Dear Friends I hope you are all well. I am sitting in my office in Sderot, and wanted to update you in regard to the events from the last hour here in the city. After last night's events in Gaza, we all believed that today would be very noisy in Sderot. They cancelled school and the trains were also suspended. Surprisingly enough, today was quiet until... 5 pm I was walking outside the Bet Midrash and speaking on the phone with Chaim Leibtag in NY, when the sirens sounded for the first time. I ran into the Bet Midrash, and stayed there for several minutes. It was amazing how the students continued to learn amid the sirens and explosions, and I truly understood what we read in this past week's Torah portion- "HAKOL KOL YAAKOV, V'HAYADAYIM Y'DEI ESAV" "The voice is the voice of Yaakov and the hands are the hands of Esav". Our Rabbis teach us that when the sounds of learning and davening are strong enough, the hands of Esav can't hurt us. Unfortunately, when I went to daven Maariv in the Shul next to the Yeshiva, the doors were locked and it was dark. The sad reality is that there are still Shuls in Sderot which aren't rocket proof. As a result, they had to cancel davening. The supermarket across the street from the Yeshiva which I frequently visit, had to close due to a rocket which fell right behind it and caused a huge fire (picture follows). Baruch Hashem, no one was hurt seriously. A few bystanders were hurt from glass. The sirens have been sounding all over the south, and the rockets have been shot as far as Ashkelon. I must say that it was a very unpleasant experience to say the least, and even though I've been here for several years, and lived in Gush Katif, you never get use to the sirens and the explosions. You can only imagine what the adults and children in Sderot have gone through for the last 13 years. They are the true heroes. And the Hesder Yeshiva has been here for these people especially in times like this. Please keep on davening and keep us in your thoughts. All the best Besorot tovot Rabbi Ari Katz Director of Public Relations The Max and Ruth Schwartz Sderot Hesder Institutions
