CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH LOST. FOUND. FORMED. FOR SERVICE. ALL SAINTS SUNDAY November 20, 2016 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m. 1 Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! -Psalm 98:1a AS WE GATHER As you look around at fellow worshipers today, you might notice the many families from which we come. Some families are serious, some quirky, some similar to us, some very different from us. As we recognize All Saints Day, however, we also celebrate that, as believers in Christ, we are members of the same family, the most special of families. Through water and the Word, each one of us was made a part of this family at Baptism. As today s Epistle puts it, See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are (1 John 3:1). As we look at those around us, we remember we are brothers and sisters in Christ. We also give thanks for those members of the family of God whom we cannot see with our own eyes, those who have died in Christ. We recognize the ways in which the Lord worked through them, and we look forward to the happiest of family reunions at our Father s house in heaven! means to be seated means to stand, unless repeated standing is difficult [P: Pastor] [C: Congregation] RINGING OF THE BELLS CALL TO WORSHIP (11:00) CHOIR Here I Am Lord music by Daniel L Schutte, arrangement by Larry Mayfield

2 OPENING HYMN #678 We Sing for All the Unsung Saints + DIVINE SERVICE SETTING FIVE + INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father, C: who created us. P: In the name of the Son, C: who redeemed us. P: In the name of the Holy Spirit, C: who sanctifies and keeps us in the one true faith. All: Amen. OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 149:1 2 P: Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, C: His praise in the assembly of the godly! P: Let Israel be glad in his Maker; C: let the children of Zion rejoice in their King! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION 1 John 3:1 3 P: In today s Epistle, John writes, See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. Yet, we do not live our lives as if we are children of God. C: Father in heaven, forgive us for not always living in ways that honor Your name, which we bear as Your baptized children. You lavishly love us, but we have not shown love for You or for our neighbor. Because we are by nature sinful and unclean, we set our minds only on the things of this world and not on the world to come. Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

P: Beloved, we are God s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when He appears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure (1 John 3:2 3). As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. 3 HYMN OF PRAISE Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee LSB 803 sts. 1,3 PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray together. ALL: Almighty and everlasting God, You knit together Your faithful people of all times and places into one holy communion, the mystical Body of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Grant us so to follow Your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that, together with them, we may come to the unspeakable joys You have prepared for those who love You, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 4 OLD TESTAMENT READING Revelation 7:9 17 (The saints praising the Lamb before His throne) R: The Old Testament reading is from Revelation, chapter seven (After the reading ) R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE 1 John 3:1 3 (The Father s love for us) R: The Epistle reading is 1 John, chapter three. (After the reading ) R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! VERSE Hebrews 12:1a, 2a ALL: Alleluia. Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. Alleluia.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 5:1 12 (The Beatitudes) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. After the reading: 5 P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. CATECHISM INSTRUCTION The Lord s Prayer P: The Third Petition All: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. P: What does this mean? All: The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also. P: How is God s will done? ALL: God s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God s name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will. We invite the children forward as we sing: : LSB #725, v. 1 Children of the heav nly Father Safely in His bosom gather; Nestling bird nor star in heaven Such a refuge e er was given. SERMON Text: 1 John 3:1-3 Title: Escaping Neverland 6 TITHES, PLEDGES, AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY (8:00) CHOIR Here I Am Lord music by Daniel L Schutte, arrangement by Larry Mayfield PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: As those who have been made saints by God s grace through faith in Christ Jesus, let us come before our Father in heaven in prayer. Blessed are the poor in spirit. Lord God, we recognize that we are spiritually poor and morally bankrupt. Grant us forgiveness for the sake of Jesus. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; C: You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. P: Blessed are those who mourn. Lord God, we mourn our sin, but we also mourn the wages that sin brings death. Give us the comfort that Jesus gives, which will be fully realized in heaven. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; C: You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. P: Blessed are the meek. Lord God, in humbleness, we come before You, casting off our pride and arrogance. Bless us with the hope of the new heavens and earth on the Last Day when we are resurrected. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; C: You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

P: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Lord God, we desire to be right in Your eyes, and we thank You for Your forgiveness. Do not cast us aside, but satisfy us with Your salvation. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; C: You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. P: Blessed are the merciful. Lord God, having been shown mercy by You, we are merciful to others. Work in us appreciation for Your mercy and grace. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; C: You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. P: Blessed are the pure in heart. Lord God, continue to preserve us from having hearts that follow after anyone but You. Give us purity of heart so our eyes may be fixed on You alone. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; C: You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. Pastor: Blessed are the peacemakers. Lord God, use us to be agents of peace in a world conflicted by sin as we bear witness to the Prince of Peace. Especially bless the peacemaking efforts of those in civil authority. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; C: You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. P: Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake. Lord God, watch over us when we are persecuted for following You. Grant us and to all Christians steadfastness of faith. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; C: You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. [Special petitions may follow.] P: O Lord, into Your hands we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy. C: Amen. 7

+ SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT + PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. [Colossians 3:1] C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. [Psalm 136] C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE P: It is truly good, right, and salutary evermore praising You and singing: SANCTUS 8 WORDS OF OUR LORD PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup. We proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

THE LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. AGNUS DEI 9

COMMUNION INVITATION The Lord's Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as He says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes. Because those who eat and drink our Lord's body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, are unclear on what all this means, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the Sacrament, are encouraged to seek guidance from the pastor. HOMES FOR HAITI: This year, we will be adjusting our first midweek Advent pre-service soup and sandwich supper, replacing it with a special meal to help raise awareness and funds for our housing project in Haiti. On November 30, we will have a special family style meal and will take up a free will offering to help fund these homes before the year is out. Please invite anyone and everyone you know to join us in supporting our friends in need.

15 HELP FOR HAITI: Brothers and sisters, hurricane Matthew went right over the village we have helped support through Food for the Poor s Lutheran Coalition. Now more than ever they need the new homes we have committed to build in the coming year. If you d like to help our friends in Haiti, this may be the most worthy recipient of your gifts. If you plan to help, please consider directing them to the Lutheran Coalition. FOOD FOR THE POOR LUTHERAN COALITION: Don t forget! We continue to collect funds to help serve the poorest of the poor. $2 per week from all our member families would mean $10,000 to help alleviate their tremendous suffering. HEAD START COLLECTION Donations of hats/gloves through December 5. Pre-school children, ages 2-5 years old. NO ADULT sizes. We are planning an exciting new fundraiser to benefit Open Arms CCDC and need your help! The event is a Parent's Night Out, where parents can pay a fee to leave their children (ages 1 through 10) at the Church for an evening of holiday themed activities while the adults get to go out and have some time to themselves. In order to make this a success, we will need adults and high school aged youth to volunteer to assist with child care. We will have a few crafts and activities for the children to participate in, will have snacks and pizza, and will show a holiday movie. The event will take place on Saturday, December 10th. Volunteers will be needed from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The event itself will run from 4:00 to 7:00 but there will be some set-up and clean-up required. Volunteers may sign up to help either the whole time or for a partial shift. If you are interested in helping out, please see the sign-up sheet in the Lobby. Thank you, Open Arms CCDC Board of Directors

Micah s Backpack Thank you to all who responded to the request for the vegetables, crackers, and all other contributions for Micah s Backpack. Your generosity is overwhelming and very much appreciated. Please continue to think of these children as you feed your own children and grandchildren each week. Thank you for supporting this outreach ministry! Call for instrumentalists! Concordia would love to have instrumentalists add to our holiday celebrations, accompany the choir or add to our services on special occasions, and as we prepare to begin a third worship service etc. If you think you'd like to serve the Lord in this way, please contact Pastor Emil or Kathy Schleef at 717-401- 0474/ksschleef@prodigy.net. Eagerly anticipating your calls! Come Join Us - We need some people who like to sing and play their guitars or other instruments, to come and join us in the Outreach Center as we sing some uplifting hymns and other spiritual music. We are planning to get together at Concordia on Friday nights at 7:00 pm for fun and fellowship. Dates will be announced. Questions or for information---- contact Tom O'Farrell or Fred Tichnell. Church Library News: The Church library has a link on Concordia's Church Website (Our Library) and now under that link has the main library catalogue divided under four headings; PreK-Kindergarten, Children/Youth, Adult Fiction and Adult Non Fiction.
