The Messenger Christ the King Catholic Community A Roman Catholic Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas NV; 89118 www.ctklv.org ~ (702) 871-1904 ~ Fax: (702) 251-4935 December 16, 2012 ~ Third Sunday of Advent Today s Readings First Reading Your God will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals (Zephaniah 3:14-18a). Psalm Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel (Isaiah 12:6). Second Reading Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! (Philippians 4:4-7). Gospel Whoever who has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. Whoever who has food should do likewise (Luke 3:10-18). MASS TIMES SATURDAY: 4:00 pm SUNDAY: 7:30, 9:30, 11:30am, 5:00 pm & 7:00 pm (Misa en Español) WEEKDAYS: Mon - Sat ~ 8:00 am HOLY DAYS: 8:00 am LAS POSADAS On Thursday, December 20th at 5:30 pm we will be celebrating Las Posadas. We will begin our procession at the gymnasium and end at the church. This is a wonderful Mexican Christmas tradition. Las posadas literally translates in English as "the inns" or "the lodgings" and symbolizes the Biblical journey of Mary and Joseph as they searched for shelter in Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus. The nine-day celebration lasts from December 16 to Christmas Eve (Noche Buena or "Holy Night") and includes a candle-lit procession of children and parents reenacting Mary and Joseph's journey through Bethlehem. The holiday ritual includes a lively and colorful pageant of kids (the "pilgrims" or peregrinos) - costumed as Joseph, Mary, angels, shepherds and the Three Wise Men - who travel from house to house until they reach a designated home where Las Posadas will be celebrated that year. Upon arrival, the hosts or "innkeepers" meet the procession at the door to begin the holiday fiesta with an exchange of lyrics from the traditional Pidiendo (asking for) Posada: The song goes on for several stanzas until Joseph and Mary are finally recognized and allowed inside with everyone singing in unison: Outside Singers In the name of heaven, I ask you for shelter because my beloved wife can continue no longer. Let us sing with joy, all bearing in mind that Jesus, Joseph and Mary honor us by having come. Inside Singers This is no inn, continue on your way. I am not about to open. You may be a scoundrel. Soon, everyone begins celebrating with traditional songs & prayers - just before an explosion of merrymaking that includes Christmas party music, piñata bashing, sweet treats and fireworks!

We desire to express our commitment to this call through praise filled celebration which culminates in our being sent into the Las Vegas community to reach actively out to others. Thus, we seek to grow in Wisdom and Christian love. Gaudete Sunday The Third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday, the 'pink candle' Sunday, the Sunday we light the pink candle on the Advent wreath. Gaudete is the imperative plural form of the Latin verb gaudere (to rejoice). It is a command ordering us to rejoice! In these days of penance and preparation leading up to the feast of our Savior's birth, it reminds us of the joy that is to come, and serves, amid this season of penance, as a kind of 'break' when we recall the hope we have because of the coming of Jesus. In Advent, we not only celebrate the first coming of our Lord, but eagerly prepare for His Second Coming as well, when the restoration of all things takes place. Too often many of us shudder at the thought of our Lord's coming in glory, as if it were a frightening event and certainly it will be for those who knowingly rejected Jesus. But for Christians who persevere it will be our great deliverance from the troubles and trials of this world. All the world will bend the knee some in terror but as for God's friends, they will bend the knee in joyful adoration as Jesus takes His place as King. The earliest Christians cried 'Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!' expecting Jesus to come at any moment. So should we... we should long for His return with our lamps trimmed and our souls ready. It is indeed something to celebrate... and prepare for. Advent turns our hearts and minds to this reality. Should commercialism or the evils of the world get us down we need to look at the Advent wreath with its candles burning down patiently, a new one each week in the spiral they create, going down as we light the pink one this week which fills us with joy that we are getting closer and closer to the coming of the Lord. We can place ourselves on the hillsides with the shepherds in the silent chill with patient anticipation of they-knew-not-what until the angel told them. We can imagine the three wise men silhouetted in the brightness of the Christmas star. And then we can meditate on being in that stable with the smell of straw, animals, and a beautiful Newborn Who is our hope. We can let our burdens drop away at the foot of the manger when He smiles at us. We can receive Him into our arms and hearts as Mary holds Him out to us as the gentle Joseph looks on. This Child is our victory. REJOICE! Page 3

LITURGY CORNER THIRD WEEK OF ADVENT This weekend marks the midway point for our Advent journey. Where are you on that journey right now? Are there still some things you would like to change? Have you taken the time and opportunity to come to church and walk the LABYRINTH in the daily chapel? Have you extended yourself to others during these weeks of preparation for Christmas? It's not too late as we continue on our path. This week we celebrate our liturgy with "JOY" symbolized by the pink candle in our Advent wreath. What special "joy" will you bring to someone this week? Happy journey! Fearless Rejoicing Deluged by Mercy s Passion We are you... on Earth Lydia Wiltse LIVING OUR FAITH VALUES IN THE WORKPLACE Guardian Angel Cathedral Ethics in the Marketplace is the title of the ministry of Jesuit, Fr. Max Oliva, who makes his home in the Vegas Valley at St. Christopher Parish. On the last Wednesday of each month, Father Oliva is the Presider for the noon Mass at Guardian Angel Cathedral. The focus of his homilies (sermons) is Living One s Faith Values in the Workplace. Non-Catholics are welcome. For information on Father s work, see his web site: http://ethicsinthemarketplace.com Future dates of this Mass: December 19 th The Cathedral is located at 336 Cathedral Way. It is situated just north of the Encore Hotel, on the east side of the Strip. There is plenty of FREE parking available. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Look around most Catholic churches, and you will discover an image of John the Baptist, often in the old baptistery, or in a window near where the font is or was located. He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemorating his birth, and the other his death. There are only three nativities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John s birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke s Gospel of the angel s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptist s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. Even at the polar opposite of Christmas in the calendar, the energy of Christ s birth in the Incarnation provides cause for rejoicing. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Begin date: January 19. 2013 Saturdays mornings from 9-12 We will work this schedule until the course is complete. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based religious formation program for children, beginning at the age of three. It seeks to create and facilitate a sacred, hands-on space for children called an atrium, in which both the children and the catechists can hear, ponder, and celebrate the most essential mysteries of the Christian faith as revealed in the scriptures and the liturgy. Originally developed in Rome by Dr. Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi over 50 years ago, the Catechesis continues to spread worldwide and is used with adaptation in various Christian traditions. This Level I course grounds the participant in the theory and praxis of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd while also concretely preparing her/him to develop and facilitate an atrium for 3-6 year olds. Course Objectives: To explore with participants the general developmental and religious characteristics of the 3-6 year old child. To facilitate meditation upon the biblical and liturgical themes of the Catechesis. To offer guidelines and assistance to catechists in setting up an atrium for 3-6 year olds, preparing an album, and making materials. To deepen participants ability to observe and learn from children, while also exploring avenues for deepening parental and congregational ability to observe and learn from children. Teresa M.
