Saint Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church and School Community Our Mission Statement Saint Martin of Tours is a Roman Catholic Community bound together by the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, as we join Him in offering thanks and praise to God the Father through the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Molded by the Word of God and nourished by the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation, we are sent to seek out the lost, bind the broken, feed the hungry, and to share the Good News of God s mercy and love for all. We welcome all people of goodwill to join us in building here on Earth the coming Reign of God and so to offer to people of all ages continued formation in our Christian Faith. The Ascension Of The Lord May 28, 2017 Pastor s Note The Ascension of the Lord The Feast of the Ascension of the Lord should not be considered as a celebration of sadness or abandonment but as a new way Jesus makes himself present in the world and among his disciples. It marks the destination of all of us with God in heaven. Jesus had promised to his disciples and to us that he would remain with us until the end of the ages. Even though he ascended to his father in soul and body, he remains with us in the Eucharist, in the church, in those in need, and in us. He, as he promised, doesn t leave us orphans. After the Ascension, the invisible presence of Jesus was manifested. He continues to be present in this world through the apostles: The Church does not carry out the role of preparing for the return of an "absent" Jesus, but, on the contrary, lives and works to proclaim his "glorious presence" in a historical and existential way. Since the day of the Ascension, every Christian community has advanced on its earthly pilgrimage toward the fulfillment of the messianic promises, fed by the word of God and nourished by the Body and Blood of the Lord (Benedict XVI). We, the church, are called to continue the work of Jesus in the world. We are one of the ways he continues his presence. The meaning of our life is defined by the way we live and it is determined by the goal or goals we pursue. The goal of the Christian life is to be with the Father. All our actions are to honor and love the Father, and hope that the way we live our life and the way be treat others will lead us to that place we long to be. It is precisely this other part of the message of the Ascension that shows us the destination of the believers. Through his Ascension in to Heaven, He has revealed the destination of our earthly pilgrimage. As the liturgy expresses: where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope. In this way Jesus Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday May 27-June 2 5:00 Virginia Walczak 7:00 Betty Charles 8:30 Joe Frankina 10:00 David Grimm 11:30 Silvana Martin 6:00 St. Martin of Tours Parishioners 8:00 Socorro Martinez Melendez 8:00 Dr. Samuel Ballon 8:00 Manuel Espanol 8:00 Right to Life 8:00 Dianne Borella 8:00 Napoleon Echivarre shows us the way to live in this world, but also the purpose of our lives: heaven. The Ascension reminds us who we are and where we go. Two things that we should never forget. In every single moment of our lives, we need to remember our Christian identity that is always accompanied by the presence of our gracious Lord, of whom we are the image and his presence to the world. And even though we may sometimes detour on our way, we should always come back and continue our journey toward Heaven to be with our Father. -Fr. Sergio The Ascension of the Lord May 28, 2017 He was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. Acts 1:9

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION If you could somehow transport a thirdcentury Christian into your twenty-first-century Sunday Mass, once the initial shock wore off he or she would be more or less at home with the structure of the first part of the liturgy, the Word. The second part might be more difficult to comprehend. The stumbling block would be the book. We have a book, a missal that is set down on the altar with a very precisely prescribed set of words for the priest to say and the people to sing at the Eucharistic Prayer. In the early days of the church, there were no set formulas for this prayer. The ancients would have raised eyebrows at our bookishness since they preferred to let the prayers roll forth from a gifted leader of prayer. There was a basic shape to the prayer of thanksgiving, and almost general agreement that the words of Christ at the Last Supper ought to be included. By the second century, Justin Martyr wrote that the presider gives thanks at some length... and when he has finished the prayers and the thanksgiving, all the people present give their assent by saying Amen. In the world before books, people could memorize long passages of prose and poetry, and so it is easy to see how particular phrases or expressions passed from church to church. Rev.
