RCIA FOR 2013-2014 BEGINS SEPTEMBER 16TH Adults interested in Catholicism are invited to attend the 2013-2014 Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) at Nativity. We will meet Mondays, 07:30-9:00 PM in the O Hare Center, beginning 16 September 2013. This faith formation series is for adults who have never been baptized, or were baptized in another faith, and are now considering becoming Catholic. We also welcome Catholics who may not have received all the sacraments of initiation, those who ve been away from the faith and who wish to return, and those who just want to brush up on their faith. The classes are led by two specially-trained parishioners, with frequent assistance from St. Patrick seminarians and parish priests. After a few weeks of informal inquiry, we will embark on several months of classes, prayer and discussion in preparation for the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation at the Easter Vigil, Saturday evening, 19 April 2014. We will accept new participants throughout September and October. Please see the brochures in the vestibule for more detailed information. Contact Charlotte Pace at 650/325-6978, Tim Kennedy at 650/321-4818, or Msgr. Otellini at the rectory 650/323-7914. We look forward to welcoming you. In The Community BROWN PAPER BAGS NEEDED! Do you have extra brown paper bags at home and wondering what do with them? The Nativity Conference of St. Vincent de Paul will gladly take them off your hands. As a result of the recent ordinance pertaining to brown paper bags at grocery stores, the St. Vincent de Paul Nativity Conference is now running very low of these bags. We need paper bags to pack food items for families we deliver to in the neighborhoods we serve. You may drop off your extra paper bags at the food pantry located in the basement of the rectory. Thank you. I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. -- 1 Timothy 2:1-2 www.presidentialprayerteam.org A GET-AWAY WEEKEND Do you need a vacation? Give yourself and your spouse time away from the pressures of work and everyday responsibilities. Enjoy a chance to talk and listen to that special someone who loves you! From the Holy See THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS Each month His Holiness asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. For August 2013, the Holy Father s prayer intentions are: General: Parents and Teachers That parents and teachers may help the new generation to grow in upright conscience and life. Missionary: The Church in Africa That the local Church in Africa, faithfully proclaiming the Gospel, may promote peace and justice. ARE YOUR INTENTIONS IN THE BOOK? Our legion of dedicated Eucharistic Adorers begin each hour by praying for (among others) all the intentions entered into our book of prayer requests. Tap into the unimaginable power of focused communal (and global) prayer and let your loving community lift your needs up before our Father. Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall. -- Psalm 55: 22 Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. -- John 16: 24 MEDITATE ON THE WORD We are told: This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night (Joshua 1:8). Read about God s promises, then really think about them. This week s meditation (Psalms 91: 14-16): Because he loves Me, says the Lord, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My name. He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him My salvation. Saints and Observances 06 AUG (Tuesday): THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD This is My Son, Whom I have chosen. Listen to Him. Luke 9: 35 08 AUG (Thursday): SAINT DOMINIC, Founder of the Order of Preachers (1170-1221) Spanish friar devoted to preaching against the Albigensian heresy. In 1206 he founded a community of nuns in Prouille, France, and later, with six followers, founded a community of preaching friars which gained papal approval in 1216 and became known as the Order of Preachers. Popularly known as the Dominicans, the order today has 6500 religious worldwide and is based on Dominic s concept of harmonizing the intellectual life with asceticism and apostolic works. SOLEMNITY, FEAST, MEMORIAL OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OTHER 09 AUG (Friday): SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN), Martyr (1891-1942) Youngest of seven children in a Jewish family, who lost interest and faith in Judaism by age 13. Witnessing the strength of faith of Catholic friends led her to an interest in and conversion to Catholicism. Edith became a Carmelite nun in 1934, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross; she was a profound spiritual writer. When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands, she and her sister Rose, also a convert to Catholicism, were captured and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz where they died in the ovens like so many others. 10 AUG (Saturday) SAINT LAWRENCE, Martyr (d. 258) Lawrence was archdeacon of Rome during the 3rd century. When Pope Saint Sixtus II and 6 deacons were martyred, Lawrence became the ranking Church official in Rome. Before dying, the pope told Lawrence they would be reunited in 4 days. Lawrence used this time to distribute the full wealth of the Church to the poor, so that the Romans could not lay hold of it. He was martyred by being cooked to death on a gridiron.
