November 25, 2018 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS DN 7: 12-14; PS 93: 1-2, 5; REV 1: 5-8; JN 18: 33B-37 On this last day of Ordinary Time for the liturgical year, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. This feast was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925, at a time when the world was experiencing a rise of secularism, materialism and individualism, and an increasing denial of Christ s existence and authority. The hope was that the establishment of this feast would accomplish three goals that nations would see that the Church has the right to freedom, that leaders and nations would see that they are required to give respect to Christ, the King of kings, and that the faithful would be strengthened and encouraged by the reminder that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills and bodies. This feast is needed more than ever for all people and for us especially, as Christian stewards. It reminds us of three vital truths. First, even when it seems the world is spinning out of control, we need not fear because we have a King of kings who is very much in charge and who is loving, merciful and just. Second, if Christ is king of all, then He is also king of me, personally. I am not lord of my time, talents, and treasure. He is. I am a servant of the King and a steward of His gifts to me. Third, as His disciple, I am called to imitate my King. Christ s kingship is characterized by humble service, by emptying Himself for the good of others, The Scriptures tell us He went about doing good and He says of Himself, I came not to be served but to serve. How can I live in any other way than as a humble servant like my King? FAREWELL MESSAGE FROM DCN ANDY To the wonderful people of Saint Gabriel the Archangel parish; Two years ago, when I gave my first homily as a newly ordained deacon, I told you how proud I was to serve you in your journey of faith. Today as I say good bye, those words still ring true, I am truly humbled to have come to know such a wonderful group of people who are truly committed to serving Christ. As Christ changes us every time we encounter him, your presence over the last 14 years I have been at Saint Gabriel s has shaped and molded me as a child of Christ. I am very grateful for all the prayers, love and support I had through six years of the diaconate, your presence enabled me to never waive on that journey. And the last two years serving as your deacon has been the most rewarding experience of my life. To all of you, your efforts and contributions to the parish have been astounding, never stop. CHRIST THE KING Pope Pius XI instituted The Feast of Christ the King in 1925, to be celebrated throughout the universal church, in his encyclical Quas Primas. He connected the increasing denial of Christ as king to the rise of secularism throughout much of Europe. At the time of Quas Primas, many Christians (including Catholics) began to doubt Christ's authority and existence, as well as the Church's power to continue Christ's authority. Pius XI, and the rest of the Christian world, witnessed the rise of non-christian (or nominally Christian) dictatorships throughout Europe, and saw Catholics being persuaded by these earthly leaders. These dictators also often attempted to assert authority over the Church. Just as the Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted when devotion to the Eucharist was at a low point, the Feast of Christ the King was instituted during a time when respect for Christ and the Church was waning, when the feast was needed most. Christ the King day used to be celebrated on the last day of October, but since the calendar reforms of 1969, the feast falls on the last day of Ordinary Time, which is the day before Advent. It is fitting that the feast celebrating Christ's kingship is observed right before Advent, when we liturgically wait for the promised Messiah (King).
