The plan was o keep he honky onks and he ho dog sands from jus springing up all around he place and ruining several areas for good, clean residenial developmen. We have now inauguraed he universiy zoning and have sared releasing building permis in cerain areas around i; bu hey mus comply wih he overall plan adoped from he Planning Deparmen. This will keep a free, open area around he universiy where here can be some real nice aparmens and some very nice homes. No necessarily big -and expensive... jus nice. And i can " never close in on he universiy like " i has done in some ciies and jus lierally srangle i. I's impossible under his ype of zoning. few Resaurans To Be Near FTU This is he second par of an ineroiew wih Commissioner Paul Picke, Chairman of he Orange Couny Board of Couny Commissioners. FuTUre-In zoning he properies along Alafaya Trail down o Florida Tech i seems ha on he surface mos of he parcels along here are classified for eiher housing or aparmens. Have any of hem been se aside in he zoning regulaions for commercial aciviy? PICKETT - When he land was acceped by he Board of Regens for FTU we froze he zoning all around he universiy o ry o sop wha happened in Gainsville, where you could have a row of ho dog sands if you waned o, righ nex o he school. Afer freezing he zoning here we go ogeher wih Seminole Couny officials and devised a brand new zoning classificaion called UR-Universiy Residenial. This was pu ino effec for one-half mile in every direcion from campus. Then he Planning Deparmen drew up a complee se of plans showing how much privae housing we would need around he universiy, how much aparmen housing, and also small areas of ligh commercial. We know we need he small resaurans and he lile convenience sores, so hese areas were all drawn off on a map while he zoning was compleely frozen. The area was Few Resaurans FuTUre-Bu his plan does include resaurans and sores? PICKETT-The plan does include a few areas of ligh commercial where you can have your resaurans and he so-called ho dog sands I've referred o, and your lile convenience sores. All of his sor of hing is incuded as long as i's clean and no noisy. FuTUre-Are hese wihin walking disance from he school or (Coninued on Nex Page) office. Aferwards he 8-year-old queen will reurn o he Village Cener main desk area where, from 3: 30 o 4: 5 p.m. she will informally alk wih sudens. Miss Ford plans o reurn o he Universiy of Illinois as a sophomore afer her reign as Miss America. In addiion o being he Junior Naional Women's Trampoline Champion, she enjoys swimming and diving. To Poll Dorms A survey of all dorm sudens will be aken afer dinner his Tuesday nigh. The survey will be conduced by members of he newly formed Broadcas Club o find ou wha ype of muisc and a wha imes he sudens would like o have WFTU, which should be on he air by nex quarer, broadcas. The members of he survey eam will go o each dorm suie and poll he residens who are home. There will also be audiions for poenial announcers for he radio saion in room 2 in he LLRB beween 4 and 5 p.m. Monday, I appears everyone reads he FuTUre as evidenced by his sho of he recen le~islaors meeing. Feb. 24, and beween 7 and 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26. Inerviewers should bring a reel of ape wih hem if possible according o Gary Gaines, presiden of he club. SG Elecion Meeing Held Sudens planning o run for a Suden Governmen office will aend a suden assembly Tuesday, February 25 a a.m. in he Science Audiorium. Peiions for office will be available a he meeing. Sudens who are ineresed in working a he polls and serving as elecion officials are also asked o aend he meeing. The suden assembly is pending raificaion of he proposed consiuion. Baker Takes Dayona 500 Afer he flames and wreckage of he five races of speed week a Dayona Inernaional Speedway were cleared away, Buddy Baker was found solidly in pole posiion for he Dayona 500, o be run Sunday, February 23. Baker hopes o drive his Dodge Charger o firs place and he op prize from he $204,50 purse, while a large field of well known sock car drivers will probably op an average speed of 60 miles per hour rying o ou duel him. During speed week qualificaions, unofficial speeds of up o 90 miles per hour were clocked over he wo and a half mile course.

February 2, 969 Page2 Ediorial Fras Frown on Consiuion There are some movemens afoo by several fras on campus o sop he proposed S.G. consiuion from being voed in. From wha.he FuTUre could find ou here seems o be one major complain agams he consiuion, ha is many people feel ha he S.G. should no have he power o "Gran or wihhold approval of any suden c_iub or organizaion seeking official recogniion." (Aricle II, Secion 6, Paragraph B).. In he firs place.)wihou being derogaory o S.G:Jhe ~ons~iuion doesn' say much a all. I ouches lighly a fe~.maor poms i.n e~ch aricle and hen skips o he nex. However, his is how a consiuion of his naure mus be srucured. If here were specifics in he consiuion i would never be able o please mos people. Therefore i mus be made of generaliies so ha i can be voed in by he sudens so S. G. can begin o funcion. Then.; afer i is voed in; i mus be amended and revised. According o he proposed consiuion i can be amended by a 2/ 3 senae voe or a wrien peiion presened o a senaor bearing siganures of a leas 25 per cen of he suden body. (Around 400 names presenly). Also remember you as a suden body member will be elecing your senaors. These people wan o know wha you wan. Bend heir ears off if necessary and if hey aren' your voice don' voe for hem again. Bu geing back o he quesion, someone has o have he power o decide if clubs can be officially recognized or else here would be uer chaos on campus. Subersive organizaions wihou any real purpose 'excep o creae rouble would be numerous. I can well be imagined he problems ha arise if clubs did no have o be officially recognized by someone. And he logical choice is fellow sudens, which is supposed o be wha S.G. is o be made up of. Aricle II Secion 6, by he way, is he powers and duies of he suden senae which will be made up of around 50 sudens a leas one of which will be from each class in each college. So he chances are ha every suden knows a leas one senaor. Wih a governing body like his here is no chance of one or wo people sopping any organizaion from being acceped. Even he presiden's veo can be overridden wih jus a 2/3 senae voe. So he only organizaions who would need o fear no being recognized are he clubs which would no mee he Universiy sandards which would only mean rouble for hose meeing hem. REMEMBER!! as he consiuion sands now he only conrol he S.G. could exercise is he graning or removing of approval as recognized organizaions. If you don' wan S.G. o have any more power han his see o i ha your senaor knows wha you wan and he can make an amendmen saing jus wha you wan, and if he sudens are wih your idea i will be passed. We urge a "yes" voe from he suden body bu we also urge he individual sudens o paricipae in S.G. o make i work. Run for an office or help on a campaign. This is our Suden Governmen. If i flops we only prove ha we can' even conrol ourselves. If a represenaive governmen doesn' know wha he sudens wan hen we, as sudens mus no know. Voice your opinion. I is your only chance, don' blow i. Inerview Con. (from page ) are hey prey far away from he campus? PICKETT-I don' have he plan in fron of me bu as I recall here is no commercial of any kind wihin,250 fee, or approximaely one half mile, from he campus. FuTUre-Anoher quesion ha has come up in recen weeks has been he problem of adequae fire proecion for FTU. Exacly wha is he couny's sand on his siuaion? PICKETT-Unforunaely he couny does no, and canno under he law, have much of a sand; we can work wih he various groups involved and ry o work he hing ou. The Union Park Fire Conrol Disric is a separae, legal eniy se up wih a charer jus abou like a ciy. And, par of he campus is wihin he boundries of he Union Park Fire Conrol Disric. Now hey mus by law serve anyhing wihin heir disric, and hey will THE WIZARD OF ID by Bran parker and Johnny har T-4~N/ HoW [::\? However, his wrier canno and will no accep he implicaion of wholesomeness being sickening. In your February 7 review of "Mulberry Bush" you saed, "Cerainly he movie is a radical deparure from he sickening wholesomeness of "My Three Sons." Surely he war in Vie Nam, he rios, he spread of violence and crime, and he moral decay of an apaheic American public are much more sickening han a wholesome family elevision program. If scenes wih "sinful overones o he une of" are hey acually doing i? are used only "o milk a comic effec," are no he people who pay o see such comedy sicker han he wholesomeness of "My Three So"'""? How Cd.. he unwholesomeness of peoples' houghs be separaed from he undeniable wickedness of many of heir acions? Mus hese unwholesome houghs be nuured by he moion picure indusry? February 2, 969 FuTU.r e FTU Exhibi On Movies 'Belle dejour' To Be a Fair Is a Challenge By ROBERT E. HOLSINGER "Belle dejour" is an exciing new moion picure experience; i is a challange. The subjec maer could be considered depressing, bu he reamen of he whole fanasy is -rich enough o make he film's commen more poen han he climax/resolvemen of he convenional moion picure. Caherine Deneuve plays Severine Serizy, a young, sexually naive girl who has been married o a medical suden (Jean Sorel) for a year. The seemingly well-o-do beauy is frigid. A conversaion wih a middle aged philanderer supplies he vial deails abou an exising house of prosiuion. Relucanly, eiher hrough curiosiy or wha migh be described as a form of herapy, she becomes a member of he broher's saff. Her hours are wo o five, hus she adops he name "Belle dejour." A his poin he film could have srayed o a course in abnormal psych, by way of responses o cliens number one, wo, hree and so on; his is minimized. A gangser, Marcel (Pierre Climeni) eners (His clohes would make he cas on 25h Sree call he "man" for mercy). Where he comes from, i is hard o say... he gives he picure a sho in he arm. Belle and he fall in love. Marcel finds ou abou Belle's husband. Things deviae a lile from wha would be he ordinary course. As I have said he picure is a fanasy. The viewer is supplied wih many moivaional hins via Severine's inricaely consruced subconscious sexual obsessions. The eroic manifesaions are vivid; hey come wihou warning. Direcor Bunel ses aside he sandardized cinemagraphic devices of inerprospecion (here are no surrealisic flash-backs like one migh have seen in "Poin Blank", slow moion, fuzziness, and so on. As he viewer acceps hese in a one o one relaionship ha consummaes Belle's acions, he ges he feeling of incompleeness. One migh hink ha here are no clear-cu disincions beween wha is real and wha is imaginary. If his is ruely he case, he whole film migh be he husband's fanasy. In oal, he film does seem o lean more heavily oward a neo-fruedian masculine fanasy. In any case, we find ourselves rying o consruc he exernal (or real) from he inernal (or imaginary). "Belle dejour" iniially migh leave you siing in amazemen. I overshadows he usual Prosaic saemen of characer and plo. The visual paradox vaguely relaes o a line by Henry James from he "Auhor of Belraffio". "Poor lile Dolcino was rrore exquisiely beauiful in deah \han he had been in life." The picure is ruely cinemaic ar, working in all direcions. I is simply an amorous moion picure. FTU will again have an exhibi a he Cenral Florida Fair in he Main Exhibiion Hall from February 24 hrough March 8. The Public Informaion Deparmen is in need of sudens or organizaions o man he school's board. Sudens are needed o work a he exhibi from 3 pm o 9 pm on all fair days excep Sunday. Sudens and orgnizaions ineresed in devoing wo or more hours of heir ime are asked o conac Wanda Russell in he Village Cener (275-262) o sign-up. Tickes o he Fair will be given o all voluneers. Survey Response Apaheic A decision by apahy was handed down by he sudens of FTU las week as only 25 Spring Formal survey forms were compleed and urned in a special boxes provided by he Village Cener Suden Aciviies. Whie, a shingled pah Climbs among dused olives To where a he hill-cres Sares houses, whier Than eiher dus or shingle. The view, held from his vanage Unsofened by disance, because Scoured by a full ligh, Draws lucid across is deph The willing eye: a beach, A surf-line, broken Where reefs mee i, ino he heaving Blanched rims of bay-arcs; Above, piercing he empy blue, A gull would convey whieness Through he sole space which lacks i Bu, here, scanning he shore, Hangs only he eagle, deph Measured wihin is level gaze. "Whie" is he poem's main symbol of he Jewish religion. I runs hroughou he poem. The Jews' grea exodus is presen in he "shingled pah." The dused olives are no olives a all... hey are kosher dills. By now we realize a foreshadowing of more religious symbols ha will follow. And we percepively discover ha his is a poem wih a definie religious mood. The "hill-cres" is a very elusive symbol. So you see, any poem can have any meaning you wan. You jus have o decide which meaning will help you he mos. In his case, one more hing migh be necessary in your Jewish professor's personaliy... a good sense of humor, or aheisic endencies. This is Porable, he Prophe. Peace. Weekends 3;00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. Help one migh hink ha i sands for he prominen nose many Jewish people have. Bu an in deph inerpreaion reveals ha he hill-cres symbolizes a hill, probably Moun Sinai. The "houses, whier han eiher dus or shingle" are easily recognized as synagogues. "Unsofened by disance" seems o hold lile significance a firs glance, bu on a closer look we place emphasis on he word "unsofened" and we come up wih anoher religious symbol, unleavened bread. The Jewish candlabra used in he holidays shows up in he line, "scoured by a full ligh". The reference o a "willing eye" is simply a clever play on he Jewish expression, "oy". The poem is no wihou symbols of he 967 Israeli-Arab war. The lines from "a beach" hrough "rims of bay-acrs" are illusraive of he Gulf of Aqaba and he Israeli figh over i. Thus, a major heme of he pluck and deerminaion of he Jewish people is inroduced, bu i soon becomes a minor heme because no more is said abou i. Now we ge down o he real core of "Icos". The gull ha would fill up he empy blue sky is a symbol of he Jewish people as a whole. The "space which lacks i (he gull)" is obviously he world. Symbolizing geniles is he eagle which is presen in he sky. By relaing hese hree symbols ogeher in a workable paern we find ha he poem's real message is ha he Jewish people should be VISIT OUR COSMETIC DEPARTMENT and DRIVING RANGE Sm baske Page 3 Send For FREE Applicaion And Informaion.
