Newsletter of the Utah Gun Collectors Association December 2012 EVERYONE WANTS A GUN FOR CHRISTMAS! If Santa forgot to bring the one (or more!) you wanted, you can shop at the Great UGCA show in January! A BB gun can be a good gift for youngsters at an appropriate age, along with some instruction on gun safety. Be careful, though, you could... Other great gifts are UGCA memberships, or NRA memberships. Or, maybe a gift certificate for range time or a concealed weapons permit class. January 12-13, 2013 RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP TODAY! If 2012 appears above your address, then your membership expires on December 31 st. Please renew your membership by mail using the form on page 7, or in person at the January show to continue receiving UGCA member benefits: - FREE admission to the great UGCA show for you, your spouse and minor children - FREE display tables, and reduced price sale tables. - This great newsletter. And special discounts for our activities

2 CHANGES IN THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Nick W. was elected to the UGCA Board of Directors. He replaces Dave T. who is moving to the backwoods wilds of Wyoming. Dave has been a great Board member and active member of the club and frequent displayer over the years. Thanks for your service, Dave! Hope to see you back for our shows, even if you cannot be on the Board. Nick is a serious collector of 1911 type pistols, especially rare variations in top condition. Nick runs his own business, in Bluffdale, and is also pretty skilled in computer stuff and we hope he will help us with our website and our email notifications. Welcome aboard, Nick! Board members serve without any compensation, and spend a lot of time working to make the UGCA the great group that it is. UGCA was founded in 1960, and credit for our success belongs to all the great people who help plan our shows, the many great people who get tables and bring business inventory or their personal collections out for sale or display. And also, to all the fine people who enjoy coming to our high quality shows! NEW MEMBERS W ELCOME! J. David B. Kent C. Dennis J. Ralph L. Daniel M. Nick W. 3 Savage Lever Action Rifles by David R. October 2012 Utah Gun Collectors Show Hope Bisbing Award for Excellence Winner! David R. s impressive Savage Lever Action Rifle display won the prestigious Hope Bisbing Award, shown above. Bruce M. s superb display Smith & Wesson Revolvers 1857-1896 earned first place.

4 A Brief History of the U.S. Army Ambulance Service in WWI by Gus B. was a real crowd pleaser, with his fully working replica of a WW1 Ambulance and lots of information about how they were used. Ruger Old Model Single Action Revolver Convertibles by Gary R. Rugers are a popular collecting specialty, with lots of variations still available at modest prices. This show had an amazing variety of different collecting interests on display, with lots of knowledge shared by members with each other and the public. Just another reason our shows are among the best in the West!

5 ANOTHER GREAT JANUARY SHOW IS ALMOST HERE! Twelve of our last fourteen shows were SOLD OUT, so if you want a table, call for reservations right away! Or, print out an application from http://ugca.org/tablerequest.pdf and mail it in with your payment. UGCA shows are the best in the state, and by far the cheapest for the public to attend, and for dealers to set up at. Admission and table rent are half (or less!) what the competition charges. Living History and the Public! Part of educating the public about the historic, artistic and technical aspect of guns (and gun collectors) is to let them see the important (and usually very positive) role in American history. Our historical costume contest participants are a great bunch of people who put a lot of work into researching the guns and equipment and clothing of a certain historical period or person. Such people are often called Living History participants, and we need to share the fine work of these people with members and the public, not just the judges. We would like our living history participants to consider using a designated area in the show to take turns telling people about their character, clothing and firearms. Perhaps on a rotating schedule throughout the weekend, or maybe just on Sundays. How can we do this? Let s get people excited about history, especially school age kids and their parents. They sure don t learn much history in school any more!

6 The March 2013 Theme will be Utah Guns. Start Planning... We like to throw out a special theme for our March shows, to inspire some new exhibits, and new exhibitors. Our normal generous cash prizes will be given and theme and non-theme displays will be going head to head. Utah Guns is a pretty broad area and entries might surprise people. As long as a display incorporates the theme Utah Guns it will be eligible for special recognition, in addition to our usual great awards! The judges will have (the tough job) to decide how well a display fits the theme of Utah Guns. Here are a few possible ideas, but use your own imagination. How about guns brought to Utah by the Pioneers? Guns used by Utah military units in any war, or maybe overhauled at Ogden Arsenal or Tooele Army Depot?. Guns made in Utah (Browning, North American, LAR, Cobra, Robinson Armament, Green River Rifle Works.) Maybe guns designed by Utahns such as P.O. Ackley, Dick Casull, or the Brownings? Maybe some guns used in Utah competitive shooting, or at the Utah shooting games? There have been some Utah commemoratives. The 1911 pistol is Utah s official state gun... Let s have some gun fun in March with YOUR Utah Guns! Julia B. and Dave G. Flags of Early America and Michael A. s War of 1812 displays.

They meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 9:00 AM in the meeting room upstairs by the gun museum and last about an hour or so. Just show up a few minutes early and follow the others to the room. Hope to see you there!
