TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH May 21, 2013 Vol. 47 No. 21 You are invited to a GOING-AWAY CONCERT Wednesday, May 29 Sanctuary 6 pm Congratulations Graduates Class of 2013 On Sunday, May 19, Trinity s Class of 2013 was honored at the 8:45 AM service. They sat together at the service and then attended a Celebration Brunch with their families in the Fellowship Hall. Choir TOUR LONDON 2013 Cross & Flame Youth Choir Cross & Flame Handbell Choir Beat the heat with a Summer Study! Forgiveness Adam Hamilton shows readers how to receive the freedom that comes with forgiving even if the person needing to be forgiven is yourself. One author said that this study not only reminds you about the importance of reconnecting the broken pieces of your life but shows how the process of grace and forgiveness is possibly your most complete picture of God. (4-week course) 1 hour session Offered: Sunday at 10:00 AM Wednesday at 6:00 PM Thursday at 9:15 AM Esther... It s Tough Being a Woman! Beth Moore leads an in-depth and personal examination of this great story of threat and deliverance. If you have ever felt inadequate, threatened, or pushed into situations that seemed overpowering, this is the study for you. Beth peels back the layers of history and shows how very contemporary and applicable the story of Esther is to our lives. (9-week course) 2 hour session Offered: Wednesday at 6:00 PM Thursday at 9:15 AM Register Today! trinitybirmingham.com Deadline is June 8 Classes begin June 16 You may also register by contacting Amy Mezzell, 879-1737 amezzell@trinitybirmingham.com NURSERY PROVIDED! PERSONAL WORD SUNDAY, MAY 26, 2013 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary The 8:45 AM worship service is broadcast via 15-minute delay from 9-10 AM Sundays on WAPI-1070 AM & 100.5 FM SERMON Dr. Andrew Wolfe MUSIC 8:45 AM & 11:00 AM Sanctuary Choir, Lindsey Folsom MINISTER ON CALL Drew Holland, 617-9228 WESLEY HALL 11:15 AM Rev. Nathan Carden A LOOK AT MAY 19 1,146 Worship Attendance 754 Sunday School Attendance The Rest of the Story There is a new film out about Jackie Robinson, who integrated baseball by playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. But there is something missing from the film titled 42. In an article for Christian Century, Eric Metaxas points out that when he was recruited by manager, Branch Rickey, Rickey told him he would be viciously attacked. He was looking for someone who could resist the temptation to retaliate. Robinson agreed. What is missing from the movie is the motive. Rickey was a Bible-thumping Methodist who refused to attend games on Sunday. He believed that it was God s will that he integrate baseball and saw this as an opportunity to shape the moral history of our nation, much as Abraham Lincoln had done. Rickey chose Robinson, not just because he was a good player, but because of his own faith and moral character. Rickey knew he must find someone whose behavior on and off the field would be exemplary and who believed turning the other cheek was not just the practical thing to do but the right thing. In their historic meeting, to underscore the spiritual dimension of the undertaking, Rickey pulled out a book by Giovanni Papini, titled Life of Christ. He opened to the passage about the Sermon on the Mount and read it aloud. But the filmmakers of 42 were evidently uncomfortable with this part of the story and simply avoided it. In baseball terms, they pitched around it. They did much the same thing in the movie Amazing Grace (2007), about British abolitionist William Wilberforce. The story of his conversion and the huge role that faith played in his political efforts was essentially left out. It is, of course, popular these days to debunk religious faith and make it the source of all that is wrong (God Is Not Good). The truth is that if you read history, much if not most of what is good in our society has its roots in faith. It was people of faith who led the fight against slavery, child labor, and racial injustice. The first schools in America were founded by the church - the same with orphanages and hospitals. I remember Millard Fuller, the founder of Habitat for Humanity, saying that the Methodist Church was the largest single builder of Habitat Houses. There is the old Gospel hymn with the title I Love to Tell the Story If you are going to make a film about someone like Robinson or Wilberforce, let s tell the whole story. information for guests & new members Welcome to Trinity United Methodist Church!
