A monthly newsletter for members and friends of First Baptist Church of Painesville - November 2016 Church Link A Message from Pastor Ed Thank you, Lord, for Saving My Soul This is sort of a follow-up to my sermon on October 23 rd that was based on Colossians 3 and my favorite hymn, "All That Thrills My Soul Is Jesus" (hymn 511 in our pew hymnals). But here we are in November and that makes us think about being thankful. The October 22 nd devotional in Ray Stedman's The Power of His Presence is about Psalm 50:14 and is titled, "The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving." That gave me an early start on thinking about being thankful. Then a chorus started running through my mind that we used to sing in BYF meetings and in church 60 years ago (yes, I know that I am old). I started singing it to myself. "Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul. Thank you, Lord, for making me whole." Just like with the October 23rd sermon and much of my life, my curiosity got the best of me and I started digging for information about the song and the songwriters. Seth Sykes and his wife Bessie wrote the lyrics and the music. In 1929 Seth, who was a tram conductor in Scotland, resigned and both he and his wife traveled to mission churches singing and preaching the gospel. They held meetings all over Great Britain until Seth's death in 1950. The song was written in 1940. The most surprising fact about the song is that IT ACTUALLY IS A WHOLE SONG. It has three verses to it. It must be that only the chorus caught on because that is what is in the pew hymnal on page 513 and that is all I remember singing. But below is the hymn with all three verses. I also found the music for the complete hymn in Great Hymns of the Faith compiled and edited by John W. Peterson and published in 1968. (Continued on next page.)

(Continued from 1st page.) Some thank the Lord for friends and home For mercies sure and sweet But I would praise Him for his grace In prayer I would repeat Chorus: Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul Thank you, Lord, for making me whole Thank you, Lord, for giving to me Thy great salvation so rich and free Some thank Him for the flowers that grow Some for the stars that shine My heart is filled with joy and praise Because I know He s mine I trust in Him from day to day I prove His saving grace I ll sing this song of praise to Him Until I see His face Listen, yes we are to thank our Lord for everything--friends, home, flowers, stars, etc.; but the greatest thank you to our Lord should be for saving our souls. Reader, are you saved? Can you sing, "Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul"? My prayer is that you are saved and that this little column will help all of us get a running start on being thankful people in November and every single day of our lives. Psalm 28:7 reads, "The LORD is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving." May your heart burst out in a song of thanksgiving today for your salvation! Saturday, November 5, 6:00 p.m. FBCP Movie Night God s Not Dead MARK YOUR CALENDAR AND PLAN TO COME!

A big THANK YOU for all your donations of money and food for the pantry! In October 5 families were helped through our food pantry ministry. Please continue to help us keep the following food items on our shelves so we may be able to help the needy in our community: applesauce, canned fruit, vegetables, tuna, soups and baked beans, cereal, pancake mix and syrup, spaghetti sauce, macaroni & cheese, boxed potatoes, Hamburger or Tuna Helper, Miracle Whip, 100 % fruit juices, and Jell-o. Monetary gifts will be gratefully appreciated, as well. We are also in need of grocery bags. Please bring in your extras. Thank you! Hosanna Circle It was good to return to our usual night and time for circle, Oct. 3, 2016. Despite illness or other obligations by some, seven sisters gathered for singing, praying and planning. Thank you notes were read from Hope Chest and Project Hope in appreciation for clothing and meals we provided. Our next Project Hope obligation is Thursday, December 29 to provide dinner for 40 folks. At the end of September, Wendy, Mary Anne and Jacquie attended the ABWM Fall Rally in Jefferson. Those present enjoyed the lunch they provided. We were impressed with the speaker, Elizabeth Lovejoy, who will return to Honduras to serve in the mission field. A love gift of $200 was given to her. We heard about our 2016-2017 financial obligations. Wendy had attended the Lake County Community Network meeting to hear of funds they are in need of especially during November and December. Sisters are encouraged to bring a canned good to the next meeting for our pantry. Jacquie presented an introduction of the 2016-2017 ABWM theme - SEE Our next meeting is to be Monday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the church. If you would like to join us or need information, please contact Jacquie Wolf. We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first line of defense. We pray when there's nothing else we can do, but God wants us to pray before we do anything at all. J. Oswald Chambers

Volunteers STILL Needed We thank all who have volunteered in any way in maintaining the church grounds and building, and also those who are faithful in helping with Sunday morning services. We are in need of volunteers to help the church move forward. If you would like to get involved in the Lord s work serving as a volunteer, please see the list of jobs and sign-up sheet which is located on the bulletin board in the foyer. Thank you! Help First Baptist by purchasing Giant Eagle Gift Cards See Sandy in the office during the week if you are interested. Also...please remember to place your paper in the green and yellow PaperRetriever recycling bin on the east side of the building.
