From the Pastor Almost every week now there is some new information to share on our proposed Capital Campaign, From Generation to Generation. Here s the latest. As you know, the project for our campaign is the comprehensive renovation of the Benedict Center. It is focused on providing a spiritual, educational and ministerial center for Queen of All Saints Parish for the generations to come. The Benedict Center is one of the jewels of our campus, but it is underused and it is deteriorating at a very costly rate. For many years the Benedict Center was a convent that housed the Benedictine sisters who taught in our school and ministered in our parish. It served its purpose in its day very well, but that day is now gone and we must position this valuable asset for the future. The exterior of the building is still quite beautiful and complements the other buildings on the campus beautifully. It would be foolish to tear it down. The decision to focus on the renovation of the Benedict Center for our campaign was really a no-brainer. It easily emerged from the many discussions and more formal consultations that were conducted over the past two and a half years. A comprehensive renovation of the Benedict Center will have something for everyone in the parish. The consolidation of our Pre-School, the improvement of the facilities for several of our religious education programs, the revitalization of the Chapel, the creation of space for adult faith formation and meetings of parish groups and organizations and the addition of badly needed storage space are among the specific objectives in this comprehensive renovation. Right now, for example, we are trying to pack far too many meetings of parish groups and organizations into an insufficient number of meeting spaces. Often the spaces that are available are inappropriate and even unsuited for their intended uses. We have a Men s Club, for example, that is bursting at the seams when it tries to have its meetings in the Holy Name Room. Some guys have to stand out in the hall. Our Special Religious Education Program for developmentally disabled children, which has very specific spatial needs in order to be effective, has to meet in a room which is at best inappropriate for the achievement of its basic objectives. If the school principal wants to meet with several classrooms, a grade level or one of the divisions of the school, the only space available is the gym and then gym classes have to be moved or cancelled. Our Boy Scout Troop, the largest in the city, has to meet in the cafeteria and organize its business in a space intended for food service. I see this over and over again as I attend the many weekly meetings of the more than 50 groups and organizations that comprise the very active family of Queen of All Saints Parish. I am convinced that the comprehensive renovation of the Benedict Center and the consequential development of some of the space in our Keene and Lemont school buildings should be our Capital Campaign project. I have been convinced of this by listening for the past two and a half years to the people who have served on the parish s formal consultative bodies: Parish Council, School Council and Finance Council, as well as to the leaders of the various parish groups and organizations. Last Sunday we conducted an in-pew survey as part of a feasibility study for our campaign. Before that, more than 50 couples and individuals from the parish were personally interviewed about their thoughts on the possible success of such a campaign and their willingness to help. Soon we will have the results of that feasibility study. I will share them with you as soon as we receive them. I earnestly hope and pray that we will be able to go forward with this campaign: From Generation to Generation. Here s what one parishioner said 60 years ago about the cost of the Basilica that was the project of the parish s first capital campaign in 1955: When I stop to figure how many years I ll be enjoying my fine 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

new church, I have to admit that the cost per year, in the long run, will really just be a trifle. And that s not even figuring the value of all the years that my children and their children will be using the church that I m helping to build for them now. Today we are at a similar point, poised to provide not just suitable spaces for those who come after us, but also a future full of hope for this wonderful parish. What we have received, we have the responsibility to pass on from generation to generation. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard Wedding Banns Camerin Staffel & Karolina Fital Rafal G. Barone Alex Murphy & Sarah Hall SUMMER MISSION APPEAL FOR THE DIOCESE OF BELIZE CITY AND BELMOPAN On the weekend of July 10th, we will be visited by the Most Reverend Christopher Glancy, C.S.V., the Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Belize City and Belmopan. The diocese is located in Central America, and borders Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. There are 13 parishes in Belize, with 130 mission churches in the villages. The Catholic Church also manages 114 elementary schools, 11 high schools, and 3 junior colleges. There are presently 32 priests serving in the diocese. Challenges often seen in Belize include gang violence, unemployment, under-employment, access to education, single parent homes, elderly who are abandoned, and human trafficking. Bishop Glancy will be with us to share a bit about the Roman Catholic Church in Belize, and ask for support. f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time-June 26, 2016 Hospitality at Mass: A Key to Good Stewardship For many people, summer means travel. And summer travel may mean new visitors to our parish for weekend liturgies. How we greet and provide hospitality for our guests says a lot about our practice of good stewardship. Providing hospitality to strangers is a hallmark of Christian stewardship. In the Gospel of Matthew good stewards were commended for their hospitality: I was a stranger and you welcomed me (Matt. 25:35). Saint Benedict directed his followers to receive guests and travelers as if they were Christ. Extending hospitality is especially important when it comes to welcoming visitors who may be attending Mass at our parish for the first time. For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through love. Galatians 5:13 We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to live the good life. But Jesus calls us to a different kind of freedom. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves. Our Weekly Stewardship for June 12, 2016 Actual to Prior Yr YTD Actual to Budget YTD Week $25,252 $1,320,360 Last Year $24,724 $1,321,788 Difference $528 ($1,428) Week $25,252 $1,320,360 Weekly Budget $27,675 $1,356,075 Difference ($2,423) ($35,715) WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY? REASON 31 Sometimes just the pressures of ordinary life drive a person to the brink. Unrelenting demands can make one feel like there s no way out. At times one more phone call, one more text message, one more request can make it all seem overwhelming. We can begin to feel like there s no place to go where we can be with our own thoughts, away from people s unrealistic expectations, at peace. But there is such an oasis of peace. It can be found in the loving mercy and in the unconditional love of God. He made us and we are his own. He prizes us and treats us like the apple of his eye. A mother will forget her children before God will forget us. He will leave the ninety-nine safely in the sheepfold and search out the one who strayed away. He will hoist that lamb upon his shoulders and triumphantly welcome it home. Every Sunday Mass whispers the truth of that message into our hearts. WWW.QASPARISH.ORG Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held on select Mondays at 7:30 PM in the Rectory and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 26, 2016 7
