October 3 rd, 2017 What a wild month it has been since my last letter. Hurricanes, earthquakes, and evil thriving in some places it seems. I ve heard smatterings of some theological weather forecasters saying it must be approaching the end times. Push pause. Of course we could always be living the last day before the return of Christ but reading the return of Christ through world events is deeply problematic. As bad as some things have been lately, there is still a great amount of good in the world (it just isn t reported much). Also, things have been much worse before. I would point to WW1 as an example of things being about as bad as they have been. I was just reading Jeremiah 39 this morning. I encourage you to read it. Evil existed then, evil exists now. Evil has a leader, Satan (or one of his many other names), and followers. For some reason, that man in Las Vegas decided to become one of Satan s more destructive followers. None of us are promised to be saved from evil all of our lives. Evil affects us all in all kinds of ways. I love how Jeremiah 39 ends, though (CEB) You will escape with your life, because you have trusted in me, declares the Lord. Although Jeremiah was writing this to a very specific audience in a very specific time, the truth in the Scripture pertains to us through our Lord Jesus Christ. Whatever evil throws at the Christian disciple, life eternal prevails! I implore you to pray for all of these tragedies and to constantly give thanks for the blessings God has given us. Of course, if you d like to donate toward them and don t know how, let me know. Life Stewardship The events of the last several months also encourage us to examine our own lives. This weekend I ll be kicking off a series on stewardship of our lives. All of our blessings and our very lives are given to us by God and we are stewards of what God owns. How can we best handle our responsibilities? The plan, and I stress plan because sometimes the Spirit and/or life changes things, for the next few weeks looks like this: October 8 th When Dreams Become Nightmares October 15 th Wisdom and Finance October 22 nd Cultivating Contentment October 29 th Ross Copeland Presiding (Kairos #45 @ Robertson Unit) November 5 th Defined by Generosity November 12 th In the Aftermath of the Great Recession Yes, finance is a component of these topics, but really we ll examine whole life stewardship. As a reminder, Jesus spoke about money/possessions more than anything else so avoiding the topic is actually unbiblical! I believe this series will be transformational and I look forward to exploring with you. It is a privilege being your pastor! Rev. Jim Noble

West District News September, 2017 Road Trippin You may know that I am trying to get around to visit each church campus in the West District, to see each place of worship, to visit with pastors, and to meet staff persons and laity all over the district. So far, I have made it to thirtytwo churches, so I have fewer than ten remaining! I promise, I ll get to you soon. What am I learning as I move about the district? First, it s a big district. I m putting a monthly average of 1,450 work-related miles on my car, including trips to the Rio Texas Conference Center in San Antonio (that s why I got a car with a hybrid engine)! I m learning that West Texans are the friendliest folks I ve ever met. I guess, when you may have to depend on your neighbors, it makes you more neighborly. I m learning something I already knew; that the landscapes of West Texas are breath-taking! I love to see mesas and hills silhouetted against a West Texas sunset. Fields of cotton, milo, and even mesquite have their own unique beauty. I m learning that not all county roads are paved. And that I can t take my eyes off of wind turbines they just mesmerize me. I m learning that where two or three are gathered in Christ s name, he is there with them. I appreciate the faithful witness of our congregations - small, medium and large. I know it s not easy to keep the church doors open and the lights on. It s a challenge to get young people to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and take it to heart. But God doesn t call us to take it easy; God calls us to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. And God doesn t call us to fail. However big our challenges are, our God is bigger! Please keep an eye out for a silver Toyota Rav4 speeding, rolling through your county, and say a prayer for the safety, patience, and wisdom of its driver! Lord, have mercy. Blessings and Peace,

West District News A Christian Greeting "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me." As many of you are aware, my Father passed away last week. He had been at a Dementia Unit since the end of December. Although I am very sad that he is gone, my heart has found peaceful comfort in knowing he is with Jesus! When we would ask "how are you doing Dad?" his response was always the same, with a big smile and twinkle in his eye, "I'm still here, thanks to God!" Dad was strong in his Faith, he had a quote he would say when a family member or friend died, "we are born, to die, to be born again", great words of wisdom. Great comfort indeed! More of Him, Less of Me,
