Page 2 Sunday, November April 19, 1, 2015 Dear Friends in Christ, All Saints Day! This Holy Day normally falls on a weekday, but this year it lands on Sunday which provides an opportunity to reflect on this inspiring part of our Catholic faith. Anyone who is in heaven with God is a saint, so we are all called to holiness and union with God, and ultimately sainthood. That being said, we have many saints who have been canonized and are lifted up to us as role models in the faith. When Pope Francis was in the United States he canonized a new saint, St. Junipero Serra, a Franciscan missionary who brought the Catholic faith to parts of the western United States. Page 3 Our beliefs about the saints point out the importance of family, community, and the Church. Those who have gone before us in death and are with God are still connected to the Church on earth. God s family is not only here on earth, it is also present in heaven. The saints pray for us and inspire us to live our faith with passion and courage. The lives of the saints point to Jesus. The greatest saint is the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her deepest desire is to draw us closer to her Son. We don t worship the saints, because only God is worthy of worship. We honor and venerate the saints because of their heroic faith and holy lives, and we ask for their intercession. Some of you may be thinking that you don t have a shot at sainthood because you have too many issues. We all need God s grace and we all need conversion. St. Jerome struggled with a bad temper his whole life. St. The re se of Lisieux had some issues with anxiety and worry. St. Thomas Aquinas had some struggles with his weight. St. Augustine was a wayward young man and who needed to make significant changes in his life after he finally connected with God. The virtue present in the lives of all the saints was humility. They realized they needed God s grace and they allowed God to transform them. They had different gifts but they allowed the light and love of the Lord to shine through them in order to lift others up. If you have some character defects and weaknesses that you struggle with, don t lose heart. The lives of the saints are stories of God s grace. Fr. James Martin, SJ, recently wrote a book entitled Between Heaven and Mirth. He highlights how important joy, humor and laughter are in the spiritual life. Author Henri Nouwen notes that an infallible sign of God s presence is joy. The Joy of the Gospel was the title of Pope Francis first written work after becoming Pope. This type of joy isn t a superficial let s always try to smile and be happy type of joy. For a Christian it s rooted in the resurrection of Jesus and the promise that he will be with us always. A deep, abiding relationship with Jesus Christ produces this spirit of joy. When we radiate this joy it has a way of drawing people to Christ and the Church. Too often depictions of the saints paint them as excessively somber and gloomy. I m sure they shared this holy joy in a generous way. As we commemorate All Saints Day, may their prayers help us on our journey of faith. May their example of faith and discipleship be an inspiration to us. Through our faithfulness to God and the gospel message may we be blessed to one day join them in the Kingdom of heaven. In Christ, Msgr. Steve All Souls Day All are Welcome to A Special Memorial Mass Celebrated on Monday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Crane Road Church. During November, the Church prays for those who have died. Plan to stop in the entrance of either church during the month of November and write the names of your deceased loved ones in our Book of Life. The Book of Life and a memorial list of parish members who have died throughout the past year will be displayed as a reminder to pray for the deceased and their families. Our 7:00 am and 8:30 am Masses will be celebrated as usual.

Sunday, November 1, 2015 Page 3 Our Parish Mission with Fr. Albert Haase, OFM November 16 18 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. At the Crane Rd. Church Signed and Sealed with the Cross He will speak at all the Masses the weekend of November 14 and 15 and then over three nights will lead us in the parish mission. We will explore the identity of our God proclaimed in the ancient gesture of being signed with a Cross. We will also explore the challenges & responsibilities we accept when we seal our lives with the sign of our salvation. Ordained a Franciscan priest in 1983, Fr. Albert, is a popular preacher, teacher, spiritual director and radio personality. A former missionary to mainland China for over eleven years, he is the author of eight books on popular spirituality and the presenter on three best selling DVDs by Paraclete Press. This will be a great opportunity to reach out to family and friends and invite them to join us for this life-giving parish mission. Participation Needed for Parish Focus Groups As stated in my letter last week, Our Parish Council would like to ask for your input once again. If you have a strong interest in any of these ministry areas, please come and share your wisdom and experience. To participate in one of the groups, please call Jenny at the parish office at 630-338-8013 or you can e-mail her at jhansen@stpatrickparish.org. We would like to invite adult parishioners to participate in a series of Focus Groups to help us gather some feedback in a number of key ministry areas. Sessions will last approximately 90 minutes. Each group of 8-12 participants will have a facilitator who will ask the group to respond to a series of questions to help us ascertain our strengths and where we need to improve. The Parish Council will also utilize input from the Parish Staff as well as additional information from the Diocese of Rockford and the surrounding communities. Our parish is in the process of creating a strategic plan to help guide our parish life for the next several years. We re going to develop a parish mission statement and a number of goals to focus our ministry life. Last January we surveyed the whole parish at all Masses which provided some very helpful input. Here are the Focus Groups and the times they will meet: Monday, November 9, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Pastoral Care and Outreach to the Poor these ministries provide care for the hurting, and service to those in need. Being a Welcoming Parish Outreach to Disconnected Catholics. Adult Faith Formation/Education Bible Studies, Retreats, Faith Enrichment, Marriage Enrichment. Tuesday, November 10, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Middle School and High School Youth Ministry Technology and Use of Social Media Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Liturgy and Music we ll look at our liturgical life as a parish and our music ministries. Religious Education Program Kindergarten through Confirmation Prep. Young Adult Ministry These eight groups do not encompass every ministry in the parish, but they ll help us get started. Please keep this ministry planning process in your prayers. Let s work together to help our parish grow even stronger in doing the Lord s work. God bless you always!

Sunday, November 1, 2015 Page 9 St. Patrick Catholic School... Exciting things are going on from 8th Grade to Preschool. Activities that enhance classroom experience are regularly planned: One of the goals at school this year is to deepen our Catholic Identity. Each homeroom has chosen a saint to represent the room. Students will not only learn about the life of this saint, but begin to understand their relationship to God, the virtues they developed that helped them attain the title of saint. It is the goal of the school that by a student beginning in Kindergarten and remaining through eighth grade, thoroughly studying the life of one saint each year will have them graduating with a wealth of knowledge and a heart for sainthood as well. Some of the saints chosen include St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Monica, and Mother Frances Cabrini. St. Thérèse is known for her living out her Little Way. She had a difficult childhood and was quite sickly. At a very early age she wanted to enter the Lisieux Carmel. She spent her days in prayer and service to others. She wrote, "My heart was filled with charity. I forgot myself to please others and, in doing so, became happy myself." Thus began her little way. She strove to be childlike in her faith and acceptance of God s will for her life. She is an excellent example of acceptance and grace in suffering. The feast day of St. Thérèse was on October 1 st. Through stories like these and many, many others, our students will come to experience how struggles are overcome, lives are simply or heroically lived, all for the love of Jesus. Preschool Has A New Library! In order to make room for our PK2 classes, we needed to move our library. Boy are we glad we did! Our new library has a check out desk, chairs, bean bags and lots of room for an entire class to fit inside comfortably not to mention LOTS and LOTS of BOOKS that have been donated by preschool and parish families. Our PK3 and PK4 students visit the library and check out books twice a month. Thank you so much to all who donated books to our library. We d like to keep our library growing! Please contact us if you have any donations of gently used or new books. Thank you! Mrs. Draftz homeroom has made roses and done a novena to St. Thérèse of Lisieux Outdoor Playhouse Needed: Are you ready to get rid of an outdoor playhouse that your children/grandchildren have outgrown? The preschool playground is in need of a new play structure and we d be happy to take your gently used one off your hands. Please take a picture and email it, along with approximate dimensions to us at preschool@stpatrickparish.org. Come and Join the FUN! We still have preschool spots available in our PK2, PK3 and PK4 programs for this year. If you know of anyone who is looking for an award winning, faith-based preschool program, please refer them to St. Patrick Catholic Preschool. Interested parents can contact Veronica Day at 630-338-8200 for more info. & to schedule a tour. Find out why we were voted one of the Best of the Fox preschools by St. Charles parents. We Are No Longer Accepting Ink Cartridges In the past we accepted ink cartridges and cell phones that could be recycled. We are discontinuing this program and the boxes have been removed. Please do not drop off any of these products. Thank you!

Please Check Out These & Other Materials in the Lighthouse Catholic Media Kiosks Maria Goretti - Booklet In 1902 in an Italian village a young girl, Maria Goretti, was murdered during a sexual attack. Her killer, Alessandro Serenelli, himself a teenager, was a close neighbour well known to her and her family. He had been threatening her for some time. What does it mean, how can it help, to say that she is a virgin and martyr? This is an often misunderstood and sentimentalized story. When many parents & teenagers strive for a balanced view of sexuality, of personal integrity, of Christian family life, and forgiveness to those who do irreparable harm, Maria's story speaks powerfully and authentically. It echoes Blessed Pope John Paul II's cry to today's youth - "Do not be afraid to be saints!" Former Satanist Becomes Catholic How great a threat is the occult? In this provocative testimony, former satanist, Betty Brennan shares the story of her remarkable journey from a dark existence of devil worship to the fulfillment of truth in Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. You will be enlightened by her amazing sojourn, her search for deliverance, and her mission to open the eyes of others to the truth of the devil. Parishioner Comments This CD is awesome! It reminded me of the spiritual warfare going on and the POWER of the Sacraments and the Mass! ~Susan - Sterling Heights, MI Praise the Lord Jesus Christ! This CD is a real eye opener. It gives very important information about satanists. ~ Anna - Linden, NJ
