PUSEY HOUSE OXFORD High Mass with Confirmations Pentecost Preacher The Rt Rev d Jonathan Goodall Bishop of Ebbsfleet, Provincial Episcopal Visitor and Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Oxford.

Music of the Mass Mass, Op. 84 Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987) Confirma hoc Deus William Byrd (c. 1540-1623) Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire Leo Sowerby (1895-1968) Choral Introit Confirma hoc Deus, quod operatus Stablish the thing, O God, that thou es in nobis; A templo tuo quod est in hast wrought in us, For thy temple's Jerusalem, tibi offerent Reges sake at Jerusalem: so shall kings bring munera. eluia. presents unto thee. eluia. Words: Ps. 68: 29b 30 [Offertory for Pentecost] Music: William Byrd (c. 1540-1623) Entrance Hymn - Sung by 1. Come down, O love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. 2. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

3. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till Love create a place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling. Words: Bianco da Siena (c.1350-c.1399) Music: Down Ampney, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) THE ORDER OF MASS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. eluia, Christ is risen! He is risen indeed, eluia! Peace be with you And with thy spirit. Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee. Kyrie Eleison - Sung by the Choir Κyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy Christe Eleison Christ, have mercy Kyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy

Gloria in Excelsis - Sung by

Collect for Pentecost GOD, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people, by the sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen. Old Testament Lesson Seven weeks shalt thou number unto thee: begin to number the seven weeks from such time as thou beginnest to put the sickle to the corn. And thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the Lord thy God with a tribute of a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give unto the Lord thy God, according as the Lord thy God hath blessed thee: And thou shalt rejoice before the Lord thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are among you, in the place which the Lord thy God hath chosen to place his name there. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt: and thou shalt observe and do these statutes. Deuteronomy 16 v. 9-12

Gradual Psalm UNTO thee lift I up mine eyes : O thou that dwellest in the heavens. Behold, even as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters *and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress : even so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God,* until he have mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us : for we are utterly despised. Our soul is filled with the scornful reproof of the wealthy : and with the despitefulness of the proud. Psalm 122 New Testament Lesson When the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues, like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them: and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed, and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. Acts 2 v. 1-11 stand to sing The Golden Sequence:

Gospel Acclamation O send forth your spirit and they shall be made : And thou shalt renew the face of the earth. The Gospel The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John: Glory be to thee, O Lord. JESUS said unto his disciples, If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth

me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, (not Iscariot,) Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words; and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. John 14 v. 15-31a This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. Sermon The Rt Rev d Jonathan Goodall Bishop of Ebbsfleet The Liturgy of Confirmation The Candidates for Confirmation gather before the Bishop, who addresses them saying: Dearly beloved in the Lord, the Scripture teacheth us that a special gift of the Holy Spirit is bestowed through laying on of hands with prayer. And forasmuch as this gift cometh from God alone, let us that are here present pray to Almighty God, that he will strengthen

with his Holy Spirit in Confirmation those who in Baptism were made his children. You, then, who are to be confirmed must now declare before this congregation that you are stedfastly purposed, with the help of this gift, to lead your life in the faith of Christ and in obedience to God's will and commandments; and must openly acknowledge yourselves bound to fulfil the Christian duties to which your Baptism hath pledged you. Do ye here renounce the devil and all his works, the vain pomp and glory of the world, with all covetous desires of the same, and the carnal desires of the flesh, so that thou wilt not follow nor be led by them? The Candidates answer: I renounce them all. Addressing the whole Congregation, the Bishop says: Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess together with these candidates the faith of the Church: Do ye believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. Do ye believe and trust in his Son, Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come again to judge the quick and the dead. Do ye believe and trust in the Holy Ghost? I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholick Church; the Communion of Saints; the Forgiveness of sins; the Resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Addressing the Candidates only, the Bishop says: May God, who has given you the desire to keep his holy will and commandments, give you also the strength to walk in the same all the days of your life.

Amen The Bishop sprinkles all Candidates for confirmation and after them the whole Congregation. Meanwhile, the choir sings the following: I saw water flowing from the right side of the Temple, eluia! It brought God s light and His salvation. And the people sang in joyful praise, eluia! O give thanks unto the Lord for he is gracious, because His mercy endureth forever. Words: adapted from Ezekiel 47 and Psalm 118 Music: Plainsong The Bishop says: Our help is in the Name of the Lord; Who hath made heaven and earth. Blessed be the Name of the Lord; Henceforth world without end. Lord, hear our prayer. And let our cry come unto thee. The Bishop extends his hands over those to be confirmed and says: Almighty and ever-living God, who hast vouchsafed to regenerate these thy servants by Water and the Holy Ghost, and hast given unto them forgiveness of all their sins: Strengthen them, we beseech thee, O Lord, with the Holy Ghost the Comforter, and daily increase in them thy manifold gifts of grace; the spirit of wisdom and understanding; the spirit of counsel and inward strength; the spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and fill them, O Lord, with the spirit of thy holy fear, now and for ever. Amen. The Bishop anoints each candidate with the oil of Chrism, and laying his hands on the candidate s head, says: Confirm, O Lord, thy servant, N, with thy Holy Spirit. Amen.

After all the Candidates have been confirmed the bishop says: Defend, O Lord, these thy Servants with thy heavenly grace, that they may continue thine for ever, and daily increase in thy Holy Spirit, more and more, until they come unto thy everlasting kingdom. Amen. The Bishop and the newly-confirmed return to their places. Intercessions The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. Confession The Bishop invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Bishop pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Offertory Sentence - Sung by the Choir Stablish the thing, O God, that thou hast wrought in us : for thy temple s sake at Jerusalem, shall kings bring presents unto thee, eluia.

Offertory Hymn - Sung by 1. Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. 2. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return, and never, nevermore thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.

Prayer over the Gifts 3. Finish then thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee: changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise. Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Blaenwern, William Rowlands (1860-1957) Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Father almighty: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. The Bishop prays a Collect. reply: Amen The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. The Proper Preface follows, which leads into the Sanctus and Benedictus: Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra Gloria tua. Hosanna in Excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini: Hosanna in Excelsis. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer all sing: Amen. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord s Prayer - Sung by As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say: Agnus Dei - Sung by the Choir Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace.

Invitation to Communion Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him that taketh away the sins of the world: blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed. Communion Sentence - Sung by the Choir I will not leave you comfortless : I will come to you yet again, alleluia : and your heart shall be joyful, alleluia, alleluia. Distribution of Communion Please come forward to kneel or stand if you are unable. The Church of England welcomes communicant members of all Churches who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to receive Holy Communion in faith, hope and charity. If you would like to receive a blessing, please fold your arms when approached or carry your order of service with you. If you would like to make enquiries about baptism or confirmation, or preparation to receive communion, please contact one of the clergy. During the Distribution of Communion, the Choir sing a motet Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire. Thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart. Thy blessed unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love. Enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight. Anoint and cheer our soiled face with the abundance of thy grace. Keep far from foes, give peace at home: where thou art guide, no ill can come. Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, of both, to be but One, that through the ages all along, this may be our endless song: Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Words: John Cosin (1594 1672), based on the Veni Creator Spiritus [Sequence for Pentecost] Music: Leo Sowerby (1895-1968)

Communion Hymn 1 The heavenly Word proceeding forth, Yet leaving not the Father s side, And going to his work on earth, Had reached at length life s eventide. 2 By false disciple to be given To foemen for his life athirst, Himself, the living bread from heaven, He gave to his disciples first. 3 In twofold form of sacrament, He gave his flesh, he gave his blood, That man, of soul and body blent, Might wholly feed on mystic food. 4 By birth man's fellow-man was he, His meat while sitting at the board; He died, our ransomer to be, He reigns to be our great reward. 5 O saving Victim, opening wide The gate of heaven to man below; Our foes press hard on every side, Thine aid supply, thy strength bestow. 6 praise and thanks to thee ascend For evermore, blest One in Three; O grant us life that shall not end, In our true native land with thee. Amen. St Thomas Aquinas (1227-1274) Trans: J. M. Neale (1818-1866)

The Bishop prays the Post-Communion Prayer, to which all reply: Amen Almighty God, we thank thee for feeding us with the body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer thee our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of thy Spirit to live and work to thy praise and glory. Amen. Blessing and Dismissal The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. The Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, give you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and strengthen you to proclaim the word and works of God; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. Recessional Hymn - Sung by verses 1 & 3 verses 2 & 4

1. Lo! In the likeness of fire, on them that await His appearing, He Whom the Lord foretold, suddenly, swiftly, descends. 3. Hark! In a hundred tongues Christ s own, His chosen Apostles, Preach to a hundred tribes Christ and His wonderful works. 2. Forth from the Father He comes with his sevenfold mystical dowry, Pouring on human souls infinite riches of God. 4. Kindle our lips with the live bright coal from the hands of the Seraph; Shine in our minds with Thy light; burn in our hearts with Thy love. Regina Caeli Joy to thee, O Queen of heaven, alleluia! He whom thou wast meet to bear, alleluia! As he promised hath arisen, alleluia! Pour for us to God thy prayer, allelulia! v. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia! r. For the Lord is risen indeed, alleluia! Let us pray. O God, who by the resurrection of thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, didst vouchsafe to give joy to the whole world; Grant we beseech thee, that with his Mother, the Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen Organ Voluntary
