The word for summer in Hebrew is kayitz. It shares the same letters as the word ketz which means end. Indeed, although we bemoan the heat and humidity that we experience here in Louisiana, summer nevertheless brings the end of the hectic school year which drives our society. Life always ramps up when young people start going back to school in August and it doesn t seem to slow down until the last school bell rings sometime in May. The summer allows us to slow down our pace. Many families set aside time to enjoy each other s company- often going away for vacations. The strong summer sun beats down on us and we find that we have no choice but to temper our schedules adding downtime. Summer is conducive to early morning walks and late evening barbeques. It is a time for visits to the beach and any other body of water that we can dip into! The summer allows us opportunities for just taking it easy. The days stretch out before us and enable us to step back and look at our lives. The small Hebrew letter that separates the word summer from the end is the letter yud. It is the letter found in the various names of God. As we experience the end of the year and find ways to enjoy the long hot days of summer, we begin to direct our attention to the Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur which will soon be here. On September 4th, we will come together as a community to celebrate the beginning of the year 5774. We will seek God s guidance as we engage in the deep soul searching that the Hebrew calendar invites us to do every year during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I look forward to seeing you there. In the meantime, enjoy the last few weeks of summer. May they bring you rest, relaxation and rejuvenation as the New Year approaches once again.
Volume 71, Issue 11 Page 2 President s Message by Marc Sager The summer is coming to a close. Our opportunity for fun in the sun, a walk around the lakes, a weekend hike or seeing a good movie on a Saturday afternoon are slowly disappearing. If you are like me, this time of the year seems to go by way to fast. So what s next? The High Holy Days are almost upon us and for many, it means a time of focus and reflection on our faith and our synagogue. With a new year approaching, I reflect on the health and welfare of our synagogue and our congregants. A recent article in the Southern Jewish Life Magazine talks about anti-semitism and the decrease of incidences across the nation over the last few years. This news is certainly encouraging, but that doesn t mean we shouldn t still be vigilant. When you are at the synagogue, take some time to familiarize yourself with your surroundings. If you see something, unusual, out of place, or out of the ordinary, please tell someone. We are our best source of security when it comes to protecting each other. We can t go through life thinking everything will always be right with the world. We need to keep our heads up, our eyes open, be aware and speak up making sure that the injustices of the past stay in the and past allowing us another sweet and wonderful New Year. Marc

This service is a means of preparing for the upcoming High Holy Days. The mood of Selichot is one of contemplation and self examination in keeping with the mood of the season. Page 7 Tashlich - Down By the Riverside - September 8th, 12pm Bring a picnic lunch and breadcrumbs to toss into the river. Tashlich, the beautiful ceremony held beside a river or lake, will take place again this year on the levee between Louisiana Arts & Science Museum and the USS Kidd. This is one of the ways that we prepare for Yom Kippur by symbolically casting our sins in the depths of the waters. We will read prayers, sound the Shofar, and cast breadcrumbs into the river. Following the service, we will join together for a festive Yom Tov picnic lunch. So BYOD (bring your own delicacies!) Memorial Service - Kever Avot - September 8th, 4:30pm Judaism encourages us to avoid excessive grave visitation. The rabbis were apprehensive that frequent visiting to the cemetery might become a pattern of living that would prevent the bereaved from placing their grief in proper perspective. HIGH HOLY DAY APPEAL For this reason, Judaism established propitious times to visit the graves of loved ones. One of these times is during the High Holy Day Season. Rabbi Jordan will lead a Memorial Service known as a Kever Avot on Sunday, September 8th at 4:30pm at the Jewish Cemetery. This is an opportunity to honor the memory of your loved ones. The Board of Trustees for Congregation B nai Israel invites all congregants and our guests to begin the New Year by making a High Holy Day gift to the synagogue and ful illing the Commandment of Tzedakah. Again this year, we will place donation envelopes in the synagogue foyer and in the prayer books. Please consider a generous gift. Historically, the Men's Club has enriched the quality of synagogue life through events and activities including Sukkot building and the very successful Men's Club shopping spree with underprivileged children. The average experience of the sales staff in the insurance industry is over 20 years while the average of the clerical staff is over 10 years. The main marketing area of the agency is the East Baton Rouge, Livingston, and Tangipahoa Parish areas. The agency does currently handle specialized business covering the entire state of Louisiana as well as business in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas. The current mix of business is comprised of 70% commercial and 30% personal insurance.
