FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 3, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Catholics were a small percentage of America s population when our nation first declared its independence from England on July 4, 1776. The only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence was a distinguished citizen of Maryland, who did so on August 2 and had perhaps the most to lose by signing, since he was one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. He signed his name as Charles Carroll of Carrollton, as he explained, so that King George would know which Carroll to hunt down for treason. Charles Carroll (1737-1834) was the descendant of a Catholic family that went back to Maryland s earliest days as a colony. By the time he was a schoolboy, Maryland was no longer a land where any religion could be freely practiced, and Catholics faced strong legal discrimination against them. Charles and his cousin John, who would become America s first Catholic bishop, were first educated in a Jesuit school that had to operate in secret. Both were then sent to France for further studies, Charles s training being in law, which he practiced in London and in Paris before returning to Maryland in 1765. When he got back, his father kindly gave him Carrollton Manor, a ten-thousand-acre estate in Frederick County, which Charles was of no mind to refuse. He then married his wife Mary, with whom he had seven children. Entering the political life of the time, Charles became an ardent opponent of what he saw as the gravely unfair taxation system England was then imposing. He also defended his Church in newspaper debates with a prominent denouncer of the Catholic Faith. He and his cousin John served the revolutionary cause by taking part, together with Benjamin Franklin and Samuel Chase, in a delegation that tried to get Canada to support the cause of American independence, a worthy effort that failed. After the revolution succeeded, Carroll became a state senator in Maryland and a U.S. senator. He also became an advocate for ending slavery in his home state, although that cause did not succeed at the time. After Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the same day in 1826, fittingly enough on July 4, Charles Carroll became the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence. Not long before he died on November 14, 1832, Carroll wrote that I have come almost to the threshold of ninety-six years; I have always enjoyed the best of health. I have been blessed with great riches, prosperity, public esteem, and more of the good things than the world usually concedes; but in looking back, the one thing that gives me the greatest satisfaction is that I practiced the duties of my religion. Msgr. David Hubba 3 FOOD DRIVE THANK YOU! Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of my brethren, you did it to me. Matthew 25:34,35,40 Thank you! At this time of the year, when food pantries are low in supplies, your donations were a true blessing to those in need of the food pantries at Ascension Church in New Milford and St, John s in Bergenfield. In addition your monetary donations will help feed those in need at the Housing, Health and Human Services Shelter in Hackensack. We know God will bless you. " give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap." Luke 6:38 ACCOUNTABILITY WITH HEARTFELT THANKS Catholic Charities received $1,006 as a result of your clothing donations from December 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016. These funds combined with monies from other parishes in a similar program throughout the Archdiocese alleviated the sufferings of the needy who sought relief through the many operations of Catholic Charities. In light of this, we are pleased to report that during the same period of December to May, we distributed 81,286 pounds of food to 12,801 families in the Archdiocese. Thank you for being our partner and enabling us to bring Christ s love to the most vulnerable in our society.
