St. Philip s Episcopal Church 342 East Wood Street Palatine, Illinois 60067-5357 (847) 358-0615 www.stphilipspalatine.org The Rev. Laura Gottardi-Littell Rector Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Could we have packed any more transitional life events into our parish life in May?! I don t think so. June will be full of exciting life transitions too! On May 3rd, we celebrated the lives of long-time, beloved members Margaret Henning and Edna Brownie Spruance, good friends who passed away within days of each other. We welcomed their children back to St. Philip s, the parish of their childhood. We grieved with the families in their loss, but rejoiced with them in the loving and generative legacies of both Brownie and Margaret. On May 18, we baptized beautiful baby Madison Jo Wilder, granddaughter of Betsy Jicha Knebl. The Jichas are another venerable St. Philip's family. Many years ago, Betsy s mother Glenn Ann Jicha brought the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, our outstanding Sunday school program, to St. Philip s.! 1

On May 22nd, we hosted a joyful Celebration of New Ministry/Installation of a new Rector, with friends and colleagues throughout the diocese and beyond. It was a very special night. We rejoiced with, and are very proud of, our new graduates Jessica and Alison Hill. Alison and Jessica are now reestablishing themselves in Illinois. Alison will be attending Loyola Law School and Jessica is in the throes of a job search in order to begin her career in education. June promises to be full of delightful transitions, celebrations, and meaningful commemorations as well. On June 1st, we will have a tree-planting ceremony in memory of Jeanne L. Swichtenberg, beloved mother of member Jon Swichtenberg. Jeanne attended St. Philip s for many years. Jon, his sister Laura, and brother Randy grew up in the parish. In Jeanne s memory, the Catechesis children and Elevate youth group will help plant two small arbor vitae trees, on either side of our sign that faces both Wood and Schubert streets. They will be assisted by parishioners Bill Burns and Gary Morrill. The Swichtenbergs have made a very generous donation to St. Philip s in Jeanne s honor; to help us hire some of our teen members to staff the nursery, along with our wonderful adult volunteers. On June 8th, the Feast of Pentecost, we will baptize Olivia and Danny Purcell, beloved grandchildren of longstanding, esteemed members Bob and Linda Purcell. It will be a joy and privilege to welcome Danny and Olivia even more fully into the household of God and into our community of faith. 2

Also on June 8th, I am officiating at the wedding of two of our newest members, Ed Kelly and LuAnn Cooper. They are a lovely couple who are already active in our parish life. When you next see them in church, be sure to congratulate them on this happy transition in their lives. Whew! I m a little out of breath recounting all these transitions but it s been wonderful going through them with all of you! Many thanks to all of you who have been part of making these celebrations beautiful, memorable, and possible. A special thanks to Diane Dugovic for her tireless work and good cheer in producing all the bulletins for these events. In Christ s love, Rev. Laura Mission Statement SEEK a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ SHARE the love and compassion of Christ SERVE others with open hearts SHINE with Christ s light, illuminating our world 3

from Sophie Obara A big thank you to all who supported our Annual Spaghetti Dinner on May 2 nd. It was a wonderful evening with great food and lively conversation. A good time was had by all. This event has provided funding to accomplish many exciting things over the years, such as: Remodeling and furnishing the bathroom in the office; Purchasing one dishwasher; Purchasing utensils and small appliances for the kitchen; Helping to carpet the office, stairs and Foote Library; Most recently, purchasing eighty padded folding chairs for the undercroft; Thank you all once again for supporting our events; We have a good time getting together the second Friday of each month in the undercroft at 11:10 a.m. for lunch and we would like to have a lot more women join us for a couple of hours. Come join us for some interesting conversation and some good laughs while we try to solve the world s problems, or at least a few. 8

They did! some years later. Alison Hill earned her B.A. in Criminal Justice and Sociology Jessica Hill earned her M.S. in History and Philosophy of Education 9
