If the kingdom is near at hand, and already mysteriously present with Jesus, then it is of prime importance to opt for God without compromise, to serve him with a single heart, and to give ourselves to him with total confidence in his plan of salvation. No one can serve two masters. No one can serve both God and money! Any reality which exerts an insidious and brutal mastery over our lives is an idol. Money is often such an idol. Its domination threatens all people and things. The desire to possess it leads nations and families into conflict and into sacrificing the weak. Even those who give themselves enmeshed in the demands of mammon. Just as a women caresses her child, God wraps us in gentle care. We are invited to submit all our anxieties to God s providence. Money is often the final barrier which hinders that trust. Yet it is still impossible to rid ourselves of money. The problem is how to use it without becoming its slave. Money is a tool with which we work to cooperate with God in completing creation. We are called to live with confidence at the edge of an insecure universe and exchange thousands of life s anxious cares for the central focus of working for the kingdom. 40 Days for Life Christians throughout Pittsburgh are invited to take part in the international 40 Days for Life Campaign. The mission of 40 Days for Life is to unite the Body of Christ in the spiritual battle to end abortion. Through 40 Days for Life, 12,688 lives have been spared from abortion, 141 abortion workers converted and 75 abortion facilities have closed! Join us for 40 days of prayer & fasting and a peaceful vigil held every day from 7:00 am-7:00 pm. To find out more about how you can be involved, go to www.40daysforlifepittsburgh.com or www.40daysfor life.com/pittsburgh.

FEBRUARY 26, 2017 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 3 LENTEN REGULATIONS Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness. (Joel 2:12-13) Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent is less than two weeks away This beautiful season calls each one of us to true conversion. The penitential season of Lent calls all of us to acts of repentance through prayer, fasting and alms giving. Since Lent retains its ancient penitential character, the faithful should be reminded to make the entire Lenten season a period of special observance through the three practices of prayer, fasting and alms giving. 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. 2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly. 3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obligated to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. 4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. 6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation. Ash Wednesday Reflection The key word for the day is turn. The prophet Joel cries out the words of the Lord: Even now, return to me with your whole heart. This turning manifests itself in outward signs: fasting, almsgiving, prayer. But the essential turning is inward. Rend your hearts, not your garments. Those who fast and pray and give alms in order to be seen turn not to the Lord but to human acclaim and approval. The reward they seek is the reward they receive. But those who turn to God without seeking approval even from themselves, who give without letting the left hand see the right, allow God to measure the recompense. Your Father who sees in secret will repay you (Matt. C:4; cf. 6:6,18). The mystery is this: integrity cannot be bought. It is a gift. Turn to him, Joel says, and perhaps he will turn to you and leave behind him a blessing (cf. Joel 2:14). Human turning in selflessness hopes to meet God s free turning in blessing. For it is characteristic of God to relent, to turn. Jonah knew this and fled from his commission to preach repentance to the hated Ninevites. Is this not what I said? I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, rich in clemency, loathe to punish (cf. Jonah 4:2). However, the turning of God is always a surprise, always out of proportion to the gift of the rent heart. His people turn in fasting and prayer; he turns with the gift of life. At the climax of his turning, God made him who did not know sin to be sin that he might turn us to be the very holiness of God. He turned to take our nature that we, who did not know righteousness, might live by his life. We are a new creation, reconciled to God through Christ. Now the ministry of that gift has been entrusted to us. We are ambassadors for Christ, ambassadors of reconciliation. In Christ God has turned to us that we might turn to each other and all together return to him. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION During the season of Lent, we will have Eucharistic Adoration on Wednesdays (March 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5) from 9:00 am - 6:45 pm. Each Lent we are called to reflection, prayer, penance and fasting. Eucharistic Adoration is an opportunity for us to spend time with Our Lord in quiet prayer, meditation and adoration. Also, some additional ways of prayer and reflection available at Holy Sepulcher to enhance our Lenten journey are Daily Mass and Stations of the Cross. The Lord invited us to come be in His presence and spend time with him. IT S BEEN A LOOOOOOOONG TIME SINCE MY LAST CONFESSION The Light is Still On for You! is an initiative of the Diocese of Pittsburgh to encourage Catholics to avail themselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord. Confession will be available on Wednesday, March 15 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm in every Catholic parish in the Diocese. Due to Wednesday evening Mass, Holy Sepulcher will have confessions from 6:00-6:45 pm, Mass from 7:00-7:45 and confessions again from 7:45-9:00 pm. LENTEN SCHEDULE ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE: Wednesday, March 1 Mass: 7:30 am, 9:00 am & 7:00 pm (Distribution of Ashes at all Masses.)
