Dr. Cox- Dear MMS Students and Teachers, You may have noticed that everyone was encouraged to wear Red, White and Blue today. The reason is simple, but sometimes forgotten. Today is Sept. 11 th, a day that many of us will never forget. This is the day that we remember the several thousand Americans who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on our way of life. Highjackers took control of four airplanes, and had plans to crash them into American landmarks. One airliner hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York, and another one hit the South Tower. I had actually turned on the news after the first plane hit, and was watching live when the second plane hit the second tower. That image is burned into my memory forever. Both of those huge office buildings, holding several thousand Americans representing all races and religions, collapsed, killing most of the people inside, along with hundreds of New York Policemen and Firefighters. A third airliner crashed into the Pentagon. Our Texas Senator, the Honorable Brian Birdwell, was in the Pentagon when that plane crashed into it. He was rescued from the rubble, but to this day carries scars from this experience. The fourth plane was headed for the White House. President George W. Bush was at an elementary school at the time of the attacks, but his wife and family were in the White House. It had to be evacuated as a
precaution. However, something happened and that plane never made it to its intended destination. On board that fourth airliner was a young man named Todd Beamer; 32 years old, husband, father of two young boys, and his wife was expecting a daughter. Todd was able to call his wife after this plane was high-jacked and told her what was going on; that terrorists had taken over their plane and that he and some of the other passengers were planning on rushing the cockpit to take back control of the plane. Todd always had a saying that he used often in life. Whenever he and his wife were taking their two boys somewhere, he would say, Let s Roll to indicate that it was time for them to load up and head out. His family knew this saying of his and responded to it accordingly. The morning of Sept. 11, 2001 on United Airlines Flight 93, Todd had told his wife of their plan. The last thing she ever heard her husband say as he laid down the phone in the seat was Let s Roll! At that command, a group of passengers rushed the cockpit of the airplane. The black box recording indicates that there was a huge struggle inside the cockpit of that plane between the terrorist highjackers, and the passengers, led by Todd Beamer. The plane crashed into an empty field in Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board, just the same as the other three airplanes that were highjacked that morning. However, United Airlines Flight 93 never reached its intended target. The White House was saved. Four months later, Todd Beamer s wife gave birth to a beautiful little girl who never knew her daddy. When I think back on the events of that day, I think of the people that engineered those horrific attacks. In my mind, they represent everything that is wrong in our world. However, when I think of Todd
Beamer and his fellow passengers, I think of all the things that are right with our beloved country. You should know, I get exactly that same feeling every morning when I watch the boys and girls of Midway Middle School walk onto our campus. You represent all the things that are RIGHT about this great country. Beautiful boys and girls who come to school every morning with the expectation of working hard and learning as much as they can, led by our amazing teachers. YOU are the walking, talking living symbols of America. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow, so let s do the very best we can while we re here today; Every. Single. Day. Here s what I would like to ask of each of you this year. Every time you do anything to represent Midway Middle School, Let s Roll! When we play football: Let s Roll! When we play volleyball and basketball: Let s Roll! Golfers and Tennis Teams: Let s Roll! When we compete in Robotics: Let s Roll! Cheerleaders: Let s Roll! Teachers: Let s Roll! Band, Choir and Orchestra: Let s Roll! Track and Cross Country runners: Let s Roll! UIL Academics competitors: Let s Roll! When you take a Science Test, or a Math Test, or a History Test: Let s Roll!
When you see someone in the Military, or a Firefighter, or a Police Officer, you should tell them: Let s Roll! And then thank them for their service. If you see each other in the hallway, it s perfectly appropriate to say: Let s Roll! Take some time today to reflect on how blessed we are to live right here, at this time, in this place. Give each other a hug, a high five, or a fist bump. And remember 9-11-2001 for all the right reasons. Thank you for listening. Thank you for remembering. Just know this: I m proud of all of you, I m honored to serve as your Principal, and I love y all! And always remember: It s a great day to be a Panther! K-That s all we have for today! Have a great weekend!
