Even so, colonial laws restricted the practice of the Catholic faith, and just as in England, Americans who desired to be priests or nuns had to go to the Netherlands or France. As political storm clouds gathered in France, an American woman, Mother Bernardina Matthews, the prioress of the Hoogstraeten Carmel in Holland, made a brave move. With two other American nuns, her nieces, and a Dutch sister, she came to Port Tobacco, Maryland, in 1790. Within twenty years the community had grown to twenty, although by 1823 their farm failed and they had to move to Baltimore and open a school. The Carmelite order requires contemplation and cloister, so in time the school was closed. The Port Tobacco land had long since been sold, but in 1976 a community of nuns was able to return thanks to loyal neighbors who had worked for forty years for their restoration. Today, our original American convent is fully alive in prayer, hard work, and strong community. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. LITUGICAL MINISTERS: Special Requests for the September - November scheduling period need to be turned in by Monday, August 6 th. Forms can be found in the St. Joseph s room or on-line. THE COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS: Our Next meeting will be on Monday, July 23 rd at 7:00pm in the church. If you or someone you know has experienced child loss this group is a supportive safe place for you and your grief to be surrounded by people who know and care. 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 PASTOR S CORNER: July 25 th marks the 50 th anniversary of the encyclical Humanae Vitae (Of Human Life), written by Blessed Pope Paul VI. Bishop Perez has written a letter encouraging everyone to read this encyclical in its entirety. The bishop s letter can be found on the diocesan website (dioceseofcleveland.org). The following are a few quotes from his letter: Humanae Vitae is best known for its defense of the ancient teaching of the Church that the procreative dimension is an essential and inseparable element of the marital act. In this, the encyclical affirmed two essential and related dimensions of conjugal love namely the unitive and procreative ends. Any attempt to remove one of these dimensions results in a diminishment of the other end and of the meaning of marriage in general.. What is unfortunate is that the almost exclusive attention given to this negative aspect of the encyclical has resulted in a failure to appreciate the positive element of the pope s teaching. For example, the reflection on married love as being free, total, faithful and fruitful is beautifully embodied in the Rite of Marriage and a worthy reflection on the ideal of married love that God calls all married couples to embody in their vocations. The same can be said of the pope s reflection on the great dignity of marriage and the true holiness that constitutes this vocation. Fr. John PARISH COUNCIL: Three members of the council, Julie Gauvreau, Jon Axe and Don Carmichael, will be completing their term of service at the September meeting. We are in the process now of looking for interested parishioners who will take their place on council beginning with the October meeting. The commitment to council is for three years with an option for an additional year. Parish Council meets on the first Thursday of each month with a break in August. If you are interested in being on Parish Council please see any one of the current members whose names are listed on the front of the bulletin or contact Fr. John. HELP! I could use some help preparing the homilies for the 5 weeks of the Bread of Life discourse from the Gospel of John (July 29 th Aug. 6 th ). I will have prepared for the first weekend which is July 29 th but if you would like to learn more about the Eucharist as revealed in John s gospel or share insights on how the readings affect your daily lives, and help me, please meet me on Saturday, July 28 th at 10:00am in the church. We will be reflecting upon the readings which come from the 6 th chapter of the Gospel of John (John 6:1-60) as well as looking at other resources to further our understanding and appreciation for this great sacrament. SOLITUDE: Settle yourself in solitude, and you will come upon God in yourself. St. Teresa MINISTRY OF GREETER: The role of a Greeter is to welcome people as they come into church for mass by greeting them, offering them a hymnal and answering questions or giving directions. This is a ministry that the whole family can become involved in. Young children love greeting people and it gives them a sense of participation. This ministry sets the tone for the entire mass and reminds us that we can make a difference in the lives of others throughout the week by showing hospitality and a warm welcome. If you are interested in becoming a Greeter please contact the parish office or Sue Wiedenmannott who heads up this ministry. The true peacemakers are those who maintain peace of mind and body for love of our Lord Jesus Christ, no matter what they must endure in this world. St. Francis of Assisi PARISH NETWORKING NIGHT: The Catholic Action Commission of Lorain County is hosting a Parish Networking Night on Thursday, July 26 th from 6-7:30pm at the Weigand Room at St. Mary Church, Elyria. There will be a presentation on the themes of Catholic Social Teaching followed by table discussions on key social issues affecting our entire human community, including Immigration/family separation, human trafficking, and climate change. All are welcome! For more info contact Daniel Alonso at dalonso@ccdocle.org or 440.366.1106 x12

If you know someone who may be interested in becoming Catholic now would be a good time to give them that nudge that they may need. It is a good time during these next few months to help them to come in touch with the call of God in their lives and to direct them to myself, Grace Ogonek, Sally Logar, Chuck Rink, or Kathy Keyse. We would be more than happy to sit down with them to answer questions and ease anxieties. The RCIA process for those seeking to become Catholic will begin in September. Also if you are interested in being on the team that journeys with the candidates to the Easter sacraments please let us know. It is so rewarding sharing ones faith and being nurtured by those seeking a deeper relationship with God through participation in the Catholic Church. MUCH-NEEDED PRAYER Each Christian needs half an hour of prayer each day, except when we are busy; then we need an hour. St. Francis de Sales
