From The Pastor s Pen Susan V. Mills A couple of people have asked for more information on the Circle of the Church Year that I have been using during our Time with Young Disciples. I think the Circle of the Church Year is a wonderful visual that helps children (and adults!) understand the Church marks time differently than the rest of the world. We have Three Great Mysteries of the Church that help us tell time during the course of the year. There are two white blocks representing the mysteries of Christmas (the block marked with the star), Easter (the block marked with the cross); and then a red block that represents the mystery of Pentecost (marked with a flame). There are blocks of time leading up to each of these mysteries that help us in the church get ready for the mysteries. The church sets aside these times for us to get ready, because if we are not careful we can walk right though a mystery without ever noticing it! The mystery of Christmas is so great that it takes us four weeks to get ready for it. These four weeks leading up to Christmas are called Advent and they are shown in either blue, the color of waiting and hope, or purple, the color of kings. Easter is an even greater mystery than Christmas, and so we take six weeks to get ready for Easter. These weeks are called Lent and are known as the season of purple, the color of kings. Easter is so great that one Sunday cannot hold it! It keeps on going for six more weeks, and that season is often called Easter Tide and is represented on the church calendar as white blocks of time. This season helps us get ready for the third great mystery called Pentecost. Pentecost is shown as a red block because that is the time when the church was born and the Holy Spirit came with a mighty wind and tongues of fire. All the disciples who were present that day spoke in languages so that everyone could hear the story of God s great love. It was an exciting time in the life of the church! Then there are the great, green, growing Sundays. Part of the great, green, growing Sundays are represented by the season of Epiphany, filling the time between Christmas and Lent. The rest of the great, green growing Sundays fill the time after Pentecost and are called the Sundays after Pentecost. This is the time when school is out and summer days get longer. Families swim, play outside, go camping. Then school starts again, children get new clothes and go back to school and meet new teachers. Then the days get shorter and before we know it, we are back around to the beginning. Once again, it is Advent and we get ready to enter the mystery of Christmas. These colored blocks remind us of the great story of God s love. We just brought the 50-day Easter season to a close with the celebration of Pentecost In the month of June we begin to move into the great, growing season, a time of new beginnings. At Pentecost we were reminded that the Spirit comes in disturbing, powerful ways to open us up to new beginnings. So even though June is the beginning of what is known as Ordinary Time, we should keep in mind that this is the season where we are to be growing. May we open our eyes and hearts and be moved by the Spirit. And how do we do that? By making connections with one another in our church and its ministry, our ministry partners, our community, and the larger church. As you read through this month s newsletter, may you see how we at Community Presbyterian Church are being drawn by the Spirit to make those connections. Look for pictures and articles on our community Read & Feed dinner, the PCUSA Eco-Justice Team making a presentation to the Lummi Nation and the Seattle Corp of Engineers regarding coal transport through the Columbia Gorge (the larger church at work to protect God s beautiful creation), plans for an exciting Vacation Bible School, and note our new web page and Facebook presence that we hope will reach others more attuned to technology (see our web page at: https://www.cpcwaldport.com and our Facebook page can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/cpcwaldport). On page eight there are several opportunities listed for using the gifts the Spirit has given us. Beachcomber Day s Garage Sale Garage Sale & Tacos! Bring in your items for the garage sale that will be held at the church in the Fellowship Hall during Beachcomber Days, June 19-20. The sale will be from 10:00am to 3:00pm both days. Beef and chicken tacos will be sold during the sale. Pass the word to everyone you know. Please...no clothing, books, CD s, DVD s, VHS or electronics. Items for the sale may be brought to the church Tuesday through Friday from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Do you know of any children that would benefit from Vacation Bible School? Would you like to help, in some way, with Vacation Bible School? Community Presbyterian Church of Waldport, with the help of Yachats Community Presbyterian Church, is sponsoring Vacation Bible School August 10 14, 2015. All children between Kindergarten and the 5th Grade are invited to attend our G-Force VBS this summer. There will be lots of music, games, crafts, science projects, stories and snacks every day. Still needed supplies for VBS are natural materials (moss, small pinecones, small sticks and pieces of driftwood, small rocks), travel size toiletries, foil pie tins, gallon size freezer zip-lock bags, oatmeal containers (like Quaker) small or large. Your donations are welcome! Registration will begin May 23 at the Resource Fair during Waldport s Shelter Me Week celebration from 11:00am 2:00pm in the Shelter Me building. You may be asking: What exactly is a Presbyterian Women s Birthday Offering? And where do the funds for the birthday offering go? When Halle Parson Winsborough, Superintendent of the Woman s Auxiliary in the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS), visited Miss Dowd s School for Girls in Kochi, Japan in 1922, she saw a great need. She challenged members of her women s auxiliary to give to the school and suggested each woman give one penny for each year of their lives (or a single dollar if a woman preferred not to reveal her age!). Though this offering was to celebrate the 10 th anniversary of the women s auxiliary, the idea of giving to a specific mission project each year caught on and the offering has continued to be collected each year. Since it s inception, the Birthday Offering has helped to launch nearly 100 major mission projects, which continue to improve the lives of women and children around the world. While the projects and donation amounts have changed, Presbyterian Women s commitment to improving the lives of others has not. We continue to need broad, consistent support from Presbyterian women and others in order to continue funding mission projects like the ones selected for 2015. The actual grant amounts for these worthwhile programs will depend on gifts received in 2015. There have been two specific projects chosen as recipients for the 2015 Offering: PW S BIRTHDAY OFFERING Project No. 1: Bethesda Christian Community Center in Barranquilla, Colombia Sister churches Oxford Presbyterian Church (Oxford, Ohio) and Seventh Presbyterian (Barranquilla, Colombia) want to improve the lives of women and children who live in the neighborhood of El Por Fin, one of the poorest in Barranquilla. Through Bethesda Christian Community Center, these sister churches minister to women and children fleeing the brutality associated with the drug trade, and promote social change in the lives of residents through tutoring programs, Bible study, sports and cultural programs. Your gift to the Birthday Offering in 2015 will help build a new community center to replace the inadequate structure that currently houses Bethesda s programs. This new space will include a new, well-equipped kitchen, storeroom, and dining area that can serve meals to approximately 100 undernourished children. Project No.2: The Community of St. Therese of Lisieux Memphis, Tennessee This nonprofit, two-year residential community, was created to meet the needs of women seeking to learn a new way of life after surviving prostitution, human trafficking and addiction. Its ecumenical, community based project Breaking Free provides support and education for the women it serves. It provides food, clothing and shelter to the women, coordinates various types of medical care for them, and works to help them transition to independence. Your gift will allow the purchase and renovation of the property currently being leased, and will buy equipment for training and vocational skills development. We have an opportunity once a year to join the thousands of Presbyterian Women in sharing God s love through the Birthday Offering. We ask that you give as you are led by the Holy Spirit. Community Life Making a Difference? There are many ways to make a difference in the hearts and lives of others in our community as well as at Community Presbyterian Church: Assist with Read & Feed Dinner (crafts, cooking, cleaning, serving, visiting with guests) Assist with Saturday Community Breakfast once a month or every Saturday morning (cooking, cleaning, serving, visiting with guests) Assist with Vacation Bible School (making decorations, assisting with crafts, games, snacks, storytelling, drama, etc.) Assist with yard work (trimming bushes, weeding, etc.) Assist with building maintenance (changing light bulbs to painting to hammering a few nails) Be a phone buddy for our members and friends who cannot make it to church for worship Bring in canned goods on Communion Sundays and place in the Wishing Well Bring in personal hygiene items for children to create hygiene kits as a mission project Join the Chancel Choir or offer to play an instrument during worship Join those who take a turn working with our children in Children s Church Send encouragement cards to those who are ill or home-bound Serve as Liturgist during Sunday worship To volunteer, call the church office or leave a message on the church phone at 541.563.2168 Children hand out hand made cards, flowers and angel bookmarks to the Women of the church on Mother s Day Triston gives Ms. Esther a flower Baily gives a flower to Ms. Norma Page 8
