Jones John & Vivian Voiner Deceased Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection: Mark 4:26-34 "This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God. Breakfast with the Bishop College and post college men, come to enjoy Breakfast with the Bishop on Saturday, June 23 at 7:30 am in Synod Hall of St. Paul Cathedral. Breakfast will be served; Father Mike Ackerman will speak on how to discern your vocation; and Bishop Zubik will host a Q & A session. It all leads up to the outpouring of grace upon the Church to occur with the ordination of four men to the diaconate at 10:00 am. No cost. Email tsullivan@diopitt.org to register.

Connelly THANK YOU, SISTER ANNA MARIE On behalf of Holy Sepulcher Parish, I wish to offer our heartfelt thanks to Sister Anna Marie Gaglia, C.S.J. for her eight years of service and dedication as Principal of our Holy Sepulcher Parish School. Sister Anna Marie decided at the end of this current school year to retire as Principal. She will remain on the staff as a part-time consultant approximately one day a week. Over the past eight years, Sister Anna Marie was very instrumental in increasing the school enrollment. Most especially, under Sister s leadership she continued to build on a solid foundation of our strong Catholic identity and faith formation, as well as excellent academic and extracurricular programs. All of us know that Sister has a great love of our children and it is evidenced by her daily commitment to our school. Sister Anna Marie over the past fifty years has faithfully served the Church as a consecrated religious Sister of Saint Joseph, and we owe her much appreciation and gratitude for her commitment to the Church. Father Bob PATZUN The Patzun Mission Committee would like to thank everyone who donated to and / or purchased baked goods at our recent Bake Sale; we made $1,383.00! All money will go directly to our projects in Patzun, Guatemala. There were 4 boxes of left-over items, which we donated to the Middlesex Twp. Meals on Wheels program. Many have been wondering how Patzun was affected by the earthquakes in Guatemala. Phil Miller has been in close contact with our friends there, including other Pittsburgh groups who were in Guatemala at the time of the earthquake. Patzun was outside the area directly affected by the eruption. One of the young women, whom we sponsored as an orphan and nursing student, lives near the eruption and her husband lost family members in the event. One Oakland Catholic graduate was in Guatemala and she and her friends have been ministering to the victims, collecting money and assessing needs. We will be collecting items to take to Guatemala, when our mission group leaves in July. Watch the bulletin for more detailed information. GOOD STEWARDSHIP OF RESOURCES It was difficult in today s reading for Jesus family to understand his mission. In some ways, the situation can parallel relations between parents and young adults today; some parents don t understand what their children must do. If you are a parent with a child exploring a religious vocation, try to be patient and supportive of their discernment process. Many parents want grandchildren, or imagine that their children will be unhappy as priests or religious. Whatever vocation the young person in your life is discerning lay ministry, social sciences, health care, the arts, crafts, communications, trade fields, and so forth, pray that they can be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Church and the world need willing hands and hearts of all ages. Pray for all the vocation of helping and serving. Psalm 139: verses 1-3, 13-14, 23-24 O Lord, you search me and you know me. You yourself know my resting and my rising; you discern my thoughts from afar. You mark when I walk or lie down; you know all my ways through and though. For it was you who formed my inmost being, knit me together in my mother s womb. I thank you who wonderfully made me; how wonderful are your works, which my soul knows well. O search me, God, and know my heart. O test me, and know my thoughts. See that my path is not wicked, and lead me in the way everlasting. Let us keep one another in prayer.
