WORSHIP LEADER: Exactly. [Bottom Line] God gives me good friends! Let s review our memory verse. Two (hold up two fingers) people (touch your shoulders) are better (raise your arms overhead to form a circle) than one (hold up one finger). They can help (pound one fist on top of the other) each other (touch the person next to you on the shoulder) in everything they do (raise your hands overhead and jump up), Ecclesiastes 4:9. (Open your hands like a book.) Do that with me. the shoulder) in everything they do (raise your hands overhead and jump up), Ecclesiastes 4:9. (Open your hands like a book.) (Repeat several times.) WORSHIP LEADER: You are all AMAZING at that verse! Have you shown your parents yet? How about your brother and sister? How about all your good friends? Make sure you show them today! Are you ready to sing another song with me? (Pause.) You are? Let s sing. Lead children in singing Together. Awesome singing, friends. Now, remind me: Who gives you good friends? CHILDREN and WORSHIP LEADER: [Bottom Line] God gives me good friends! Bible Story What You Need: Bible STORYTELLER: (Enter and walk to table.) Hey, friends! It s great to see you today! Let me ask you a question. When you sit down to dinner with your family, do you have a special seat you know, a place where you always sit? (Pause.) Raise your hands if you do! (Pause as kids respond.) At my house, we all have certain places we sit too. I sit here (point out your place at the table) and my (wife/husband/child/parent) sits here, and my (tailor to your own family). Today, I want to talk to you about a special seat at a very special table. Does anyone remember the two friends we ve been talking about this month? (Pause.) I ll give you a big hint. One was named Jonathan and his best friend was named? CHILDREN: David! STORYTELLER: That s right. David and Jonathan were best friends. And who was Jonathan s dad? (Pause.) Jonathan s dad was King Saul. Was King Saul a nice guy or a big meanie? (Pause.) CHILDREN: A big meanie! STORYTELLER: You are right. King Saul wasn t very nice and he didn t like David very much. In fact, David had to leave and run away from King Saul. But before he left, David promised Jonathan that they would always be friends. And David promised that he would help Jonathan s family for the rest of his life. 2011 Orange. All rights reserved. www.whatisorange.org 7
So years and years went by and now there was a new king! Do you want to know who it was? (Pause.) You ll never guess. It was David. Now David was the king! And King David remembered the promise he had made to Jonathan that he would always take care of Jonathan s family. One day, King David told his servant to search everywhere to find someone from Jonathan s family. So that s what the servant did. He looked over here (move to the right side of the stage and look around) and he looked over there (move to the left side of the stage and look around). He searched high and low (move up and down) until he found someone! It was Jonathan s son named Mephibosheth. Wow. That s a crazy name. So let me break it down. Me-phi-bo-sheth. Can you say that with me? (Pause.) Really slow. Ready? CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: Me-phi-bo-sheth. STORYTELLER: Awesome. Now, Mephibosheth s legs didn t work very well. He couldn t walk. Mephibosheth definitely needed some help. King David knew that good friends help each other. So he brought Mephibosheth to the palace. Wouldn t it be REALLY cool to be invited to a palace? (Pause.) That s not all David did! He told Mephibosheth that he could live there. (Walk over the table and stand behind one of the chairs.) He even gave Mephibosheth his very own seat at the king s table. He wanted Mephibosheth to be a part of his family. Wasn t that an awesome thing for King David to do? (Pause.) David knew that God wants friends to help each other. And that s exactly what he did. What a good friend David was! Do you have good friends that help you? (Pause.) Raise your hands and show me if you have a good friend that helps you. (Pause.) That s really awesome. Who gives you good friends? ][Bottom Line] God gives me good friends. Let s say that together. Who give you good friends? CHILDREN AND STORYTELLER: [Bottom Line] God gives me good friends. STORYTELLER: He sure does. He gave David a good friend named Jonathan. And David made a promise to his good friend Jonathan that he would always take care of his family. Even when he became a king, he still kept his promise by giving Mephibosheth a home and a seat at his table. You can be a good friend too. You don t have to be a king with a fancy royal table. You can help and be a good friend right now at school and at home. Let s pray and thank God for our good friends that help us. God, thank You for this story about David and how he helped Mephibosheth. We know that You love it when we help each other. That s what good friends do! We want to be a good friend 2011 Orange.
