SEPTEMBER 18, 2016 PASTOR S COMMENTS. Jesus in the Gospel passage from St. Luke this weekend clearly states that you cannot serve both God and mammon (or money). He is not saying that the earning and the use of money is not something that one of his followers should be engaged in. He is talking not about simple use but rather about one who serves money over God. From the first reading from the Book of Amos we can see that when the lack of concern for the poor or even the sinister cheating of the poor is involved, than God is not present and judgment awaits such a lack of concern. To serve money means to be more concerned about amassing it or getting ones worth from wealth, position and power. Jesus is challenging us to recognize that we must choose between God and money because as he says, when it comes to serving, we will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. It is up to us to make the choice. We extend a warm welcome to Fr. Camillus Njoku from the Diocese of Port Harcourt in Nigeria as he comes to us this weekend to speak about his home Diocese. Fr. Camillus is currently stationed at St. Patrick Parish in Canonsburg as a Parochial Vicar. This weekend I am in North East, PA, in the Erie Diocese, celebrating the wedding of a couple from our parish Kasey Cahill & Mike Maloney. I will be back on Sunday afternoon. Please keep the Priests of the Diocese in your prayers as they gather at Oglebay, WV to talk about the On Mission for the Church Alive effort as well as to celebrate their priesthood in the Diocese with Bishop Zubik. BISHOP ZUBIK CHALLENGES ABORTION AD Bishop Zubik, in responding to a full page ad in the public press this past week, says: An Ad campaign claiming that it s possible for a Catholic to support public funding for abortion in good faith is wrong in every sense of that word. As Pope Francis wrote in his encyclical Amoris Laetitia, So great is the value of a human life, and so inalienable the right to life of an innocent child growing in the mother s womb, that no alleged right to one s own body can justify a decision to terminate that life... which can never be considered the property of another. This ad campaign attempts to mislead the public into believing that a Catholic can support access to abortion in good conscience. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, the Church seeks to respect lives that others might see as disposable and asks Catholics and all people of good will to defend the absolute value of human life. The teaching of the Church on abortion is irrevocably established. It is grounded in the belief that all life, from the first moment of conception to the moment of natural death, is sacred. The most basic principle of human rights is that every human life is an irreplaceable treasure. The unborn baby is as entitled to and dependent upon our care as is an infant. As the debate about abortion continues to divide our county and even seeks to divide our faith, the Church will work tirelessly to defend and respect the lives of the unborn, the elderly, and every person, especially those most in need. AUTOMATIC OFFERTORY PAYMENT A number of parishioners have inquired about setting up a monthly online payment of their Offertory Contribution. Several parishioners already use that option and it can be easily set up through your own bank. If you go to your bank and tell them that you would like to include Our Lady of the Angels Parish in your Online Bill Paying, your bank can set that up so that a check will be sent each month to the Parish with the amount that you would like to donate. This simplifies your contributing in that you will not have to remember to find your envelope and write a check each week and it will be taken care of automatically by your bank and sent directly to the Parish. If you would like further information about this option for giving, please contact your own bank or you can call the Parish Office. SOMETIMES CHANGE IS THRUST UPON US, But how we choose to respond is up to us. This week s bulletin insert for ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! Explains why change is needed in our parishes, schools and ministries, and how we can be part of that change. Be sure to attend one of the two consultation sessions coming up at our parish, and get involved! Learn more at www.onmissionchurchalive.org. PRAYER FOR ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE Father of Mercy, as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive!, endow us with your gifts of collaboration, courage and compassion. Help us to fulfill the mission of Jesus and His Church through vibrant parishes and effective ministries. Raise up selfless, energetic leaders to serve the Church in fidelity and with care. May we, the Church of Pittsburgh in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Lawrence and Washington Counties, be sustained and strengthened by your grace. Help us to learn Jesus, to love Jesus and to live Jesus.Hear this prayer and grant it through Jesus Christ our Lord, with the help of our dear Blessed Mother, under the mantle of her love, Amen.
