Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Belle Chasse, Louisiana Welcome, Fr. Walter Butor! Fr. Walter was ordained at St. Benedict the African Parish, in Chicago, where he did his ministry as a seminarian. Fr. Walt completed his undergraduate in communications at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, and then worked in Pittsburgh at various jobs. Fr. Walt entered formation in St. Louis in 1996, took his first vows in 1998, and then began studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He earned a Master of Divinity degree in 2003. Having a great desire to work with the poor and minority populations, Fr. Butor offered whatever services he could at the predominately Black Catholic parish, where he was ordained. Fr. Walt also had an interest in working with Native Americans; consequently he served a year of pastoral internship on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota. For his first assignment, Fr. Walt became part of the Oblate community ministering with the Native Americans and Euro-American in Sisseton, SD located on the reservation of the SissetonWahpeton Sioux. Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time What Does the Our Father Really Mean? What the Prayer Means The Our Father has seven petitions. The first three are about God; the last four are about our needs. Let s look at what the words of this prayer mean. Our Father We address God as Father, just as Jesus did. Jesus called God Abba, and God is our Abba, too. He is not a force or a cold, impersonal, almighty being, but our Father, the one who created us and loves us. At Baptism, we became God s adopted children. As children of God, we are a family, bound together as brothers and sisters. That is why we pray our Father and not just my Father. Who art in heaven Heaven is wherever God is. It is the destiny God intends for us. Hallowed be thy name Hallowed means holy. So in this phrase we praise God by declaring that he is holy. We pray that everyone live in a way that glorifies God. Thy kingdom come God s kingdom is characterized by justice and peace. In God s kingdom, all people live in love; there are no enemies. We pray that this kingdom, begun by Jesus, may come in its fullness, and we wait for the Lord s return at the end of time. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven In the kingdom of heaven, saints and angels serve and honor God with great joy. We pray that people on earth also serve and honor God, so that we can experience the peace and joy of God s kingdom. Jesus and Mary show us how to live according to God s will. Give us this day our daily bread Aware that all good gifts come from God, we ask him to give us what we need each day. Bread also refers both to the Word of God, which nourishes us, and to the sacred Bread of the Eucharist. This petition makes the Our Father a good prayer to pray before meals. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us We should pay close attention when we pray this. Trespasses is another word for sins. We ask God to forgive our sins in the same way that we are willing to forgive others, even our enemies. And lead us not into temptation Temptations are pressures or urges to sin. People, places, and things can tempt us or lead us into sin. We ask God to strengthen and protect us from these. But deliver us from evil We ask God to save us from all evil and the Evil One, Satan. Then we will belong to God s kingdom and live in perfect joy forever. Totally Catholic!, by Mary Kathleen Glavich, SND Voca ons Crucifix The Voca ons Crucifix is a special crucifix that travels from family to family to inspire prayer for voca ons. It is to intercede for voca ons and encourage families to discuss priestly or other religious voca ons. The Crucifix, prayer brochure, and sign up sheets are on the voca ons table in the library. Thank you for your commitment to praying for voca ons. Hurricane Prayer Our Father in heaven, through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, spare us from all harm during this hurricane season; and protect us and our homes from all disasters of nature. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. AMEN
