mass at 12:10 PM in the Basilica prior to the event. Thomas Awiapo tells a truly inspiring story of survival and success. Growing up in a small African village in Ghana, he was orphaned before the age of ten and le on his own to struggle for survival. He was the second of four brothers; his youngest two brothers died of malnutri on and lack of care. His search for food led him to a Catholic Church elementary school, where he studied and also received a snack and meal every day provided by CRS. Mr. Awiapo thanks CRS for saving his life and providing him with a future. He survived, studied, and eventually won scholarships to a end college. He later earned a master s degree from California State University. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION B y the early 1950s some scholars were calling for the restora on of Communion of the faithful on Good Friday, since by then only a priest received, consuming the host from the Holy Thursday repository. In 1955 the new Good Friday liturgy was med to begin at three o clock everywhere, and included the op on of Holy Communion, but without the Precious Blood that had originally been part of the liturgy. Today, there is increasing debate among theologians. Some feel that it would be be er to fast from the Eucharist on Good Friday, focusing on the mystery of the cross and highligh ng the Easter Communion. Others say that this Communion infuses the sadness of the day with awareness of Christ s victory. It is not a day of mourning, of course, and the Passion according to John grounds the liturgy in a sense of Christ s victory over death and the triumph of the cross. The tradi on is rich and varied, and we are s ll in the early stages of recovering an ancient way of doing things. Why do we call the day good? The English and Dutch languages share this name, and its origin stems from the name God s Friday. The tradi onal name for the day in La n is Feria VI in Parasceve, which translates as The Sixth Day of the Week of Prepara on. Other languages make do with Holy Friday. In another part of England, as in Denmark, the people used to call it Long Friday, a good descrip on for a quiet day without work and no chance for play or a good meal! James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ruary 12, 2017 What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love [God], this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:9 10 Why Not Now? Have you ever wished you had more me to think about the more important things in life? Why not make that me during this Lent? Why not join one of the small groups of 8 to 10 people in our parish who will meet once a week for six weeks star ng the week of Ash Wednesday? When we gather, we will read Scripture, pray, and share our faith. This experience will provide more than you can imagine; it could make this the most memorable Lent in your life. Sign ups begin the weekend of ruary 11 12 and con nue the weekend of ruary 18 19, 2017. Please stop by the Live Lent Table a er all the Masses. Members of the Educa on Commission will be there to answer ques ons and assist you with the sign up process.
