MOCK TRIAL NEWSLETTER Brought to you by the NCAJ Mock Trial Committee APRIL 2010 "Investing in our future, creating tomorrow's leaders" GRAY STONE DAY TAKES STATE CHAMPIONSHIP State Champions with Judges. Photo courtesy of Scarborough Photography From a field of 70 teams, narrowed down to 10 State Finalists, only 1 could be State Champion. On Saturday, March 20, Gray Stone Day battled it out with Raleigh Charter (Silver) in the final championship round at Campbell University School of Law. Gray Stone Day prevailed and will now prepare the prosecution and defense of a new case for the National High School Mock Trial Championship competition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 6-9, 2010. Many thanks to our distinguished panel members who presided over the final championship round on Saturday, 3/20. Justice Patricia Timmons-Goodson presided and scoring jurors included: David Pishko, Dean Melissa Essary, Janet Ward Black, Representative Rick Glazier and David Rudolf. Campbell Law School was a wonderful venue to hold the State Final Competition and they were gracious hosts. Our special thanks, also, to Rudolf, Widenhouse & Fialko for sponsoring the State Final Competition. A special thanks as well to our volunteers serving as presiding judges and scoring jurors and to those who spent the day with us as site volunteers! North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Photo Courtesy of Scarborough Photography David Lord from Raleigh Charter High School was selected to receive this award based upon the recommendation of his teacher/advisor, Amy Marschall, and based upon David's essay about what he learned from the mock trial experience. David described his mock trial experience as one that "started out as a coincidence" and "became an experience that would change my life and would rewrite my entire identity." He goes on to say: "In short, I gained self-confidence, changed my outlook on the world, and know what it's like to be part of something bigger than myself." David's team, Raleigh Charter, made it to the final round at State Finals. There is no doubt his leadership and commitment played a large part in that success! Congratulations, David! NATIONALS - JUST AROUND THE CORNER Here is your chance to see the best and the brightest high school mock trial students in action as Pennsylvania hosts the 27th annual National Mock Trial Competition in Philadelphia. Volunteers are needed to serve as presiding judges, scoring jurors, bailiffs and more for trials scheduled on Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8. The competition involves nearly 50 championship mock trial teams from across the nation and around the world. Over the two-day period, each of these teams will participate in four rounds of trial competition before scoring panels. Each panel requires a minimum of 5 volunteers: one presiding judge, three scoring evaluators, and a court bailiff. Therefore, more than 500 judges, attorneys, law and justice professionals, and educators are needed to ensure the success of this year's tournament. Signing up to volunteer is easy. Simply follow these steps:

If you have previous mock trial experience and are willing to serve as a judge or scoring evaluator, please complete this Judging Panel Volunteer Form and submit the form online (preferred method) OR print out the attached Judging Panel Volunteer Form and fax or mail it as instructed. If you do not have previous experience judging mock trials, but would like to volunteer to help as a bailiff for one of the trials, a guide for our guests from out of town, or as one of the dozens of other positions that help the competition run smoothly, please complete this Non-Attorney Volunteer Form and submit the form online (preferred method) OR print out the attached Non-Attorney Volunteer Form and fax or mail it as instructed. The NHSMTC is the premiere national law-related academic tournament for high school students. Mock Trial programs give students an inside perspective on the legal system, providing them with an understanding of the mechanism our society chooses to resolve many of its disputes. Mock Trial programs help develop young citizens who can sustain and build our nation by making reasoned and informed commitments to democracy. The Pennsylvania legal community looks forward to providing the national stage in May for this unique educational program. To learn more about the 2010 Championship events, please visit the 2010 National Mock Trial website. Please contact Maria Engles (maria.engles@pabar.org) at the Pennsylvania Bar Association if you have any questions. This is very special event for Pennsylvania, and we hope for a great response from our legal community! Thank you to the following sponsors/contributors to the Mock Trial Program: The Florence L.
