LUKE 2:22 Do we give the Lord the first fruits of our time every week by attending Mass? Do we set an example for our children and grandchildren by attending Mass and joyously participating in the celebration of Mass each week? How do we know what God wants us to do unless we communicate with Him? ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL This year s theme of the Archbishop s Annual Appeal is When I called, You Answered. It is a perfect opportunity to reflect on God s generosity and serves to instill in us all a heart and spirit of gratitude to remind us that God will always be there. Thousands of people in the four counties served by the Archdiocese of Newark are assisted each year by the AAA and our parish also benefits by receiving a rebate from the appeal if it exceeds its goal. Because of your generosity last year, Saint Joseph Parish did just that. We received over $3,000 from the campaign. Please consider making as generous a pledge as you are able. Thank you for your support for those in need throughout the Archdiocese and for Saint Joseph Parish as well! BLESSING OF THROATS The Blessing of Throats, in honor of the feast of Saint Blaise, will also take place on Monday, February 3 after the 7:00 and 8:00 am Masses. Our bulletins can also be viewed on our website sjcnj.org

PRESENTATION OF THE LORD, FEBRUARY 2, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK I hope your enjoyment of the Super Bowl won t be diminished by a story about a player from a detested rival of the Giants who led his team to two victories in the big game. (I got it from an article by Wally Carew in Columbia, the magazine of the Knights of Columbus.) Roger Staubach, Hall-of-Fame quarterback for the Cowboys, got a late start in pro football because he had to finish a four-year military obligation after winning the Heisman Trophy at the Naval Academy. His football exploits speak for themselves; but more importantly, Staubach excelled at living a Catholic life. Father Joseph Ryan, former Catholic chaplain at Annapolis, never forgot meeting him for the first time: He hadn t even been sworn in yet. I was introduced to seven young men. The last one was Roger. The others shook my hand and made polite remarks. Roger immediately asked me what time I was saying Mass the next morning. Daily Mass was at 5:30 am. And Father Ryan recalled that, despite the new students hectic schedule, Roger was the first plebe to attend daily Mass. He served as my altar boy regularly. Others followed him, and after a short time, there were more than 100 midshipmen at daily Mass. Roger Staubach has lived his Catholic religion as deeply as he has believed it: with, as he says, childlike faith and trust in God. He once posed this challenge: (continued above) Most of us just don t work as hard at our Spiritual goals, at developing a relationship with Christ, as we do at other things. If Christ tapped me on the shoulder today, would I change? Would my life be different? After the severe weather we have been experiencing, with all the painful freezing and the dangerous and bothersome commutes, we can hardly be blamed for decrying winter. But maybe we can see it a bit differently upon considering these words from William Cooper, an 18thcentury Boston minister: We should be patient under the cold, since tis God s cold. When our bodies are pinched by it at any time, and our hands are sealed up, in its disabling us for our work and business; or we are put to extraordinary expense to guard ourselves against It; let us bear these and such inconveniences arising from the cold without murmuring or fretting. Let us learn our obligation to thankfulness; for warm houses, clothes, and beds; for comfortable food and fuel, to relieve us against the rigor of the cold! We should likewise be thankful to God who has carried us thus far through the difficulties of the present hard winter and through all the winters of the years of our lives. Msgr. David Hubba The Sacrament of Baptism was celebrated at Saint Joseph Church on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at our 10:30 am Mass. May God bless the children baptized and their families. Church: sjcnj.org SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ School: sjsusa.org HUMAN TRAFFICKING An estimated 21 million people, including children as young as age five, are trafficked for commercial sex or forced labor across our world today. Large sporting events, such as the Super Bowl, are known to provide a lucrative market for human traffickers. Over 80 people, including a number from Saint Joseph, heard the panel which included the Chief of Police in River Edge, two officers of Covenant House International, and our own parishioner Maryanne Olsen of New Hope for Children as they raised awareness about this third largest criminal enterprise in the world. WHAT YOU CAN DO: In addition to your prayers (see below), please stay alert and report any suspicious activity to local police or call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 1-888-373-7888.
