READINGS AND MUSIC FOR ADVENT Sunday 30 November 2014 The lights are lowered and the congregation stands The Choir enters singing LAUDES REGIÆ Christus vincit, Christus regnat, Christus imperat! Exaudi, Christe, exaudi Christe. O Emmanuel, Rex et Legifer noster, exspectatio gentium et Salvator earum! Christus vincit, Christus regnat, Christus imperat! Ipsi soli imperium, laus et jubilatio per infinita sæcula sæculorum. Amen. Tempora bona habeant, redempti sanguine Christi. Feliciter! Feliciter! Feliciter! Pax Christi veniat! Regnum Christi veniat! Deo gratias. Amen. Christus vincit, Christus regnat, Christus imperat! Christ is victorious, Christ reigns, Christ rules over all! Christ, hear us, Christ, hear us. O Emmanuel, our King and our Lawgiver, whom the nations have longed for and their Saviour! Christ is victorious, Christ reigns, Christ rules over all! His alone are the power and the praise and the jubilation throughout endless ages and for evermore. Amen. Let those redeemed by the blood of Christ enjoy good times. Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice! Let the peace of Christ come upon us, let Christ s kingdom come! Thanks be to God. Amen. Christ is victorious, Christ reigns, Christ rules over all! [Anonymous early mediæval] Bidding and Lord s Prayer The congregation sits Antiphon for December 16th O Sapientia O Wisdom, which camest out of the mouth of the Most High, and reachest from one end to the other, mightily and sweetly ordering all things: come and teach us the way of prudence. 2

Ecce dominus veniet Ecce, Dominus veniet et omnes sancti ejus cum eo, alleluia. Et erit in die illa lux magna. Alleluia. Behold the Lord comes, and all his saints with him, alleluia. And there shall be in that day a great light. Alleluia. Victoria Antiphon for December 17th O Adonaï O Adonaï, and Leader of the house of Israel, who appearedst in the bush to Moses in a flame of fire, and gavest him the Law in Sinai: come and deliver us with an outstretched arm. 1st Lesson Haggai 2: 6-9 The prophet foretells the advent of the desire of all nations Antiphon for December 18th O Radix Jesse O Root of Jesse, which standest for an ensign of the people, at whom kings shall shut their mouths, to whom the Gentiles shall seek: come and deliver us, and tarry not. Lætentur cœli Byrd Lætentur cœli, et exsultet terra. Jubilate montes laudem, quia Dominus noster veniet, et pauperum suorum miserebitur. Orietur in diebus tuis justitia, et abundantia pacis. Rejoice, O heavens, and exult, O earth. Be joyful, ye mountains, and give praise, for our Lord will come and will have mercy upon the poor of his people. Righteousness shall arise in thy days and abundance of peace. [Responsorium for Advent in the Sarum Breviary] 2nd Lesson Jeremiah 23: 5-6 The Lord promises to send His people a righteous King Antiphon for December 19th O Clavis David O Key of David, and Sceptre of the house of Israel, that openest and no man shutteth, and shuttest and no man openeth: come and bring the prisoner out of the prison-house, and him that sitteth in darkness and the shadow of death. 3

Conditor alme siderum Creator of the stars of night, Thy people s everlasting light, O Jesu, Saviour of us all, Regard thy people when they call. Thou, grieving at the bitter cry Of all creation doomed to die, Didst come to save a ruined race With healing gifts of heavenly grace. Thou camest Bridegroom of the bride, As drew the world to evening tide; Proceeding from a virgin shrine, The Son of Man, yet Lord divine. At thy great Name, exalted now, All knees must bend, all hearts must bow; And things in heaven and earth shall own, That thou art Lord and King alone. To thee, O holy One we pray, Our judge in that tremendous day, Preserve us, while we dwell below, From every onslaught of the foe. All praise eternal Son to thee, Whose advent sets thy people free, Whom with the father we adore, And Spirit blest for evermore. Amen. Hemmings Hymn: HARK! A HERALD VOICE Hark! a herald voice is calling: Christ is nigh, it seems to say; Cast away the dreams of darkness, O ye children of the day! Startled at the solemn warning, Let the earth-bound soul arise; Christ, her Sun, all sloth dispelling, Shines upon the morning skies. 4

Lo! the Lamb, so long expected, Comes with pardon down from heaven; Let us haste, with tears of sorrow, One and all to be forgiven; So when next he comes with glory, Wrapping all the earth in fear, May he then as our defender Of the clouds of heaven appear. Honour, glory, virtue, merit, To the Father and the Son, With the co-eternal Spirit, While unending ages run. Amen. 3rd Lesson Zechariah 9: 9-10 The Lord promises that the King will come to Israel in peace Antiphon for December 20th O Oriens O Day-spring, Brightness of Light everlasting, and Sun of Righteousness: come and enlighten him that sitteth in darkness and the shadow of death. How lovely are the messengers Mendelssohn How lovely are the messengers that preach us the gospel of peace! To all the nations is gone forth the sound of their words, throughout all the lands their glad tidings. [Romans 10: 15, 18] 4th Lesson Isaiah 40: 1-8 The prophet proclaims Good News to a people in exile Antiphon for December 21st O Rex gentium O King of the nations, and their desire: the Corner-stone, who makest both one: come and save mankind, whom thou formedst of clay. 5

Prepare ye the way Wise Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Ev ry valley shall be exalted and ev ry mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight and the rough places shall be made plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together. And the voice said cry, (What shall I cry?) all flesh is grass, and the goodliness thereof is as a flower that is in the field. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the word of the Lord shall stand fast forever. O Zion, that bringeth glad tidings, get thee up into the montains. O Jerusalem, that bringeth glad tidings lift up thy voice with strength and say unto Judah, behold thy God. [Words from Isaiah 40] Hymn: ON JORDAN S BANK On Jordan s bank the Baptist s cry, Announces that the Lord is nigh: Come then and hearken, for he brings. Glad tidings from the King of kings. Then cleansed be every Christian breast, And furnished for so great a Guest! Yea! let us each our hearts prepare For Christ to come and enter there. For Thou art our salvation, Lord, Our refuge and our great reward, Without thy grace our souls must fade, And wither like a flower decayed. Stretch forth thine hand, to heal our sore, And make us rise, to fall no more; Once more upon thy people shine, And fill the world with love divine. All praise, eternal Son to thee, Whose advent sets thy people free; Whom, with the Father we adore, And Spirit blest, for evermore. Amen 6

5th Lesson Isaiah 35: 1-6 The prophet foretells the story of the Kingdom of God Antiphon for December 22nd O Emmanuel O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver, the desire of all nations and their salvation: come and save us, O Lord our God. A New Song MacMillan O sing unto the Lord a new song, Sing unto the Lord all the whole earth. Sing unto the Lord and Praise His Name, Be telling of His salvation from day to day. For He cometh to judge the earth, And with righteousness to judge the world and the people with His truth. [Psalm 96 vv. 1, 2, 13] Hymn: O COME, O COME, EMMANUEL O come, O come, Emmanuel! Redeem thy captive Israel That into exile drear is gone, Far from the face of God s dear Son. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, thou Wisdom from on high! Who madest all in earth and sky, Creating man from dust and clay: To us reveal salvation s way. Rejoice!... O come, O come, Adonai, Who in thy glorious majesty From that high mountain clothed in awe, Gavest thy folk the elder Law. Rejoice!... O come, thou Root of Jesse! draw The quarry from the lion s claw; From those dread caverns of the grave, From nether hell, thy people save. Rejoice!... 7

O come, thou Lord of David s Key! The royal door fling wide and free; Safeguard for us the heavenward road, And bar the way to death s abode. Rejoice!... O come, O come, thou Dayspring bright! Pour on our souls thy healing light; Dispel the long night s lingering gloom, And pierce the shadows of the tomb. Rejoice!... O Come, Desire of Nations! Show Thy kingly reign on earth below; Thou Corner-stone, uniting all, Restore the ruin of our fall. Rejoice!... 6th Lesson Luke 1: 26-35, 38 The Annunciation of the Lord to the Blessed Virgin Mary Antiphon for December 23rd O Virgo virginum O Virgin of virgins, how shall this be? For neither before thee was any like thee, nor shall there be after. Daughters of Jerusalem, why marvel ye at me? The thing which ye behold is a Divine mystery. Nova! Nova! Gabriel of high degree, He came down from Trinity, To Nazareth in Galilee, He met a maiden in a place, He kneeled down afore her face. He said, Hail, Mary, full of grace! When the maid heard tell of this She was full sore abashed I-wys, And wened that she had done amiss. 8 Bob Chilcott

[Anonymous, 15th century] The congregation stands Then said the angel, Dread not you, You shall conceive in all vertue A Child whose name shall be Jesu. It is not yet six months agone Since Elizabeth conceived John, As it was prophesied before. Then said the maiden verily: I am your servant right truly, Ecce ancilla Domini. 7th Lesson Mark 1: 1-15 Our Lord proclaims the Gospel of the Kingdom of God Saviour of the nations [Words by B. H. Kennedy] Saviour of the nations, come, Leave for us thy glorious home; Glad osannas we will sing, Greeting thee, our heavenly King. Come, Lord Jesus, take thy rest In the convert sinner s breast; Make the quicken d heart thy throne, Son of God, the Virgin s Son. Welcome to this vale of tears, Ripeness of the perfect years; Born as man with man to dwell, Come, our true Emmanuel. God in man, incarnate God, Sinless child of flesh and blood, Man in God, thy brethren we Raise us up to God in thee. 9 Hoddinott

Hymn: LO! HE COMES WITH CLOUDS DESCENDING Lo! he comes, with clouds descending, once for our salvation slain; thousand thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train: Alleluia! alleluia! alleluia! Christ the Lord returns to reign. Every eye shall now behold him, robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at nought and sold him, pierced, and nailed him to the tree, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. Those dear tokens of his passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshipers; with what rapture, with what rapture, with what rapture gaze we on those glorious scars! Yea, Amen! let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Savior, take the power and glory; claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! alleluia! alleluia! Thou shalt reign, and thou alone. The congregation remains standing for the Collect and the Blessing Voluntary (R Frowde) Toccata on Veni Emmanuel Andrew Carter 10

Remember a loved one at Christmas time with a Christmas Angel Decoration This is a unique way of celebrating and remembering the life of someone special to you, or commemorating a life lost in the Great War between 1914 and 1918, whilst helping to ensure that the music of The Chapel Royal continues for generations to come. Each donation of a minimum of 10, made to the Choral Foundation, secures a beautiful Christmas Angel Decoration. This will have the name of the person you nominate written on it and will then be hung on a Christmas tree in The Chapel Royal from the 1st Sunday in Advent to the end of December. In addition, the names of those commemorated in this way will be recorded in a book which will be displayed in the Chapel from Tuesday 6th January until the end of Christmastide on 2nd February and which is then kept in the Chapel records in perpetuity. An example of the Christmas Angel Decoration will be displayed at the back of the Chapel from the 1st Sunday in advent. Unfortunately, it is not possible to distribute them after Christmas. To reserve your Christmas Angel, please place the completed form, together with your donation in the envelope provided and place it in the large donation box at the back of the Chapel. A representative of The Choral Foundation will take care of the rest. For the last two years, the Christmas Angels have proved very popular and so I suggest that you register your interest as soon as possible so that your personal Angel can be displayed throughout Advent. Canon Denis Mulliner 11
